Following on from my previous thread. I've installed a Ubuntu server running Dansguardian and squid. I can't for the life of me work out how to authenticate AD users onto squid in order that I can set up different classes of filtering for different users. If there's anyone on here that knows this system and is available for a bit of consultancy / training work here in Worcester please PM me.

What configurable proxy / filter to use?
Number6 replied to Number6's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I'm not ruling out any particular route as yet but I have installed Dansguardian and Squid on Ubuntu server and got it working. However, I'm yet to be convinced as to how simple a job it will be to properly configure and maintain the system, I've yet to work out how to set up user groups so that I can configure different filtering rules for different categories of user. I also need to properly sort out how the system uses the blacklists, banned phrase lists, etc; most of the literature on the web seems very obtuse. Does anyone know of a reference to a good setup guide for Dansguardian and Squid, or alternatively would anyone who is conversant with the system let me tap their brain? -
Thanks everyone, it was this one.

This is my thinking. Ubuntu methinks - do I need workstation or server? -
I'll try that one, thanks.

Tried all the paste options with no success.

Rough cost for smoothwall? 70 users, just proxy & content filter. -
Hi One school that I manage is using OpenDNS for web content filtering which is fine but the school now wants to be able to give teachers a lower level of filtering than pupils which is an understandable request. So, what, if anything can I put in place? I was thinking of maybe Squid / Dansguardian running on Ubuntu, will this give us the ability to set different filtering levels for different classes of user? If not what would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

One of our bursary staff has a weird problem that I've not seen before. She is using a spreadsheet with a simple summation formula in one cell, it's just adding up cells to the left. If she copies and pastes the cell content to another cell, or if she fills a range of cells then the new cells display the result of the cell copied from instead of what it should be. The summation ranges in the cells copied to are correct and if the formula is manually typed into a new cell it's fine. Anyone seen this before?

I think it's resolved. I uninstalled the soundcard in CP and rebooted. It wanted a reinstall obviously so I instructed it to search for the best driver. It found an updated driver, installed it and lo and behold I have sound mixer back in Device manager. Result!
-
I've set "display disabled devices" and "display disconnected devices" and there's nothing showing. The only options are Microphone and Line In. Manufacturer specific drivers are being used and are up to date.
-
There's no option to change it from the CP.

Anyone else have this issue? The input selction dropdown box is greyed out and also there is no selection available from the preferences menu. ISTR that there is an issue with many sound cards being crippled to deny recording to other devices but I haven't looked into this before. Anyone have any ideas how to get around it? I assume it must be a registry setting?

It did. The PC also found updates. But... it didn't download or install them until I said it could which is not what the GP says, but that's a different problem. So.... do I need to do this on all the affected machines now?

No such file in W7

The thing is in our case that WSUS and it's clients all appear to be talking to each other OK. The clients are just not seeing the updates.
-
Here's what WSUS says of the same PC that the log file is from. You can see that 23 updates are needed but the PC itself reports that it's up to date. WSUS also reports the last status update from this PC was today so it is communicating.
-
From the log above this line seems specific: Seems to indicate that coms are working but that no updates were detected? But the WSUS server reports back that the same PC needs updates.
-
Sorry for the delay, doing 101 other things. All PCs appear to be out of date from the point of view of the WSUS console on the server, but at the PC it thinks it's up to date. Here's the latest few lines from the windowsupdate log for today on one of the W7 machines:
-
Good morning all. Mainly Windows 7 PCs + a few XP, WSUS is running on SBS2003. When I check on the CP all our PCs are reporting as up to date and no updates available yet if I click the "check online for updates from Microsoft Update" then there are 30+ important updates found. WSUS itself reports that all our PCs need updates. WSUS is synchronizing, downloading and auto-approving updates. There are no apparent errors reported anywhere, it's just that the PCs think they're up to date but they're not. I've checked that all appropriate services are running on the clients and there are no firewall issues. What can I check next to troubleshoot this?

If it were me I would. I get much more than your hourly rate and it's full time including school hols (this is both a plus and a minus point on occasions though).

I'm actually quite shocked at some of the charging levels on here. Less than £10 an hour? I feel suddenly quite well off.
