I remember when that was published and that it was discredited the very next day due to how the tests were conducted. Anyway, Vista is good now. In my experience there are two things to be aware of. Remote Desktop from Vista makes the target machine look like it has CPU at 100% until you run this command: netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled The other thing is you need to disable offline files unless the share that you will be syncing is quite small - certainly under a Gig. The new way that offline files works is great, but if the shares are large then the machine will be tied up with doing comparisons all day long.

Yeah, I installed XP SP3 last week, but haven't had a huge amount of time to play with that test machine. Certainly it 'seemed' quicker than it had been before. @FN-Greatermanchester, The Vista SP1 is something like 460MB in size.

When was the last time you used Vista on the network? You can relax now, it's all good. Your post sounds like it was written last February. The bit that shocked me is your damning of the group policies though, that's the best bit, you can use all the XP policies plus a whole truckload of new useful ones. I am of course, just talking about putting the Vista OS on the network. Making sure that all your curriculum software works on Vista is another matter.

How long does the whole process take Dan? We are looking at them at the moment. I presume and hope that getting a dodgy batch of 60 would be unusual and just bad luck for you.

Sorry, I don't know what you mean? What is "at install time"? I just press F12, log in and leave it. The PC joins the domain, auto logs on sets up the software to install and then reboots to install it. Job done.

Did you use RIPREP, or make it part of the GUIRUNONCE or similar? I want to auto install it as part of my RIS build's first boot. What command line switches can I use to make it silent? Cheers guys.

No, we won't be installing Vista for a few years. No way that the hardware will cope for a long time. Would have been nice to get Office 2007 out there though.

Right, it's just that we're rebuilding the whole admin domain during half term, and since we have been entitled to use 2007 from last November we thought that that would be a good time to install it. We'll have to wait I guess. Thanks for the info.

After many trials of different things, we've ended up having to give the kids Full Control over their own folder again. It's because one of the Office suite fails if you remove "delete" as a permission. It's either Publisher or Powerpoint, can't remember which one right now.

I know that the states always get slatted for re-making British sit-coms, but I think that the American Office is actually really good.

How slow is slow? Can you time a PC to the logon screen and then again to the desktop.

j17sparky, thanks for the support Power Admin is the minimum that SIMS will run on, but sometimes that fails too even when you run the scripts to alter permissions on folders locally and only local Admin will work. To be fair to Capita though, it's my local borough who tell us to run as local admins, and they do it by default - not even bothering with Power Users. You may have a different setup/modules that allow you to run with different user rights.
