are you logged into the vmware site? i don't think you need a specific trial link, just download the software and install it, it becomes "not-trial" when you enter a license key, at least it did with 4.1, havent used 5 yet.

Hi, what's peoples thoughts on SAN / LUN sizing and VM placement nowadays? If you were to setup a school from scratch, using what you have learnt from the last few years, what would you do differently: How you would you setup your SAN? How would you size your LUNs? How would you decide where to place your VM's? Would you dedicate for SQL or Exchange data and log files? etc. Basically i'm reviewing our SAN setup, and i've read a lot recently but i'm very interested in your opinions especially given you run school-style workloads.

RAM is a big concern for me, I'd like to get HA back, its okay the moment but we would have to cut a few VM's if we lost a host. they don't need SIMS do they

any one using server core? have you noticed any performance benefits ? i have a VM on my laptop and it seems lightning fast compared to the last "non-server core" server vm i was running on here, debating switching the DC's and File Servers to server core, now we have 7 desktops RSAT removes the need for the GUI on server to some degree. (not really interested in debating its user friendliness, it doesn't scare me)

Is Active Directory Certificate Services an available role on Server Core 2008 R2 ??? MS Press 70-640 lists it as an available role on page 24. Then on page 30 asks a question which the answer on page 922 says that ADCS is not an available role on server core and you must re-install full server 2008 R2.? i can't find ADCS in the OCList output? I'm thinking it isn't anyone care to confirm thanks.

i know what a cluster is, my vmware runs like that. my comment was directed at using hyper-v. for me in negates one of the biggest benefits of virtualization ---> Not letting windows touch the hardware.

you wouldn't need san space, you don't have to run a vm off a san its not mandatory. run it off the same disks the server is using at the moment.

not really you would be using the vmware/linux style drivers for the hardware which are a world of difference from the windows drivers, then windows drivers for the virtual vmware devices, if the machine still has problems then its a hardware problem either faulty or incorrectly configured,

not with HP drivers and windows ,its quite normal. personally i would virtualize it and vmware handle the hardware. (even if it is only one VM running on it.)

same as what we do with SCCM, we use WMI queries in the task sequence to decide which drivers to install

thats what i was getting, i use sccm so i my wds is "unconfigured" i haven't used wds by itself for a few versions now.

it handles driver injection now? do you mean into the WIM?

a VM on one of my hosts. shares with 10+ other VM's on a DL380G5 have you looked into MDT? should handle driver injection for you.

with very good reason - but dave you make a good point about OP skill set and recommending vanilla, imo primary is the market for this "baby-sitting" network management platforms. i'm not recommending RM as I haven't used a recent version, but thats what I would suggest investigating.

viglen classlink was terrible, by all accounts. edutec software never used it was showed a demo, wasn't really impressed. RM haven't used since I was at primary school, and I hacked it then. aged 7.

found it, long story, running some c# program i wrote against atomwide, sims and ad, to "sync" i was trying to work out why some students weren't getting removed. turns you out you have to set a flag on the AD Search object to get to return more than 1000 results !
