  1. I would bump this, but found a VBS Script to do this: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows/114775-vbs-script-syntax-check.html And a post on another forum saying it should be added in the computer policy startup scripts.
  2. I have found a very simple VBS script to register a DLL file that has become unregistered: Set oShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") oShell.Run "RegSvr32 /s " & chr(34) & "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" & chr(34) If I want to register more than one DLL file in the same VB Script do I need to repeat both lines, or just the second one? E.g. Will this work: Set oShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") oShell.Run "RegSvr32 /s " & chr(34) & "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" & chr(34) oShell.Run "RegSvr32 /s " & chr(34) & "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" & chr(34) Or does it need to look like this? Set oShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") oShell.Run "RegSvr32 /s " & chr(34) & "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" & chr(34) Set oShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") oShell.Run "RegSvr32 /s " & chr(34) & "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" & chr(34)
  3. I have checked it the best I can and it seems to be OK, but in Essex schools the RM Virus Protect Licence is provided by Essex County Council Broadband through an agreement they have with RM. As a result the school can't purchase it through RM and therefore RM refuses to give the school support account access to any of the RM Virus Protect documents on the system - so the school can have the product but not allowed access to support documents to check it is working OK or fix any issues with it. When you phone RM Support up they will not give you support for RM Virus Protect because the support agreement is with Essex County Council who purchased it, and not the school. When you phone Essex Council up they don't provide product support, refer it back to their RM account manager and you don't hear anything back for weeks - eventually to be told they will not give you access to the RM Virus Protect support articles. Its a massive black hole and oversite and no one seems to really care that there is no way around this and it could be affecting the school.
  4. I agree - the thing is the school paid over £5,500 for 3 years CC4 support I'd like nothing more than to buy a new server, but this has also left the school strapped for cash - Its not easy to join another server onto a CC4 system and I really want to rip that RM system out and replace it with a vanilla server system. As the server and system is only 3 years and 8 months old they are a bit loathed to do this as they spent a lot of money for the system, training etc... even though doing this will save them money in the long run, and give them a quicker and more reliable system overall and even though the server has problems and system runs slow due to older equipment and CC4 requiring so many extra machine resources. The size of the network is small and has not grown - it just seems with CC4 and Symantec updates these have put more requirements for resources on the server which just cant cope with it.
  5. Just checked and the server was bought new in October 2009. Software Support expires in Oct 2014 (5 years after it was bought) and to make things complicated hardware support on the server was not renewed - I know that RM will probably blame the BSOD as a hardware issue and then refuse further support as there is no hardware contract on the server. They never had CC3 - CC4 went on it from new. It does not surprise me that RM sold the school a 06/07 spec system in 2009.
  6. I have a school thinking of getting Android Tablets. Is there a way to enter proxy server settings on these, as the LEA does not offer a transparent proxy, and setting up a internal transparent proxy would be too expensive. Just asking as I know my Android phone does not have anywhere to enter proxy settings, which I know you can configure these in the WiFi settings on Ipads.
  7. After doing much shopping around, Dell seem to offer the best value for servers. The following is what you can get for £1,117 exc VAT, inc Delivery: PowerEdge T110 II Tower Chassis, Up to 4x 3.5" Cabled HDDs Components 1 Intel Xeon E3-1240v2 Processor (3.4GHz, 4C/8T, 8M Cache, 69W, Turbo) 1 8GB Memory (2x4GB) 1600Mhz Dual Ranked Low Volt UDIMM (speed is CPU dependent) 3 450GB, SAS 6Gbps, 3.5-in, 15K RPM Hard Drive (Cabled) 1 PERC S300 3Gb/s SAS/SATA Internal Software Controller for 3.5" HDD Chassis 1 16X DVD-ROM Drive with SATA Cable 1 UK 250V 2M Power Cord 10A 1 Order Configuration Shipbox Label (PO Number, Ship Date, Model, Processor Speed, HDD Size, RAM) 1 Embedded BMC 1 C9 - RAID 5 with PERC S300, Min. 3 Max. 4 or 6 SAS/SATA Drives, Max. number depends on chassis Software 1 PE T110II Electronic System Documentation and OpenManage DVD Service 1 Base Warranty 1 1Yr Basic Warranty - Next Business Day - Minimum Warranty 1 INFO 1Yr ProSupport and Next Business Day On-Site Service 1 5Yr ProSupport and Next Business Day On-Site Service 1 INFO Declined Remote Consulting Then all you need to get is a Windows Server 2012 licence: £99.12 from Phoenix Software (about the same price from most other license providers) For Backups, buy a copy of BackupAssist and Western Digital Passport USB 1TB Hard Drives are £60 each - Get 3 or 5. So this has 900GB of SAS drives (being Raid 5) and the option of adding a 4th drive in the future if you ever need more space, and a next day hardware warranty for 5 years. No mouse of keyboard, but you can get a decent cherry keyboard for about £10 and a logitech mouse for £5. Yes, I know the PERC S300 is a software based raid controller, but with the high specs of the server it has never caused any performance issues. These servers run fast and can be used as a PDC to run all services in primary schools without any issues, and offer good value for money.
