just finishing off the new mac installs now and i have things working like i want im just a bit at a loss on how to backup users data on the macs the set up is Logon using students login they get a local machine home folder and they get a link to the users windows network share available from the dock should i get the users to copy what they need onto the windows network share or can i automate the process of backing up the data to say the mac server or portable drive the potential of data loss is quite high due to our little darlings being yobs any ideas welcome

wmm 2.6 works fine as a msi install on windows 7 (should be ok on vista also)

yes pupils accounts are non admin its the core services i was mainly worried about like directory admin ect

would using wgm to deny access to utilities and the coreservices folders work?

for printing we have an epson inkjet with a special adapter for prining on cds think its a colour 950 just design you image with the supplied software and print what you need. just get a little minion to change the cds for you

Can anyone help me get my head round locking down macs for student use i do not want the students to be able to run things in core services or utilities we have workgroup manager running have groups for staff and students i don't want to white list everything in wgm i just want to stop them fiddling with the settings How do you guys do it

we currently have a ticket in about the same kind of problem it is something to do with the sims importer that runs every night its broken

that will explain why my system would not allow imovie and a few other programs to run when i used the users home directory to store files

i just run a startup script to install sophos as the console was a bit it hit and miss for installs is simple file sharing enabled on the clients also make sure the time is synced to pdc this cased problems for me in the past

We have been contacted by securus that a problem has been discovered with the latest adobe readerand the securus client if you have a securus box please contact support if your site is showing problems of crashing and hanging when working with pdf files an upgrade to the box is required this will send a new client to the workstations.

the plist trick worked for me

What we do here is sync each machine to our PDC this was done on each machine and they logon every time. just one thing i noticed is one of our machines was set to a different time zone and it refused to log any network users on even though the time was correct.

yea thats a possibility might check out these nast 3com switches we have -
just to jump on this one ie proxy settings are a user setting if i create a new gpo with different proxy settings and add that to where my staff are kept will the gpo overright the default domain policy?

this is the conclusion i was coming up with. on the plus side i have found one security issue i need to sort i just dont like the kids browsing round the network. it just takes one stupid share permission to let hell break loose -

i have all those set as required but when using an app the network icon re appears strange things these macs these macs make good paper weights -

i just cant seem to find a setting in the plists can anyone help -
Does anyone know how to stop macs browsing the entire network i have removed the network icon out of finder and sidebar plists but when i goto say for example photoshop i goto file then open the mac displays an icon named the same as the mac looks like a little computer if i click on that the network icon appears again and i can browse every machine on the network. security is in place but i dont like the fact that they can see everything. can anything be done about this
