No, you can use XP with BDD 2007 and the WDS component. Certainly some parts are not compatible - but you can definitely use WDS and ImageX with XP.

I have done, and probably will move completely over to it at some stage, but ghosting a whole IT room in one go is easier at the moment.

They have obviously bitten off more than they can chew and need to invest in more servers. I presume it's not just us suffering from them? I'll probably end up moving the admin email away from it. (Only 5 mailboxes - too small to justify exchange)

You need to read and download Business Desktop Deployment: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/desktopdeployment/bdd/2007/default.mspx?WT.mc_id=bddov From the tools/add-ons that you can get with BDD 2007 you'll need imagex and WinPE 2.0. It's really too big for someone to give you a step-by-step here, you should probably just give it a go and report problems which we can help with.

you need to have a look at the 'parent' software - Business Desktop Deployment of which WDS is just a part. You can have a driver and package depository in that which makes it very powerful.

It is very nice, but no "broadcast" way of deploying unfortunately, so it still doesn't completely take over from ghost. They actually want us to walk to the machines to start the process 8O

Thanks for the post, but that won't be much use on a domain unfortunately. Someone earlier mentioned process explorer too and it is a pretty cool tool - but it doesn't give you the root cause of the problem either. It just lists the 22 processes that are running under it at the time. It would be nice if there was some tool that would should you the CPU share of each of those processes. Anyway, from looking at those processes I think it is safe tp assume that wuauserv.dll is the guilty party. I may just disable Windows updates for now (lowering the priority made no difference)

If you just remove the office updates and re-sync do you think it'll fix the problem? I'll give it a shot

@rdhawkins - unfortunately that is not ideal when it's a svchost process as many processes may be using that. Initial returns on the Hotfix are not good I'll try the manual emptying of the softwaredistribution folder next.

I need this to work for OWA externally. The selfSSL works great within the domain, but we need something for home users. The security warning in IE7 'looks' much more serious than it did in IE6, any idea how to get a 'proper' certificate? I know absolutely nothing about it - so n00b speak only please
