I am trying to deploy Notepad ++ to multiple PC's. Normally I'd deploy an msi file via GPO or create a startup script, but Notepad ++ only comes as an .exe file and I don't seem to be able get a silent script to run. I just wondered if anyone knew how? Thanks

Thanks @snagrat & @Jawloms - that does sound easy! I've also just thought we have Sophos email protection setup so might need to think about that too, but if we just want to use the extra domain as an alias I presume that shouldn't be an issue.

Hello, Just a query about domains and possibly adding a domain to our 365 tenancy. Our school has 2 domains, one for our school website http://www.###.com & for our AD and 365 tenancy we use ###.lancs.sch.uk I was wondering how easy it would be to add the school website http://www.###.com domain to 365 so our users can use both domains to send and receive - is something like this possible? We have an OVSES agreement so I was thinking of deploying office 2019/2021. How do you find the office 365 package compared with office 2021 for deployment and features?

Thanks for ConTheITGuy & aac - I think I'll look at 2021 as it has MS support until 2026. ESS are a pain with their roadmap, we just upgraded our SIMS server in Feb and they wouldn't accept WS2022, had to be 2019, and had to use SQL 2016 as they wouldn't support 2019 (not even listed on their roadmap). I raised a complaint about the migration work and they told me they now support SQL 2019 a week after we've upgraded our server...

I'm currently looking at upgrading to either office 2019 or 2021, but have the same issue as ESS still do not support 2021. Has it been working okay for you since upgrading, particularly with SIMS & FMS?

Thanks for your reply. I've been looking at various MS articles for intune and there is a lot of info. So far we have enrolled 3 devices into intune via this method: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/join-your-work-device-to-your-work-or-school-network-ef4d6adb-5095-4e51-829e-5457430f3973 We noticed in endpoint manager admin that the device ownership was set to personal so changed this to cooperate. One of the 3 devices changed the login screen to allow us to sign in via 365 accounts but the others haven't. I also set some policies in intune edu to one of our staff groups and these applied when signing in as a user on the one device which allows us to. Am I on the right track? Is there any good guides you can recommend to help with the intune setup? Thanks

We have purchased 4 Surface Go tablets for shared use by our PE staff in changing rooms to take registers (School Synergy - website) so on the face of it quite straight forwards however they will also likely want to use them around school and probably at home, take photos, accessing shared drives, Office 365, etc. Its the first time we have bought tablets and we've also bought Intune licences for management too (to allow us to lock/wipe the device if lost, view device status, maybe deploy apps, etc). We normally add PC's/laptops to the domain which sets alot of policies for windows, allows users to sign in, network drives, printers, etc, but I'm thinking they need to be quick and easy for users to access and the domain is going to make them slower to pick up and use. We have Chromebooks in school and users logon quickly via their school google domain account, regardless of whether they are in school or at home so I'm thinking the tablets need a similar approach and allow the user to sign in via office 365, manage by Intune perhaps. We'd also normally image PC's/laptops via MDT with our custom windows image and I'm not sure if that's recommended for surface tablets or best to leave the OS as it comes. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello, I am looking at adding SQL server onto our MS OVS-ES agreement as we need to upgrade SQL on our SIMS server in the near future. I am a bit unsure of how to add this so we are licenced correctly and my reseller isn't sure either! I think I need to add them as Core licences which seems to be the most flexible option and how we've added Windows Server to our agreement in the past. We have 2 VM host servers each 2 physical CPU's and they have 6 cores each. Our SIMS VM currently has 4 vCPU's assigned. Could anyone let me know how they have added SQL with a similar server setup? Event viewer isn’t always helpful, probably was something profile related by the sounds of it. Glad to help, all the best!

Yes sounds like it might be permissions related or a profile issue. Does event viewer show any errors related? With the other admin account you’ve created you could either use that from now on or delete the local profile of your original account (backup any files you want first), then login and it will re-create the local profile hopefully free of any issues.

Strange, probably not a helpful error as it can’t be storage related. Is that when your logged as an local admin or standard user and manually creating a shortcut? Can you create a different type of shortcut such as to a website? Attach a screenshot might be able to get a better idea of what it could be.

What’s the issue your having exactly? Being in a workgroup it sounds like you might have a different issue to the original post and suggestions.

Ahh i see, If it’s just for one PC open Regedit, go to the reg path and add the same info in.

Your looking in the local group policy editor there which will only apply to the PC your working on. Open the group policy management console on a domain controller and you should get the same options as in my screenshot.

See below - I added to a computer GPO that applies to all our Windows 10 PC's. The full key path is: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer Hope that helps.

Worked great, thanks for that! I was thinking we'd re-image IT suites but upgrade staff PC's to save re-installing individual bits. How are you dealing with windows.old - leave it or clear it via disk cleanup? We have some 120GB SSD's so they may get low on space after the upgrade but probably wouldn't be too much hassle to run disk cleanup. Thanks
