  5. well I think with all the Vista runaround it will be easier to redo the build with XP Pro SP2...
  6. Sorry... wasn't being mean...
  7. Please justify your statement .... As Novabackup does SQl, Exchange, Open files and Disaster Recovery... So why is it not as good as Backup exec ? http://www.novastor.com/pcbackup/backup/n_backup.html
  8. I have switched to Novabackup.... for Servers... a lot lot lot cheaper

http://www.partnershipsforschools.org.uk/ This is what it says about ICT Staff under "School Worker" They specifically mention ICT Technicians... (looks as though schools are starting to hear) I have underlined 4 things 1/ Not all staff are guaranteed jobs 2/ So we become Teaching Assistants as well.. 3/ Servers moving off site (so if in 5 years time or earlier the school want's to ditch the Managed Services they can't because they do not hold the servers)... I know of a couple of Schools in London that desperately want out of their Managed Services.. How much would it cost to re supply and make active a set of servers for a school again.. at least £50k.. and how off puting would that be..? 4/ The present staff at the school are not skilled enough to run the servers.. they are skilled enough to only hold the Teachers hand Information specific to ICT support staff and technicians As part of the ICT Managed Service, network managers and technicians in schools will be given the opportunity to TUPE across to the company running the Managed Service. This does not mean that technical staff will disappear from schools or that someone will have to be 'called in'. The local authority and its schools specify the level of technical support which they expect from their Managed Service partner. This might include the retention of one or more full-time technical staff on-site in each BSF school. In such circumstances, the technician might be the same person with a different badge on their shirt. They would be working to a clearly defined set of service standards and would be trained to help them achieve those standards. Many 'technicians' actually perform a much more varied role in schools. With the increasing reliability of hardware and software, many schools have developed their technicians so that they provide direct support to learners and teachers in the use of ICT. As technology develops, remote technical support of ICT equipment will become more efficient and offer better value for money; indeed in some cases this remote 'fixing' will be carried out by the machine itself. Consequently, pupils and teachers will gain from the opportunity that having a wider role will bring to technical staff. In all BSF procurements to date, the local authorities have required the ICT Managed Service provider to TUPE across all existing school ICT staff and - in many cases – these staff continue to work in the same school, albeit for a different employer (if under the admitted body scheme, they probably have to work in the same institution). Additionally, in most BSF projects to date, the solutions being tendered include the provision of a central (usually locally sited) data centre on the wide area network. There are usually still some servers retained in schools for functions such as content caching, but most server functions transfer to the data centre. Once the data centre is established it will need managing by high quality staff who understand the education sector. It is important to remember that the commercial ICT partner will need to recruit locally and will not be bringing in staff from outside. The local authority should make this a condition of awarding the contract.
  10. We have just bought 100 Desktops and they have all come with a VISTA Business CD in the box.. Now we build and then deploy VIA Ghost..... Will (as with XP Pro) the single VISTA Business key work with all 100 Desktops ? We have no Vol License as these are our first VISTAS Will they work and update Will they just work by themselves and not update.. Or will there be issues ? ?
  11. We are building our first VISTA Images and are finding that the build done as Local Administrator and Domain Default user is not being forced onto the users.. The Students are using Local Profiles (until next years 7's when the new RAM with Roaming Profiles will take over) When the student logs on with Ranger installed they get MASSIVE icons and the wrong graphic settings... Any idea how to force this "default" Profile?
  12. We have 660 PC's, 200 Laptops, 9 Servers... and 13 ICT Suites.. So it's rush rush rush :-)
  13. Hi What are the rules concerning Vista and backward license for XP Pro SP2 ? As I have been shipped Vista Business and it clearly states that I ordered XP Pro.. Now with some laptops I get 2 OS Disks 1 VISTA and 1 XP... here I only got VISTA disks.. Will the VISTA Key work with an XP OS from Elsewhere ?
