Sorry to bring up an old thread. I have applied this solution but when loading the program using this method no one (students or admins) can see network drives when going to load or save in Dance EJay. When run directly as an Admin network drives do appear in Dance EJay. Just not when using this method. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Please do not be offended by this, but I have now posted several things and questions on here and you have replied with very negative and unhelpful comments. I know this - I even explained in my post it would appear stretched by doing this, but its what the users want! All I was looking for was a possible way around this and not a mass debate on why I would want to be doing it. Truth is I don't - but sometimes its not about what you want, but about what other people want! And thanks to all those who have replied with possible solutions. I will try these and see what happens.

I have noticed some machines with smaller hard drives are becoming totally full due to some kind of automatic caching or offline files. I am pretty sure I have configured the offline files settings to disabled, but do have a separate GPO configured to enable offline files on the computer level in the GPO for some staff laptops. But these machines are in a different OU to that GPO so should not have offline files enabled. I have two machines here, one has a 20GB in the C:\windows\csc folder and the other has 8GB in the C:\windows\csc folder. The staff do have pretty big personal drives and quite a few staff have logged onto the machines. The machines only have 40GB hard drives, and I thought windows only used up to 25% of the total hard drive size for caching/offline files so this is not making much sense. Like I say, I am pretty sure Offline Files is disabled so I am guessing it is a hidden setting somewhere which is causing this to happen. If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful.

I have some laptops at a school which have stickers with Windows 7 Pro license keys on them. I have rebuilt these using WDS and a Win 7 Pro retail image. During the build I have then entered the key from each laptop manually, which the laptops have accepted and said the windows is now activated. However a few days later users are now logging in and windows is saying the key is not genuine and windows is not activated. I entered the OEM key from the laptop again, and again it was accepted saying the key was OK and windows was activated. A few days later it is having the same problem yet again. I have only activated machines using a volume license key in the past and VAMT2, but deiced to use the Win 7 Pro key from the sticker on these laptops. Does anyone know what might be wrong please?

I expect this is normal behavior, but I have some laptops which are now Windows 7. When a projector is plugged in the screens are being compressed to a 4:3 screen with black borders at the side, rather than staying 16:9 and stretched. I know unplugging the projectors returns the laptops to a true 16:9 size, but is there any way of making the laptops appear stretched as 16:9 when the projectors are plugged in, like they did with Windows XP on them?

Internet Going Down / Rebooting Server Fixing
CommodoreS replied to CommodoreS's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
This server is also doing DNS and DHCP and everything else. I don't believe it is going down. Centrastage is installed and not detecting the internet going down. this would also not explain why some websites work while others do not. -
I have installed a Windows 2008 R2 network at a school with LGFL2 (sharing the link with the infant school) but something very odd is happening. The school tells me that every few days when they come in, in the mornings that the internet is not working for some websites (like google) but it is working for others. Apparently rebooting the Windows 2008 R2 server fixes the problem, which does not make much sense as the internet goes directly to the router of course. I have checked the event viewer log files but cannot find any pattern of anything going wrong when it goes down. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas as to what might be going on. Not come across anything like this before.

I know its not really IT, but I have got an old Elite Vision DL OHP and both the bulbs have blown and would like to replace them. I have attached a picture. Does anyone know what type of bulbs this uses and where to buy them? Also how easy they are to swap as they look like they might be hard wired/soldered. Any help is appreciated.

Best solution I found was to add a Logoff Script to the GPO for the users. Save this as anything.vbs and then add it to: User Config>Policies>Windows Settings>Scripts>Logoff When users logoff it deletes the desktop.ini file solving this problem. On Error Resume Next Set WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") DocsPath = WSHShell.SpecialFolders("MyDocuments") If FSO.FileExists (DocsPath & "\desktop.ini") Then FSO.DeleteFile (DocsPath & "\desktop.ini") End If

Using a Windows 2008 R2 server I would like to allow users to be able to Install Software locally on their computers, by using a GPO Policy. I have tried creating a GPO called "Local Admin Rights" and linking this to the OU which contains the machines. The settings are: Computer Config>Policies>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Restricted Groups Group Name: Domain\Local Admin Rights (Domain is actual domain name) This group is a member of: Administrators (I added builtin\administrators but when you go back into the GPO it only shows Administrators and the builtin\ part is missing) I have also added the Group "Local Admin Rights" to the users but this is not working. Users still cannot install software locally. I am wondering if there may be another setting somewhere that I am missing?

