Ok, this is probably a dead easy one, but it got me a bit With a fresh, default install of Ubuntu Karmic I get a copy of Grub 1.97~beta4. It has a load of memtest and kernal choices, I don't need em, but nor do I care that they are there. The problem is, that this install unlike other installs of the same version I have done, doesnt have a countdown before using the default. It just sits there forevermore, until you pick one. I've worked out that the old /boot/grub/menu.lst has gone in favour of /etc/default/grub. I don't get that at all. I had the same thing on amazon the other day: Buy an album for £8 (estimate values here, can''t remember precisely because I didn't buy it!!) and wait three to five days for it to be shipped FOC. Or download immediately for.... £12!!? I wondered if they are screwing extra money on the downloads because they assume people who are willing to go for the downloads want it in a hurry....

My open source dans guardian/squid filter blocks it on weighted phrases. Gotta love open-source

If I could get away with it I would pay you to take ours away!! Every set of student laptops we have ever had have been a daily-reccuring nightmare. So my honest advice is - dont get them!! We insist on buying integrated computer desks now - when you can fold away the screen and keyboard and have a decent writing desk when you need it, plus all the benefits of using desktop pcs, you take away a lot of the very limited advantages of student laptops. When you factor in the cost of the trolley, and the inevitable laptop repairs, and the fact that you can get a decent pc for half the price of a comparable laptop, the extra cost of the flashy desks even out nicely. However, if you really must have laptops, I agree with what has already been said by some here - don't skimp on the trolley - you need it robust if you want it to last. Not that it made much difference here when they smashed the screens, tore the keys off the keyboard and threw them at each other, etc...

Yeah, we have noticed an increase in the last few months. We also use exchange, but rather than pay out for ForeFront (which I always want to call Frontline for some reason - like its an xbox game or something!!), we have decided to build a Linux spam filter. I'm in the process of setting it up now. It essentially receives the mail for your domain onto Postfix (a mail transfer software like exchange itself) and filters the spam with spamassassin and mailscanner. Once done, it forwards it over to Exchange for delivery. So much for the theory, but we will see if it actually works by half term hopefully

Sorry, I had assumed from previous posts that Gentoo (which I haven't used) is debian based, and posted apt-get commands accordingly. My mistake - of course since it is not debian based, that would be why apt-get was an unknown command

Oops, looks like you've caught me not reading your post correctly - I read that as you couldn't get apt-get to work for webmin, not that apt-get itself doesn't run. Ive never heard of apt-get being stripped out of a machine, though I'm sure it's possible...

I only know how to get it on in Ubuntu - but if it uses apt-get it should be similar. Edit your Sources list (/etc/apt/sources.list) and add the following line to the bottom of the file: deb http://download.webmin.com/downlaod/repository sarge contrib Then in the terminsal enter the following: cd ~ wget http://www.webmin.com/jcameron-key.asc sudo apt-key add jcameron-key.asc sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install webmin Hope that helps!

Could it be a service thats not running - Windows Firewall/ICS service maybe? Could be worth comparing the services list with a simlar laptop that works...? I freely admit I'm guessing - I've never heard of a problem like this before!!

We use Dansguardian running on Squid (on a Linux install). It has banned phrase lists and a degree of smart filters as well as the usual blacklists, allowing you to ban words like "proxy", "facebook", etc. I've never used Smoothwall or the others, but as a totally open-source alternative, I can't fault it!! Even then though they still find ways through occasionally - the only way we have found to discourage them trying is that we check the logs and ban their accounts from the web entirely for a week if they muck about. 3 times in a row and its detention, for what its worth!

Yeah you're right it does look like you have sign up to their academy stuff to get it. Unless you rip it off I suppose, but thats probably not such a good idea at work!!! It's odd that there doesn't seem to be much call for software like this, its dead useful (if a bit tedious to map an entire network!!)

Hi All, Has anyone here ever bothered modelling and/or load simulating their network? If so what software did you use? I've been set this task and the best software I've found is OPNET - we used it at uni and its not bad. Trouble with it is it's strictly academic - setting the size and content of your IP packets is all well and good, but a modern network simulator really ought to allow you to simulate a wireless network of more than 11Mbps connection speed!!! I set up a Squid & DansGuardian filter with a webmin frontend on Ubuntu lately. If you run the smoothwall Idt program on the clients (not sure if its related to the Smoothwall company) which is a freely available Windows wrapper for the Identd deamon it tracks the username, computer name and you can report on all the sites visited (allowed or denied). It's been dead handy for us to track attempts to get onto illegal sites, and to ban internet access as a punishment. Doesn't track what they are saying on allowed sites however, so not sure if it would help tracking what bullies have said on a site. And it's all freely available

I just added the whole Opera domain to the block list - I don't like Opera (not as much as I despise Firefox (in Windows only) though in fairness!!)

Hi, We've given it up as effectively impossible (without buying software at least - which the powers that be refuse to do!!). Now I'm playing with trying to write a script that detects whether the domain is present and changes the proxy settings accordingly (on at work to filter them, off at home so their home networks run). Getting nowehere on that, which is how things are going for me at the moment!!! Do let me know if you sus it out though, it would be nice to filter them constantly! Paul

Hi, I have built (but not yet tested) a linux server running Postfix, MailScanner and ClamAV to run as a Spam Filter in front of our exchange. Still waiting for the opportune moment to test it, because if it doesnt work I will no doubt be assassinated by angry teachers that suddenly cant see their facebook alerts Might be half term now...