  14. March is avaiiable now so you might skip Feb
  15. we were a early BSF School near Bristol and managed to keep the ICT Support In-House.. The idea of FUD (Fear, uncertainty, and doubt) is so it spreads from Support staff to Governors.. It worked in my school and it worked well... it's another version of Rallying the Troops... motivate them enough and they'll won't care what the BSF consultants have to say... tar the BSF ICT consultants with enough tar and and some will stick...... as soon as they walk in to talk about the New World Order they'll have a cloud of suspision over their heads which will remain.. We want people contacting their MP's their LEA.. we want people talking... we know most Heads in good ICT schools oppose Managed Services but are forced into it because it's too late when they find out whats really going on..... lets get them talking way before it's forced upon them so they question the logic .. I will keep to my side of the deal..
  16. Again you come along and wreck an angle that might mature.. nice one.. We know that teachers are going to have to contact the helpdesk to try and fix the problem themselves.. this is written all over the BSF propaganda... fact.. so lets try.. The Idea GD is to get the teachers stressing about this so that they might give a bit of a stronger opposition.. Jesus christ how naive are you? We aren't talking about Toner .. we are talking about say.. a network cable being unplugged.. the helpdesk will try and get the teacher to plug it back in.. But again you do what you do best and always make the BSF Managed Services seem such a good thing and if anything might be wrong it can be fixed.. you are your own worst enemy... I seriously &^£$!% give up with you.... Please help your fellow ICT Managers/Technicians instead of killing us
  17. Well under the BSF plans the Teachers are in fact the first line of support... if they can't fix it they have to phone the helpdesk themselves and then they will with the teacher try and fix the problem...... Only after these avenues have been exhausted then a Technician will be called...
  18. This is what the original thread was about... Someone said that they were opting out and keeping the funding....
  19. Oh yea add to the list.. 10/ Teachers have to take a more proactive role in ICT support and try to resolve small faults themselves and then contact the helpdesk... who will try to resolve fault with the teacher... if still not fixed then Technician will be called...
  20. Channel 4 should be blamed for creating the "Skin Party" culture in the first place
  21. I think we should stop worrying about schools who's ICT is not up to standard.. we all know the the BSF is a good thing for tham... we should focus on the schools who have good ICT and how we can keep ICT in-house..
  22. The Business Case does not mean that an seperate company consisting of Technicians or an outside company has to run the Network.. You can submit a business case for keeping the ICT Support in-house with the SLT and Head of ICT handling the funding and complying with the strick EU regulations with the procurement of ICT Equipment and infrastructure.. R
  23. Let me put my version forward (emotional language version of course) 1/ You will lose control of your Network. (no more sticking on software quickly for next lesson) 2/ Your Network will be run and managed by a private company 3/ Your NM will no longer have a network to run so will either be TUPED as a Technician or retrenched 3a/ Hopefully the rest of the technical staff will be TUPED to the new company. 4/ Your running costs could double. as BSF costs are around £100pa per child 5/ The Technicians will no longer work for the School and can only be instructed by the Managed service company 6/ The school has to report all faults through a helpdesk and then the technicians will receive instructions. 7/All requests for support will be assessed by the Managed Service company to see if they are in the SLA if they are not additional charges will be incurred (i.e.. vandalised Mice or keyboards) 8/ The school will have to find 4 years funding to pay for the Managed Services.. approx £100 per year per pupil (BSF pay for 1st year only) 8/ You will be forced to buy all future ICT equipment through the Managed Service Company (while contract is enforce), 9/ If the NM does additional work like, CCTV, Access Control, Cashless Catering, Photocopiers, AV and Media, after hours school functions...these could be additional cost ontop of the Managed Service Contract If you have a good network and a good network manager you will be most probably worse off under the BSF forced Managed Services. There is talk of an Opt out of Managed Services clause with the ICT but still keep the funding... if a good business case is made..(not sure if this is true yet) All the buzzwords and mumbojumbo like "'ever widening route to empowerment' and 'ICT can make learning more effective' etc etc).......to provide consistency and best value. ......but will also allow for flexibility so that it does not stifle innovation or school individuality" Is to make it all look super duper and justify them massive cost.. ... but many schools already have this and are doing very well...
  24. This is what the tread was discussing.. someone mentioned that they could opt out and keep the funding if they had a good business case....
  25. This was a very very important thread as they were saying that there is an opt out if you have a strong enough business case...
