I had a similar problem a few weeks back with some Stone ITX boxes. In the event viewer it talked about enrolment failing which stopped GPOs applying. In the end it turned out to be a network card setting on the PC and in a minute I'll remember which one!

I can't remember too clearly but I think £3 to £4K. I think that was for about 4 or 5 full package licences for teacher laptops then we got 30 cut down versions for students to use. It was in the days of Elearning Credits so people got a lot of software that way.

Dartfish is the one we use here. Not cheap IIRC but the PE lot love it.

Our library has ICT and books etc and is far from dying - it is a very lively place with huge amounts going on. We have an brilliantly pro-active manager who does so much stuff it's untrue. I'd be really sad to see libraries go in schools. I think they have an really important role to play in getting kids reading for pleasure as well as academic study.

I don't remember the bit in the Beatles history where they had to pay off alleged victims of child abuse though!

We have mixed them around in our time and I've only had 1 that didn't work. We use Netgear, 3com and HP switches.

As above if you set up the mailing point you can send to parents of youngest in family or oldest in family - IIRC it's been a feature of SIMS for a while.

I'm not suggesting it never happens - I am just saying that having an internal candidate doesn't automatically mean external ones don't stand a chance.

It can also go the other way though. Bearing in mind that when interviewing you can only go on what people tell you in the interview, I have seen internal candidates really make a hash of it and not fully explain to the interview panel things they have done/skills they have etc. and it has ended up that an external candidate comes over better and gets the job. Sometimes being the internal candidate can perhaps make someone a little complacent.

I'm not sure what point you are making here. As long as any internal candidate is assessed fairly against the person spec. etc. they may make the shortlist above someone else totally legitimately. I've been for interviews where I've beaten internal candidates. So long as the process is fair and above board being internal or external should make no difference.

It's not just music. Controlled assements are part of the new GCSEs in lots of subjects - English, Geography, Business etc.

We are planning to create them an account (possibly based on their exam candidate number). This will be internet disabled (although we may have to look at whitelisting certain sites if they need them). They can save work to the network etc but it will be in the new account's my docs. The accounts will be enabled/disabled when needed (possibly by the teacher concerned). I think our problems are going to be more about all the departments having enough access to ICT for the required length of time without disrupting IT teaching.

As Pottsey says it does vary a great deal. We are all term time + 4 so we work all term + 4 weeks of school hols. The actual amount of paid hols are 4 weeks + bank hols rising to 5 weeks + bank hols with length of service. That means our guys all get paid for term+4+4 weeks hols + bank holiday. Roughly speaking they get paid for 48 or 49 weeks out of 52. In salary terms it does vary a great deal. I see NM jobs between 20k and 28k. Odd ones are paid into the low 30k area. I'm lucky in that my boss sees the value and pays much better than that. Our senior tech earns around £19k and our trainees around £12k. We're allowed to take 5 days of our annual leave in term time but I never have done yet!

We have had the need here e.g. student goes off (holiday/study leave/illness etc) and hasn't copied a piece of design work which needs to be machined overnight by the DT teacher to the right place. DT teacher needs to access it. If he has read access he can just get it sorted. I know they can come to us for it but it makes life easier all round if they can simply copy it them self. There are many other examples along the same lines. Students often go off not having printed work needed for portfoilios etc. I see no need for write access though.

We're using a set of 16 NC10 in Geogrpahy and they are very happy with them. They were in the other day saying how much faster & better they performed than a standard laptop trolley. Battery life seems good to. We are currently ordering another 5 sets of 16 to use across the school as they are so good. FYI we have an HP managed wireless solution as it fitted in with our core switch.

We did a session once where we just trawled Bebo/My Space/ Facebook to see what info we could gather on folks at our school. There was quite a lot of suprise in the room when we detailed how much we now knew about them.

My experience of the CEOP material is that it is fairly non-technical to begin with. I use their stuff having done the ambassador course. In our school I do an event for Year 7 parents and we have also adapted some CEOP materials for use in Citizenship lessons. What I find interesting when I work with the students how in to all the new technologies they are but how little understanding of the dangers they have. The parents evening is mainly a series of short talks/videos by me, police and NSPCC followed by a discussion session. The student one is more directed using the videos and notes that CEOP provide with some adaptations to take into account the amount of time we have to discuss things.

I think the problems arise from the fact that school work is often seen by outsiders as low level IT when in fact that is simply not true. I have often had to describe to people what we deal with. Eg. hundreds of logon/logoffs a day, supporting many applications, coping with users that are sometimes out to wreck the system, dealing with everything from putting a toner in to configuring switches, server etc.(often with little or no training/budget) as they have no concept. Interestingly we have a high up from Lakeland limited as a governor who deals with all their IT and he will happily admit how well he thinks we do with limited resources/budgets etc manging on a shoestring with few staff.