  8. I have a school with a RM EcoQuiet server running CC4 and it seems like it is not fit for purpose. It is abismally slow (trying to use the RM Management Console or anything else on the server requires a lot of waiting!) and has now started BSOD'ing from time to time - although the event logs are not showing anything specific which is causing it. The server is a Intel core Duo T2500 @ 2.00GHz. Memory has been upgraded from 2GB (what it came with) to 4GB (although it is a 32Bit 2003 R2 server). Mobo is a Tyan S5207. It has two 140GB Hard Drives which are Sata WD1500HLFS-01G6U0 (looks like they are these: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS 150GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Newegg.com ) - No raid or anything. The server seems to be lower spec than most of the workstations and it is struggling. CPU usage seems to constantly around 50-60% and memory usage is 3GB, with sqlservr.exe using 272MB, Rm.Networks>Comms.ServiceHost.Process.exe using 170MB and SemSvc.exe using 140MB. Most the other services are also RM services. 103GB is being used and backing this up to the RDX drive is taking around 12 hours. I doubt anything can be done as they have had it a while, but it just seems not fit for purpose and they are stuck with it and CC4 for the next few years as they bought a 3 year RM support contact up front to get a few % off the price. Anyone else had any situation like this?
  9. Erm... Like Dazzle and Tux Paint? I thought I made that clear.
  10. I need to register two DLL files to all machine to fix an issue. The script I have reads: IF EXIST "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\regsvr32.exe" "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll" IF EXIST "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" "%SystemRoot%\System32\regsvr32.exe" "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll" Can't remember if I need to do this as a User Policy or a Machine policy for this to work though. Should I do it as a user policy in: User Configuration>Policies>Windows Settings>Scripts (Logon/Logoff)>Logon Add Script Name: regsvr32.exe Script parameters: /s "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll" (Then same for ieproxy.dll) or a computer policy in: Computer Configuration>Policies>Windows Settings>Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)>Startup Add Script Name: regsvr32.exe Script parameters: /s "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll" (Then same for ieproxy.dll) Got a feeling users will not have the rights to run this, but also have a feeling my command syntax is wrong.
  11. Can anyone suggest any good graphics software that is like Dazzle/Tux Paint (apart from 2Simple which is probably a bit too simple for the needs). What are schools buying and using at the moment?
  12. Like the OP said, no one will really know until 3+ years down the line how well that specific make and model of laptop has lasted, by which time it will also be obsolete. Never had any luck with Acer so tend to avoid them nowdays. Have recently been going for as cheap as possible brand name Core i3 Laptops like HP Compaq and Fujitsu. There is not much difference between business class laptops and budget laptops, except at this time budget laptops are far cheaper, just as reliable and in most cases have exactly the same components inside, just with a different case on the outside. Laptop thinckness has never been an issue - weight sometimes is. There is hardly any difference in weight between those thin laptops and thicker ones. If it is saving £75ish per laptop thats a lot of money and soon adds up, and IMO is not worth the extra cost just to have a laptop which is slightly thinner. With microsoft education license pricing (being far far cheaper than commercial licensing), it is also far cheaper to buy a laptop with a standard windows licence and then buy a Pro upgrade license, rather than buy laptops which come with Pro licences. I have a trolley of older Dell Vostros (About 3 years+ old now) and they have lasted incredibly well (The batteries are still going strong!), and were a good price at the time but now Dells pricing is all over the place and they do not have any UK call centres and it can be difficult to get hold of your account manager, and even hard to place an order. Worst laptops I have come across are RMs with poor keyboards (keys missing all the time), the batteries don't even last 3 years before they need replacing and RM chip their laptops and batteries so you can only replace the batteries from them, and had an issue where they were out of stock of a specific battery for months just as all the batteries in the laptops had died and needed urgent replacement. Also not easy to get hold of spare parts like major brand laptops, and much too overpriced. Ergo are not much better - Just had a load of older Ergo laptops suddenly just stop working for no reason at all.