Zyxel NWA3160-N hybrid wireless solution advice needed
CommodoreS replied to CommodoreS's topic in Wireless Networks
Do you have a long answer which explains in more detail why you have said No. -
We have been quoted to have a Zyxel NWA3160-N hybird wireless system installed at the school. The quote has come in much cheaper than the other systems we have been quoted for such as the Ruckus Solution. I just wondered if anyone has tried using these and their thoughts. I found a review at ZyXEL NWA-3160 Wireless Access Point review | Wireless routers | Enterprise | Reviews | PC Pro which shows performance might be poor.

I am unsure what other actions have been taken as it is now in the hands of the ict leader. What I do know is that all other schools in the cluster have been contacted to check their service agreements. It would appear that most agreements are very similar and I wonder if they are all copying each other.
-
Just to follow up after seeking further advice I believe the school has decided to use the VLE for another year.

Win XP Offline Use (Domain/Local Log On)
CommodoreS replied to CommodoreS's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Looking on the other network nothing in the groups seem to have any cached logon settings enabled. The thing is on the other network the users have not had local accounts on those machines created. They are using the cached network account, but can only log on locally. If they are disconnected from the network and choose the network domain name it will not allow them to log on. However if they change this to the local machine name it will let them log on. Where on my test network the complete opposite is happening. Users can only log on when the domain is selected and get an error message. The users on both systems have no profile path configured. -
On my test network I have configured offline files. However even when the machine is disconnected from the network I can only log on with users on to the Domain Name. When Log On To: is changed to the local (This Computer) setting the user is not able to log on locally. Where on another network I did not configure for some reason once a user has logged on to the machine on the network, they can then change Log On To: to the local (This Computer) setting and the machine lets them log on. This is a hard problem to describe to I hope the above makes sense. I just can't figure out why the other network is allowing users to log on to the Win XP machines locally and it will not let me do this on my test network. The problem is (as I mentioned in another post) on my test network, when you are disconnected but have the domain selected the error is displayed: ""Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you logoff. You may receive this error message because of network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator." However on the other system where is allows users to log on locally this message is not displayed. If they are disconnected from the network and have the domain name selected it will not allow them to log on at all. I am guessing this is due to a rogue AD setting somewhere I have missed. Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks for the info. The only requirement is to inform the school at least 30 days before the subscription is due to renew to tell them how much it will cost for the next year. There is no requirement for them to contact the school 60 or more days beforehand to inform them the subscription is expiring and find out if they do not want to renew the subscription, so the school has to remember this 9 to 10 months after use and 2 months before the subscription expires. There is also a section which says they will suspend or end the service after non payment, but a section before that which states they will charge interest on late and overdue payments.

I will try and see what's been signed, but surely the T&Cs must have some standing, otherwise the company would not have gone through all the effort to write them and enforce them so strictly.
-
Just found it: Gradwell Blog » Blog Archive » Ofcom bans automatic contract renewals Looks like it is only for Offcom though for broadband and fixed line services, rather than a UK Law for all products and services.
-
Any specific details of that Law would be appreciated, as I can't find it, although there is no contract involved. Just an agreement and a subscription. I did find this: Automatic renewal I signed a 12 month contract (for a listing/ad - JustAnswer Which is a similar sounding problem, and does not help my situation. Just to add to this there is also an item which states if they revise the agreement and you continue to use the service when the new agreement comes into force, this means you have accepted the new agreement. To confirm, this is for a major VLE used by many. I can understand a company wanting to keep its customers, but this seems a tad extreme.
-
I have a school who seem to be locked into subscribing to a VLE for another year that they do not want to. They were sent an E-Mail reminding them their subscription would expire on 31/3/12, 52 days before it would expire. Nothing was mentioned about having to contact them if they no longer wished to subscribe for another year before this. Because of this they thought if they did not renew the subscription when it expired, the service would terminate. However in the small T&Cs of the agreement which was referred to on the original order/subscription, it mentions the agreement can only be terminated by giving 60 days written notice prior to the anniversary date, so it seems the agreement never ends and the subscription has to be renewed. I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar situation and other peoples views and thought on this.

Allowing non-administrators start a service by a batch command
CommodoreS replied to Davit2005's topic in Windows 7
Runas Password might also be an option. -
Out of interest, how comes all users got access to another users offline files? I though users can only access their own personal files through offline files?
-
I guess they must have changed something recently, as The download E-Mail says: Thank you for your interest in . Below you will find links to download as well as links for any bundled products, supporting documentation, and technical support. [sECTION_HEADING] Technical Support Click here for product support.
