Much as I love Perl, it is not a great teaching language, as the syntax is too wooly. Python, possibly. VB discourages thinking and being able to build "something from nothing". PHP... again, a bit wooly. Other than the "indenty oddness" of Python... i'd go for it every time.

Personally I would avoid paying for "the answers to questions". Most of the time, if you can't find the answer to your question, you're asking the wrong question. Folks on here are usually good at pointing that out. Likewise I second the recommendation for serverfault. As others have said - get someone in (a fellow Edugeeker perhaps, payment in beer/biscuits/lunch etc) to show you the ropes on stuff you're really undfamiliar with - that can also lead to "knowing what questions to ask". If you are going to pay, at least make it for a (half?)day's consultancy, on a specific topic, preferably from someone you know knows, IYSWIM. We have the occasional smoothwall customer ring and ask for such a thing when they arrive at a new school, and we can usually oblige.

Also, it should be noted that it is possible to only do this for some groups (or locations) in smoothie, thus avoiding the "staff cant get full access" issue.

No - the idea is you get a personalised portal, so staff can add videos they think are suitable. That's the key part here - youtube need to be able to identify a group of users. The http header is the best way, as URL mangling is a bit hit & miss.

Find myself nodding at post by @m25man! We do a similar thing, our 3 Zultys systems (Leeds, Charlotte, Soton) all connect to the wider world via PSTN - fractional ISDN30, plus some regular phone lines as backup/overflow. All internal calls are over VPN, where the VPN connection is generally a dedicated ADSL except here in Leeds where everything goes over our 100Meg microwave link from metronet. Yes, VoIP... over wireless. Its fine. Bear in mind G711 is ~64kbit/sec/call. It's nowt for today's decent LAN, especially if your switches are making sure the little packets move quickly!

Depends how you're doing it. By URL, you will see an error if you go to youtube.com. That Error will link to /education By Header, you will be redirected to /education automatically

There's a lot of horror stories out there on VoIP. We started with ours on a flat LAN with managed switches, but no VLAN, setting the phones to prioritise their RTSP traffic using DSCP set to "EF". You may need to tell your switches to honour this, but I doubt it. We never had a moments bother out of it. We currently route all internal calls over IP, including those to our charlotte NC office. This is over a VPN, on some links which are very much non-traffic controlled. It works fine. I imagine we might run into trouble if one of the choke points became very congested. I have a sneaky feeling many VoIP horror stories are from vendors wanting to sell expensive kit

It must be a sign of slipping standards that I'm not at all shocked by this... I would consider the words in that test to be "harder" to spell (in that some have vaguely tricky to remember double letter sequences) than some of the trivially easy to spell words which people seem to trip up over all the time.

youtube have recently changed some stuff - i don't think this has broken comment removal though. Should be in G2 and G3, though its about 10000 times less CPU intensive in G3 We have some new youtube functionality being added I hope to debut at BETT... of course it will be rolled out to all users with up-to-date licences as per usual - do remember, your licence renewals cover ALL updates including biggies like G3, so when you have a bit of time to upgrade, just ask to be sent the s/w if you haven't already done so.

TBH, a breach as serious as this - as WAS communicated, hashed passwords may have been compromised - you can safely assume that nothing is sacrosanct. There is no way for the admins to say for sure anything that could have been accessed was actually copied though. Presume ANYTHING you ever sent to the site may have been read. IMO the big password change is a sign that the admins are committed to security - this has obviously cost a lot of work, and has probably cost some members. A less scrupulous bunch might have pushed this under the rug.