  13. As far as I can remember this setting just skips the Domain Membership screen from appearing during the build process (making it silent build so no user input is needed). I will give it a go though, and see what happens next time I build/rebuild a Win7 machine.
  14. At the same spec - perhaps 0.25kg heavier and a much cheaper £241.65 these Fujitsu AH512's are good value: Fujitsu AH512 Lifebook - Laptops | Ebuyer.com They also have a good battery life, and most parts on them are quite high quality ones made by other manufacturers. As for warranty, at this price its cheaper to save money on warranties and just buy a brand new one if it breaks and is unrepairable. Also remembering the warranty does not cover the screens and other accidental damage which is more likely to occur, rather than hardware failure after 2 or 3 years.
  15. I have noticed when using Firefox or Waterfox on some servers, the web browser is really laggy. A bit like if you had a incorrect graphics driver installed. For example as I write this it is taking a few seconds for the characters to display. Yet using other Windows 2008 R2 servers I do not have this problem - all use the same server hardware and have latest graphics drivers installed, but it is only Firefox/Waterfox which is laggy. I did some research into this, but never found a solution. Does anyone have any ideas please?
  16. Please can someone help me. I have added Windows 7 Rules to Deployment Workbench to what I expect they should be. However when building machines they are not joining to the Domain, and I am having to join them manually. Can anyone help please? The Rules are: [settings] Priority=Default Properties=MyCustomProperty [Default] BitsPerPel=32 VRefresh=60 XResolution=1440 YResolution=900 TSGuid=Deploy windows 7 DeploymentType=NEWCOMPUTER _SMSTSORGNAME=SCHOOL NAME OSInstall=YES SkipAdminPassword=YES UserDomain=DOMAIN.LOCAL UserID=Administrator UserPassword=PASSWORD SkipProductKey=YES SkipUserData=Yes SkipDomainMembership=YES SkipApplications=YES SkipAppsOnUpgrade=YES SkipBDDWelcome=YES SkipBitLocker=YES DoNotCreateExtraPartition=YES SkipCapture=YES SkipComputerName=NO SkipComputerBackup=YES SkipDeploymentType=YES DeploymentType=NEWCOMPUTER SkipDomainMembership=YES DomainAdmin=administrator DomainAdminDomain=DOMAIN DomainAdminPassword=PASSWORD JoinDomain=DOMAIN UserDataLocation=NONE UILanguage=en-US SkipPackageDisplay=YES SkipProductKey=YES SkipSummary=YES SkipTaskSequence=NO SkipTimeZone=YES SkipLocaleSelection=YES UILanguage=en-US UserLocale=en-GB KeyboardLocale=en-gb;0809:00000809 TimeZone=085 TimeZoneName=GMT Standard Time SkipFinalSummary=YES SkipSummary=YES WSUSServer=http://SERVERNAME FinishAction=Restart BOOTSTRAP.INI [settings] Priority=Default [Default] DeployRoot=\\SERVERNAME\MDT-Deploy$ SkipBDDWelcome=YES SkipAdminPassword=YES
  17. I thought I would post this here incase anyone else has the same problems I did with these. Brand new Fujitsu AH512 laptops with Win8 loaded, but being loaded on the network as Win7 laptops. Go into the BIOS (F2): To change these settings it is necessary that a Supervisor Password is set. Advanced – Boot Configurations – Fast Boot : [Disabled] Advanced – Boot Configurations – CSM : [Enabled] Security – Secure Boot Configuration – Secure Boot Option : [Disabled] Also make sure the latest BIOS is downloaded and installed, as I had an issue with the loaded BIOS where I was getting 100% CPU usage and laptop was very slow. Installing the latest BIOS resolved this issue.
