Thanks for that. Tried it and it works well and does what I was looking for, so it has also been purchased.

I am sure this has been asked many times before, but apart from the RM finance system which I already know about, please can anyone recommend any SIMS\FMS alternatives which they use and recommend and have lower yearly support costs.

RM CC4 Drive Mapping not showing for Staff
CommodoreS replied to CommodoreS's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Thank you. The letters were configured as hidden. I guess that is an RM default setting. -
Please could anyone recommend any good free network monitoring usage tools? There seem to be quite a few which monitor the network and tell you of problems. I am just after something which reports when a machine has been switched on\off and when a user has logged in and off, perhaps also reporting a username to get an idea of how much the system is being used and who is using it the most. Can anyone recommend any free (or extremely cheap) tools that would do this please?

I have attached a external hard drive to the server and am setting up a shared folder for Staff and Admins. I have copied permissions from the RMStaff shared folder, and configured the drive in the RM Management Console Locations>Main Site>Drive Mappings When an administrator logs on they see the mapped drive letter in Windows Explorer. When a staff user logs on the mapped drive is not showing, but is accessible by typing \\servername\sharename in explorer. I can not understand why Staff are not seeing the new mapped drive, but administrators are. Staff can only see C: N: T: and W: I tried mapping the drive as S: and when this did not work I tried O: I can only imagine there is another rogue setting somewhere in the RM system which is preventing the mapped drive from being created. The event viewing is giving no errors, so it is like it is not trying to create the mapped drive at all for staff. I can also confirm the machine are not blocking propagation of settings to their location, confirmed by the fact administrators can see the new mapped drive on the same machines. Does anyone have any ideas about what might be causing this problem please?

Thank you for taking time to reply and for the suggestion. The problem I now have, it is a standalone PC and IE11 does not support local proxy.pac files. I guess I could get around it by installing a different web browser which does support local proxy.pac files.

I have a standalone Windows 8.1 PC that is being used as a visitor\reception area PC for Parents to use and would like to lock it down so it can only access three websites and no other websites. I have tried to set this up using Microsoft Family Safety, but having to use the school proxy server to access the internet this is bypassing the Family Safety settings and allowing access to all websites. Please can anyone recommend any other software or ideas which would allow me to do this, and work with the schools Proxy Sever setting.

Perhaps a bit premature on this, I have done some digging. Apparently licences can be released using a Manual Release button on the Smart Licence Portal and attaching an XML file for that install. I am now trying to find out how you export the XML file and if they can be stored or if they expire. Idea being to keep a copy of the XML file for each machine if it fails then to use that to reclaim the licence. I am guessing that would also be quicker than logging on each machine and deactivating when it comes to windows 10 rebuilds. I am guessing including Smart Notebook 15 as part of an image is somehow against the smart licensing agreement in their T&Cs. However I use Deployment Workbench and Windows Deployment Services so that does not affect me.

Contact Capita support details at Capita Education Support Services as they will be able to help and school should have a valid capita support contract. Sounds to me like it could be an issue with data that has been entered. Perhaps a child has a exotic character in their name?

I have been told that if a machine dies which has Smart Notebook 14\15 installed and one of the new licence keys (limited to 3 per new board) and the machine dies with a hard drive failure, or other unrecoverable windows issue there is no way to recover the licence to reuse it, it is lost and needs to be repurchased. I'd like to know people's thoughts on this please. It seems a bit unfair to me.

Is there a reg hack to remove the "Get Windows 10" icon from toolbar that has started appearing on Windows 7 Machines recently?

Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts or ideas please, or experienced similar with failing updates through WSUS
-
I have recently noticed that after a clean rebuild, when pulling updates down from Windows Server Update Services a lot (nearly all) Windows 7 x64 machines are totally hanging when installing one of the last updates (around number 134 usually) despite leaving the machines on all night. Switching the machine off dirty and rebooting then causes a Windows Updates Failed error with a rollback of most updates it has tried to install. Checking the logs 120 updates failed on one machine and 134 on another. The problem is I am not sure how to identify what update its hanging on and causing the problem as it will show failed on all updates it then rolls back and not just the single update it hanged on installing that was causing the problem. To make the issue even more bizarre some machine on rebuild pick up all updates without issue, or fail on a couple (but different updates) making it difficult to narrow down what one is causing the issue. Does anyone know what the failing update might be, or how I can find it please?

