Good morning For personal reasons I need to move to Somerset, but I need a job there before I can do this. My current position is full time network manager & IT Technician for 2 x independent primary schools and 1 x independent secondary school. Experienced in Windows servers , XP, Win 7, OSX, SIMS management, infrastructure management, etc., etc. Please PM me if you know of anything.

It just needs proper gates that close a good while before the train actually arrives, not stupid half-width barriers that come down about ten secconds before the train arrives and that allow cars to dodge around / under them while they're closing. And to echo an earlier post, anyone who doesn't recognise a level crossing whether gated, ungated, automatic or manual is an airheaded moron. Likewise anyone who totally relies on satnav to guide them anywhere and follows it slavishly.
-
If she thought it was a farm gate don't you think she should have questioned why she should be driving into some farmers field? As it was actually a level crossing it would have had a sign saying open both gates and check for trains before proceeding, or words to that effect.

Common sense has been an oxymoron for some time now.

A handy list of staff to blame for the disaster occurring in the first place, cross-referenced by name / area of inexpertise. Another list of who destroyed, or rendered inoperable the backups.

You could be right!

She was just a total moron! All unmanned crossings of this type have very clear signs telling you to open both gates first before driving across. Let alone the fact that railway tracks are visible, even in the dark you'll see them or feel them when you walk over them. Total utter airheaded moron! One wonders what she is/was a student of. Not of a subject that requires independent thought or logic that's for sure!

Hi everyone I've been asked to source headphones (binaural padded full earcan enclosure type) and small mice suitable for ages 5 - 11. Haven't the first idea where to go or what to ask or look out for. Any advice please?

Who amongst us is using virtualization to deliver complete, centrally managed desktops to the user via something like VMWare View? Anyone? It seems as though it should be a good idea but I can't quite put my finger on why. If anyone is using it would they say why they took the decision, how easy or otherwise it was to implement, any downsides?

Thanks everyone. Enquiries are now in hand.

Morning again! We're thinking of changing supplier. Our current one has let us down on a few important things Can the panel recommend a supplier, preferably with an office local to Worcester, who can supply and support about 200 Dell desktops + 30 laptops + all sorts of other IT stuff (everything from memory sticks to workgroup lasers)? We'll be ordering similar quantities annually to meet our rolling 4-year PC replacement program. We're not just looking for a box shifter, the company has to be able to offer good and responsive customer and tech support. We'll be ordering all this stuff in June probably and need to sort out a supplier now. Any recommendations?

I just saw this thread, due to it's reawakening. At first sight I thought the OP was asking for some sort of Star Wars personal sidearm!

Morning all! Another week begins! One of our teachers, despite constant reminders to the contrary kept all her important data on a USB stick. The inevitable has happened and she has now broken the stick, she dropped the laptop and bent the stick. Strangely enough she says it no longer works! She has no other copy of this data  I've said I'll have a go at repairing said stick. Does anyone know of a good set of instructions to do this? I've never dismantled a USB memory stick, I know (I think) that there are four pins connecting the PC to the chip? Anyone ever attempted this? Did it work? Tips?

This goes back a couple of years, maybe three, when Symantec AV seemed to "reset" random ntuser.dat files to 256Kb, see here for example: Roaming Profiles and Ntuser.dat corruption
-
Well it's still working on the machine I alluded to in my last post so when I'm next on site there I'll try the same procedure on all machines. Be nice to know what caused it though. And I've not heard a peep from Sophos support!
-
This is the old "Symantec" problem isn't it? Anyway, that is simply corrupted ntuser.dat files. Do you have a backed up copy of a known good ntuser hive that you can restore to a "faulty" user to test this theory? I still say "say no to roaming profiles", never had a good experience with them, nor have my colleagues here.

Well, I've not been able to devote much time to this today but earlier (just before lunchtime) I reinstalled Sophos on a client machine again. I've just remoted back into the machine and Sophos is running and updating OK. Now what I did on this PC was to run the uninstall script kindly posted on here earlier followed by a reinstall of Sophos - that didn't work, same as before. In fact it was worse in that Sophos was now completely disabled on the machine in question! So in a fit of annoyance I simply manually ran the install again from the server, not via the console, it installed OK and is still running three hours later. So when I get a chance I'll pick another error'd machine and do the same thing, see what happens there. Re: Dickens' post, I did double check but File and Printer sharing is enabled already. Thanks to everyone who's posted on here so far!

If you have the time and patience then this will give you some insight into RP registry structures. User Profile Structure
-
So am I - but one day the roaming profiles "mysteriously" vanished, to be replaced with folder redirection. Hardly anyone even noticed! Apart from the vastly improved logon times
-
Never heard of having to recreate a roaming profiles database before. Do you actually need roaming profiles? Ours caused all sorts of trouble, including long login and logoff times because users were storing huge files on their desktops, etc. We got rid of them all and simply use folder redirection now - no further problems! Anyway, do you have a backup copy of your users profiles? If so it should be relatively simple (if time consuming) to recreate the profiles, making sure that you remove all cached data from the workstations. But, as you say, why are they all going bad on you in the first place? There must be a file, or files that are being passed around that are causing this.

OK, it's been agreed what to do. Thanks for your helpful opinions, appreciated.
-
This what I did but it's too difficult and time consuming for the supply teacher apparently!
-
Yes, yes.... I have done all this....
