We use groupcall Groupcall - supplies Communication and data extraction tools to the Education, Public and business sectors. It ties in very well with SIMS. We use it for 1st day contact as well as bulk messages for announcements & closures etc. It sends text, voicemail or email depending on what you have for the parents in SIMS. It seems to work really well and was certainly the one I was most impressed with when we trialled 3 or 4.

I would advise you to carry on an complete your degree. You are young and any number of things could happen in the future to influence you career path/choices. I didn't do a degree when I left school (against the advice of many of my teachers) and although I've done pretty well career wise there are times when it would have been handy to have one. There seem to be more and more jobs these days that ask for a degree as an essential criteria (criterion?) Who knows you may even decide you want to go into teaching when you are older and already having the degree makes that easier. Also have others have said I think (from what I saw of friends and of the young people I work with now) that the whole university experience will give you much more than a qualification.

I'm not a big new year fan. I'll probably be asleep before midnight! To be honest I always feel more like July is the end of a year and September the start of a new one (with lovely August in between - ahh the joys of term time contracts!) - probably means I've worked in education for too many years!

The official one may be the only supported adaptor but there are other ways of doing it. I bought a dlink wireless bridge that works just fine. Plugs in the ethernet port and cost me under £20. @elsiegee40 - the other thing to look at is poweline adaptors which will allow you to have a wired connection (assuming your router has a spare ethernet port) without running cables everywhere.

Nope - I figured all my guys had worked so hard this term that we could all be off for the full 2 weeks. School is only open here until 23rd then it's shutdown til 4th Jan anyway.

I don't believe it would change the issue at all. I'm sure people who drink & drive don't do it because it costs more for soft drinks. As a teetotaller I do however find it scandalous how much soft drinks cost.

As I understand it it is on average an hour per unit but that varies from person to person. Also how many people really understand what a unit it. I was was watching some documentary or other where they tested people on how many units were in x drink etc. and most people were not even close to guessing right.

Well in Kendal it's blue skies and not that cold! Mind you I think we've only shut about 2 days in the 10 years I've been here even when it has snowed/rained/flooded etc.

I think whatever provider you chose someone will always have a horror story. I had Orange for many years (freeserver - wanadoo - orange) and while it was Orange I can't think of a single time I had an issue. Only got rid 'cos I didn't want a landline in the property I was renting. Now I use mobile Orange broadband and that seems pretty reliable too.

We have a SharePoint vle and it has a governors area. Document libraries are set up for the various committes. All governors have access to the governors portal. The Head seems happy enough that all governors can see all areas of the governor portal. One or 2 of them have even emailed to say how much they like the system.

The Twynham school stuff featured in the second link was shown at the LP+ conference and is very, very impressive. If only I could find a way of emplying designers and SharePoint developers here! Hopefully the chap from Twynham is coming to visit us soon to discuss Sharepoint with us - it's amazing who'll come and visit because we're in the Lake District

We generally ask the user to take control or are asked by them. For me it's simply a matter of trust though - I expect my techies to have the highest professional integrity and they don't randomly remotely view screens in the same way they don't randomly trawl people's My Documents folder.

I think it depends on the kids really & what/how they are saying it. I find selective deafness in school is a great thing. Often if you rise to something they do it all the more. If you ignore it they may get bored and stop. If it is getting to you and shows no sign of stopping then I would go to their Head of Year/Pastoral manager and have a word.

Not really answering your question but we don't lock it out. Some features are restricted but on the whole I believe that teaching the use of context menus is vitally important so students have access to it. It's an enourmously useful way to operate most software.

These folks can certainly help with the MS course ICT Focus - Microsoft Centre - Home They do linux stuff as well. I can't recommend them highly enough. All my trainees go through them and all seem to learn a lot and enjoy the experience.