IPConfig Blocked by ISP
CommodoreS replied to CommodoreS's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I have been told: "In order to allow the return icmp decrements through the firewall this will require a new inspection policy on the firewall that is not a best practice due to external security threats." -

My fault - Long day - I meant TraceRT. I can't change the subject now though. They are blocking TraceRT and not IPConfig. -
Smart Notebook 11.4 Corrupt??? Slides
CommodoreS replied to CommodoreS's topic in Educational Software
I never got any further on this as the web version did not fix the problem and not having a valid support contract with smart they are unwilling to help and assist. I think the best thing to suggest is to make a backup and keep a backup of the backup. Make a backup of your files before you open any more, so if they do corrupt you have a backup. -
We are using a new scheme of work which has a unit which asks you to run a TraceRT command, however the results are being blocked by the LEA ISP. We have asked them to allow this so we can run the unit correctly, but they have said they will not do this because of external security threats through their firewall. I have spoken to other people who have told me there is no security risk allowing this. I just wanted some other peoples thoughts on this, whether you think it should be allowed or blocked.

I believe my problem may have been resolved updating to 11.4 which is the last version you can update to, before needing to buy licences for the newer versions after that. Are the affected users using 11.4 or earlier versions? I also heard that DB Primary had a problem with E-Mails and Smart Ink at one point, but managed to resolve it, so it may be worth contacting them to see how they resolved it. A temporary solution might be to suggest using a different web browser as Chrome did not seem to be affected.

Google Apps for Education on Shared Devices
CommodoreS replied to CommodoreS's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Thank you for the reply. Although I have entered the E-Mail addresses I have not linked them to work through GMail, so am guessing they act like two separate E-Mail addresses (E.g. though DB Primary or Office 365 and GMail), but to be honest I am not really sure how that works either and can't see it explained anywhere. Does anyone know what Apps I would need to install on the iPads and Android devices for Google Apps for Education? I am also struggling to find out how shared devices work for management inside google apps for education. I found an official video from google on youtube but again it explains users own BYOD devices and does not mention shared devices. I have filled out the form for google to contact me, but this is the second time I have filled it out, as the first time they never contacted me, so I am not holding my hopes up they will contact me this time. -
Google Apps for Education on Shared Devices
CommodoreS replied to CommodoreS's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Looking here: https://www.google.com/edu/training/get-trained/tablets/introduction.html Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place? The situation is I have shared laptops, shared Android Tablets (not Google Play for Education certified) and Shared iPads and I want an easy way for the students (primary age) and staff to be able to use Google Apps for Education - an easy way for them to log in and log out and use all Google Apps for Education features. I am also looking for somewhere to tell me what apps\software would need to be installed on the devices, and perhaps if there is an autologout option as people will forget to log out. I have a google apps for education account and all students imported, but from what to do next it seems unclear. -
Official Google Chrome MSI updating to new release
CommodoreS replied to CommodoreS's topic in Educational Software
I had disabled updates through the GPO settings turning all automatic updates off, as a bandwidth saver, the fact students can't install apps so the update would probably fail and might also fail due to proxy settings. The idea was to update it with a new version via MSI. However the MSI is not uninstalling the product cleanly which is the issue - obviously items are being left or by using chrome it has added settings which the MSI is then unable to uninstall. I guess I am looking for a google Chrome remover cleanup script or uninstall tool. -
I am really not sure where to post this one, but I am looking for information on the best way to use Google Apps for Education between different platforms on Shared devices (iPads, Android Devices and PCs) The videos I have seen so far relate to each user having their own device or a device only supporting up to five users. Please can someone tell me if there is there a way to easily set up shared devices to use with Google Apps for Education on devices which will be shared by students at the whole school?

Official Google Chrome MSI updating to new release
CommodoreS posted a topic in Educational Software
A few years back I deployed the Office Google Chrome MSI 31.0.1650.57 GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise.MSI and it deployed fine through GPO and imported Googles Chrome GPO to manage Proxy settings etc through GPO. A while back I went to update to the latest MSI, telling the GPO to Uninstall From All Machines for the old MSI file and then added the MSI file for the latest version. This did not work and gave an error regarding Chrome still being installed, so as a quick fix I remove the new MSI and redeployed the old version again. I am now finding that the old version 31.0.1650.57 is installed on the machines and working, but control panel is not showing Google Chrome as being installed, and trying to uninstall using the MSI displays the error you can only uninstall products that are installed. Ideally I need some kind of network MSI to clean any traces of the old version of Google Chrome, so I can deploy the new version - as it does not seem to uninstall cleanly using the official MSI. Has anyone else had this problem before, and if so I'd be interested to know how it was resolved.