  18. This has to be the most bizarre and specific problem I have ever come across (and I have come across quite a few!) I have some new Fujitsu A530 Laptops which I have built using Win7 via WDS and Deployment Workbench, using the same image I am using on other machines without any issues. The problem only seems to be affecting Microsoft Word. When used connected to the network the laptops work fine and so does MS Office 2003. Looking at the MS Office settings everything looks as expected: The problem is when using the laptop Offline in Offline Files mode. When loading MS Office 2003 the following two errors are displayed: Checking the Word Settings again shows these are not what they should be: And as a result when closing word the following is also displayed: Now heres the odd thing: This is only happening on these Fujitsu A530 laptops. They are using the same WDS image as the other machines, the same (test) user as other laptops I have tried, exactly the same GPO policies, but it is only these laptops which are having this problems. There is no BIOS update available for these laptops. I have tried the same config on a Dell Vostro 3700 laptop and it worked totally fine as exepect - No MS Word 2003 issues at all. I am really looking for some good help from the communitie on this one. Its just not a logical problem at all.
  19. Care to remove those two red dots with something more green? Admin Templates>Control Panel>Programs>Hide the Programs Control Panel Also needs to be disabled. Yet no where does it tell you this. Thanks Microsoft! And everyone else!
  20. Not to worry. I found the other setting in AD which also needed to be disabled to make this setting effective. I hate it when two settings have to be applied in the right way to make the other work and you also have to hunt for it!
  21. I have a Win 7 Laptop on a 2008 R2 Server When a staff user going to Control Panel - Uninstall a program This displays: Your administrator has disabled programs and features However I want them to be able to access this. I have disabled the AD setting: Admin Templates>Control Panel>Programs>Hide "Programs and Features" page set as Disabled However this message is still appearing and users are unable to uninstall and change programs. Is there another rogue AD setting someone which is keeping this disabled?
  22. Is there a way to default Windows 7 Safe Mode Boot Screen to "Start Windows Normally"?
  23. I have this laptop connected to a Windows 2008 R2 64 Bit server. The network printer is not showing. When trying to add the printer manually an error is shown: Unable to install printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000006). This is the same error whether I try and add the printer through its share or directly to its IP address, and I am using the latest Win 7 32 Bit printer drivers from the Konica Minolta website which are working fine on all other Win 7 32 Bit laptops. I have gone into printui.exe /s /t2 and removed the printer drivers but this has not fixed the issue. I have also tried adding and deleting some reg keys I found on other forums, but this made no difference. I am not getting many errors in the event viewer, but am getting an error when the group policy for the printer is trying to apply. In Application an error 4098 "Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070006 The handle is invalid'. This error was suppressed. I have a pretty much identical laptop next to this one where the printer is working fine. Only think that has happened recently is someone has installed Office 2010 on the laptop without installing Office 2003 (not me) so I am wondering if that may have caused the issue. The printer is a Konica Minolta bizhub C35, and I have no other network printers I can try. I could reimage the machine, but as this seems the only issue I would prefer to fix it and figure out why this has happened. I just installed a HP Laserjet 4250 Driver on LPT1 and that installed fine. Same 0x00000006 error if I try and install the Konica Miniolta printer onto LPT1 though, so does seem to be related to this printer.
  24. Thanks for the help and info. As a temporary fix at the time I created another share for the T:\ drive called Staff2 and updated the netlogon script to point to staff2 and then the laptop could access all files on the T: drive again (despite both shares having exactly the same permissions). After reading your post, just to confirm that option C seems to have fixed it. It looks like something got messed up in the offline cache (still think something relating to the supply user) which affected this. I have also now tidied up shares and permissions to take things back to what they should be and how they were. Just came across a similar problem on a XP machine, but the registry key for XP is different. If anyone is searching this it is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache Key Name: FormatDatabase Key Type: DWORD Key Value: 1
  25. I have deployed Smart Notebook 11 using the standard MSI/MST method in group policy. I have just downloaded SP1 which is five MSP files. What is the best way to deploy these to update the already installed software?
