We have just been told that there is a push for Teaching Assistants to go on new "Basic ICT Support" courses and these are being funded by the government... They will be taught on Printers, Printer Jams, how to set up PC, basic PC trouble shooting and basic IWB trouble shooting..

Hi We use County Provided Netsweeper and our own Ranger to control Students access to the internet.. Yet it seems that the students are just getting past like the restrictions aren't there.. All Site Computers use the one port as we do not have a seperate internet access for Admin.. We have to keep youtube open for the staff as they use it for T&L... so I blocked Youtube in the title bar of Ranger... The kiddies now use Frontpage or another Web Software to bypass the Ranger title restrictions.. We can't block frontpage.. any idea on how can we stop this ? Also Proxy Sites... Netsweeper doesn't seem to keep up and when you block one ten more appear.. I believe there are mailing lists on proxy sites that emails new updated proxy sites to the list members.. and the students get these at home and use them on site.. any ideas on how to stop this ?

Well that sucks... we could do it before and it wasn't abused... so why restrict us now ? Aren't we trusted ?

We are already giving all the poor "Parents on dole" kids brand new PCs or Laptops and free high speed broadband for as long as they are at the school... Paid for by the government..

There is a term called " Effective Construction Management" this is what the BSF builds are run on.. The Builders and Architects start the building process not knowing what the final budget is going to be and work to the restraints as they evolve.. So you might get adapted rooms..

We had this... 3 ICT suites open Plan..... My God was it Chaos.... 1 disruptive loud child kills 3 classes.... one loud teacher teaching kills the other 2 classes... we had to build partitions after BSF had left and the 3 ICT suites work perfect now :-)

Too bloody true.... Most of my day is spent repairing battered ICT Rooms... 1 Cover lesson in a ICT room causes more damage than a heard of Elephants.. and it takes an hour or 3 to get the room back into order.. Plus the Teachers with bad classroom management skills cause us no end of problems

would it be possible to Up the Last Posts on front page to 15 or 20 ? As the site is very busy and 10 is too little for the traffic

Well i was paranoid about my role as Network Manager.. But now it seems there is going to be a massive cull of Technicians as well.. I was speaking to a LEA BSF advisor and he said that the schools because of the Managed services would not need so many technicians on the ground in one site...

Was reading that Blog that Grumbledook did a link for and saw a question posted to the Blogger.. Jill... I undestand thet the BSF ICT Company will be taking over and controlling the Schools/ Boroughs Network.. I understad the Technicians might be TUPED over to the new company to be Toner Changers.. But whats going to happen to your Network Manager as he won't have a Network to Manage anymore and I doubt that he will be paid a Network Managers pay to change mice and keyboards.. ? 02 February 2008 07:38 Jill C said... Basically RM make their vacancy bulletin available from a point to be agreed with the school, and any of the technicians can start applying for posts anywhere. RM say (and I think it's true, not least because of the amount of BSF projects they're involved in) that there are lots of positions available, including international postings. Basically, though, BSF will be removing the strongest technical staff from schools unless schools can fund an additional post from their own budget and find a way to make it satisfying to the post holder. Personally I think this is likely to be detrimental to education in the long term. What this says is that all staff won't be TUPED and that technicians are now at risk as well as the Network Managers... 1 school losing 1 NM and 1.5 Technicians ...

Sorry back now... We have Mac's on our Domain and we have a seperate Apple Server that is basically a stand alone Domain for Music.. As to configure Apple's to work on a PC network with all the AD shares and security without a decent understanding of Apples is near impossible.... If he want's to make a standalone domain so that the users use Photoshop and users have their own areas he has to create new user accounts on the "Apple Network" these can be imported from a CSV.. I cannot understand why a Network Manager would be so naive and quite frankly.. stupid .... to think that they'll just work..... There are members on Edugeek that will correct me regarding the Apples... but they know and understand Apples and how to properley configure them to a PC domain..

We have a Vanilla Server 2003 / XP Network with Ranger for Networks W have just purchased 80 new PC's to refresh the ICT suite Pentium D, PD-945 Dual Core 3.4GHZ/800MHz, 2x2MB Now... Do I go for XP SP3 or Vista Business.. I know that copying files is slow but there is a fix to this.. So what advice can you give me ?
