toby i suspect it is the hp team. / nics /drivers, the drivers /software is still there after the team is removed btw. are they broadcom ? i'd be tempted to virtualize with esxi and use the local storage for the vm, just to not have to use "real" windows drivers. bit tricky though with loadsa data though.

yes its caching that much because its allowed to, it doesn't mean it needs that much to perform well, but i don't know how many users he has,

what gets me about them though is the machines, they managed to ruin what were ok components. they would take a reasonable mother board and put it in a badly designed case with no airflow (even with the three noisy fans, which would be unnecessary in a properly designed case) which overheats. and requires 5 million screws to be taken out to get the memory or hard disk.

no less daft no! but the SLA's are normally more stringent, and an underwriter after some policy related document tends to not let it go, whereas a teacher after a kids work will just tell them to re-do it in the end.

wouldn't touch them with your barge pole. do your self a favour and rebuild your servers vanilla. most of these systems restrict you or lock you into a specific way of doing something, which inevetiably makes your life harder, while their sales people try to convince your management your an idiot.

have you checked the individual files permissions. I suspect the top level folder they have write permission to, but all restored files don't. right click on the top level folder and edit the permissions and tick "Propagate to all files and subfolders" (not sure on the exact wording, but something like that)

the other option I'm thinking of is dual boot? normal school image on one partition and the music image on the other, with no network enabled at all on the music image, then they can boot back into the school image to copy their work from the local hard disk to server?

i'm thinking of vlaning music as well to cut down on broadcast traffic, so they save to the shared drive? is this the samba box? then copy to fs? their home area? how do they get access to the shared drive and home area at the same time?

how do you deal with users / permissions?

they are more stable, granted but PC's are pretty stable if running pro-tools when using digidesign hardware designed for the software! trouble we have with the PC's for music, Is they want every piece of software under the sun installed and then wonder why cubase isn't 100%/ + we want to connect to the network and listen to all the network broadcasts and hang when the file server is busy etc. then they get macs and make that they are great, probably because their not on the network! and they only have logic installed!

plus could you put up with the smug that will eventually emanate from the mac users?
