It cannot and must not become normalised. Passwords currently account for the majority of auth on the internet - ok, some systems allow 2fac these days but few kids use that - even if we did think it's "ok" for facebook, it sets a terrible precedent for banking etc. There is no way we as IT professionals can accept this - normally i'm all for putting the user and their foibles at #1, but this is a step too far.

Try turning off authentication for those sites - it feels to me this could be NTLM related - of course I don't have that much experience with sonicwalls

What authentication are you using on the sonicwall?

ipad: there's a browser app which redirects web traffic for external use. Internally - transparent proxy ok, you need to whitelist itunes and some youtube urls android: transparent proxy generally ok - no known issues kindle: argh, this is not a web device, needs to go directly thru firewall atm redirecting nonstandard ports would be pretty tough - thankfully it does not seem to be needed. Failures would be logged on firewall.

Imagine you might be able to use such a thing as a transparent proxy so you could upstream to LA. Wouldn't bother mysefl, probably less hassle to set up squid

Nmap is almost certainly the place to start with this, given the cost, and the efficacy. W-o-L whould be easy enough to add, and makes a fun demo...

Not sure signing an AUP could be particularly binding for kids - maybe better have their parents sign it. I wonder if we have a whitepaper on this. I'll poke the relevant folks and find out. It is a good way to focus peoples' minds on behaviour online though.

Thanks guys, all the Smoothwall information presented here is correct as far as I see it We are working to integrate even more closely with various wireless providers, and to offer more options for login - but certainly right now the login page can be presented to wireless users so their accesses are logged against AD username.

Pascal and VB6 are probably a bit long in the tooth - the others are more usefully CVable. Not that I am averse to using an less fashionable language if it is a good teaching language, but IMO neither of these are "better" there than Python. TBH, I find the VB IDE too "helpful" to be able to teach anything, it does too much of the underlying nuts and bolts. OTOH, it's easy to make a GUI and draw stuff - though that implies significantly more programmer skill. Java has many advantages, but a rather steep learning curve and can be hard to get off the ground. Python would be my choice as it is clean, free (students can easily get it for a range of devices regardless of what they have at home), and actually fairly well used outside academia.

Sadly these are only Diageo whiskies - so if you don't see your favourite on there, that's probably it. Still, as @sonofsanta alludes to, you can find plenty of variety in there. Have tried ~20 of those and 4 of the 8 on my shelf are there My favourite is Cragganmore, at least for the moment...
