The only thing I have found recently with WSUS is if the machine image wasn't up to date with various basic updates (and preferably Microsoft Update ActiveX installed) it doesn't want to play ball. Update it manually and it works. One of the ways we deployed SP3 was to create an account with raised priviledges and have it install the EXE on login script and reboot. Used ABTutor to login to save time and having to visit each machine. J.

Scripting Creation of User Accounts, Shares and permissions...
jgcracknell replied to jgcracknell's topic in Windows
Thanks Teejay - thing is shares have always been used e.g. \\server1\username$ since the inception of this network and isn't something I want to change at the moment. Really want to get next Years 7 in without hassle and then experiment on changing things for the following academic year. -

Scripting Creation of User Accounts, Shares and permissions...
jgcracknell posted a topic in Windows
Hi In the past I've run networks which have had all sorts of software from say Viglen which have created accounts and permissions/setup automatically. What I need is a script (or free util) that creates user accounts (say from an Excel spreadsheet) and creates home folders, shares them out and sets everything up with the correct permissions etc. I am using Win 2008 R2 thanks J. -
We use E2BN's Protex setup. Excellent. They are producing a VMWare version too. Filters and allows you to put a student into a security group to block them or put them in walled gardens to change their filtering from secondary to primary level!

Yes - it is doing it on our network and when I log in as local admin it is getting on my "nerves". Any idea how to turn this off for every PC again? -
VGA to CAT5e install questions
jgcracknell replied to jgcracknell's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Hi Darren The problem is the PC is on the teachers desk and the only way to get wiring back is to use the CAT5e cables as the trunking under the floor has no room left in it (stupid planning!). I don't particularly want to run cabling under rubber mats/protectors, which is another solution. It just seems this is the easy way to link the VGA output from the PC to the projector. Alas it will have to be patched in the wiring closet. Hope it makes sense. J. -
No pauses on IE8 here.

VGA to CAT5e install questions
jgcracknell replied to jgcracknell's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Yes, I can invisage the poor HP switch enjoying itself with all that spurious data! -
Hi I use a laptop on my desktop to teach, but the "teachers" machine is some distance away and not facing the class. I'd like to put use a VGA to CAT5e adaptor and link it via the network plate and just patch it in the wiring closet, and then link it via a patch lead to the projector in the suspended ceiling. Are there any problems when going via a wiring closet? Most recommendations seem to look at a single CAT5e run, which isn't possible unless I pay a small fortune for an install. Any equipment recommendations? kind regards and thanks for all your help and advice J.

Advice on Filtering please
jgcracknell replied to jgcracknell's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Hi Untangle looks very good - but it costs for dynamic web blocking. I see comments online about Smoothwall express and Dansguardian running together on the same box with DG doing dynamic filtering and using urlblacklist.com I'd just like to have the dynamic web blocking as well for added protection - or am I asking too much? -
Hi In our LEA we have a selection of filtering levels, but can either be on one or the other (no difference made between staff and students). What I would like to do is be on a more open level of access, but put a box in the way e.g. Dansguardian which filters sites we deem not appropriate to students (but staff can still use) e.g. some YouTube content. Any recommendations - due to lack of budgets/small high school (410 students) I want to do this as cheap and easily as possible. My idea is for AD to be setup to push staff straight to the main cache that we all have to go through, but students via another box to filter. Thanks in advance for your time and advice J.

Hi They both sound excellent. I am not a VB programmer myself and compared with how messy bat files are for just adding printers it really tidies up the whole process of printer delivery. Looking forward to trying them out. Thanks. J.

Hi Does anyone have a VB Script to delete network printers at logoff without having to name each printer? I've got some staff profiles with some dud printers dating back a while. thanks J.

Hi Yes - the quick launch! Arrrrghhh - I've locked the taskbar down as you'd expect and profiles are roaming. So I guess no luck. No idea of a regedit to solve this? J.

Hi I've just got rid of Winsuite (ie Winsick!) and gone with a lovely Vanilla solution. However, the Show Desktop icon in the Taskbar used to be there and it isn't now. Is there a method of restoring this Taskbar icon for users? thanks James
-
Hi Andy I've tried this and also with Excel and Access - on my laptop the just appear in the taskbar and then close again after about 1/2 second - using Win 7 here at home. thanks James

Hi I have 1*Win03 server and 1*Win08 server - the Win03 is currently the DC. Don't ask! I use bginfo to let me know what is going on with respect to this. I have forced an update both on the server and the local machine. There are no local profiles on the C drive which could be causing an issue and I've reset the profile on the server too. Hi I've used the Group Policy Modelling Wizard and Results and get that the policy is applied correctly. If I log on locally I can see My Computer and My Docs, so it is not a local setting. The only change I've made to the desktop locally is to remove the FrontMotion Firefox icon using the registry - but My Docs and My Computer still remain! J.- 12 replies
