Whoa - you deploy gimp to the pupils? 8O Kudos to you.
-
Bossman, what is your response when you have a pupil who comes to you on Wednesday having used up all their credits and "I have to hand this assignment in today" or similar tale of woe? That is where most systems fall down. Do you refuse them, charge them, or extend their credit?

I've downloaded and installed it here too, but no idea what to do with it I guess loads more documentation to plough through

I've been playing around with the new MS deployment tools. Taking an image and deploying an image is pretty straightforward, but I can't deploy an image that completely overwrites the existing drive. The default behavior is that the User's folders are retained - obviously that is very handy, but sometimes you need to completely wipe a PC. any idea of the switch? Currently I am using: d:\imagex /apply T:\visa.wim 1 c:

They have, but they've been reluctant to roll it out to a couple of IT Rooms for testing.

I agree webman; you get the champagne, I'll grab the glasses.

That looks good alright. Another Google search I did came up with PrintAudit which looks good - needs a client installed on every machine so that it can catch local print jobs. Does Papercut use a client on each PC?
-
He has about 15 curriculum network printers and lots of local printers for the admin staff - he has no print quota software, which is obviously allowing people to do what they want. I recommended Print Manager Plus to him as we use it (but I'm not 100% happy with it myself), I'm not sure that it can monitor local printers as well as network printers though.
-
That sounds interesting - what do you mean by that exactly?
-
We spent £8000 on printing last year which I thought was a lot, but a friend of mine works in a secondary school in London with 1,600 pupils who spent £50,000 (admin and curriculum combined) That's £31 a pupil. Are they out of control? What are you guys spending?

LOL Just getting myself one of these too. Does it need activation though?

Vista still requires antivirus, Microsoft stresses
eejit replied to tickmike's topic in Windows Vista
It's amazing that anyone could have believed that it would not have needed AV. I'm running OneCare on my home Vista machines and it's great. I hope that there will be a corporate edition of this some day. -
How is Clamwin in terms of Server Management and Deployment?
-
Great stuff. Just installed it on the test server and it went great. Now to try the deployment side.
-
I've been looking around for possible new AVs. Avast corporate looks nice, good website etc. I'm just downloading a trial, but really for AV if it installs well, deploys well and isn't a memory hog then that's as far as the trial can take you. I'll need some "real life" experiences too. Anyone using/used it? Cheers

Are you fully transferred over already? I heard that it takes a year just to move across fully, also that Capita put some blocks in the way by copyrighting the data so you are not allowed to export it to CMIS. This could all be bitter rumours though.

Staffordshire Job evaluation - Are you affected?
eejit replied to adicken's topic in Educational IT Jobs
Wow sounds outrageous. The thing is you'd probably be on more than £30k for the same job with a corporation - plus better kit and more support staff. I can't see how schools are going to keep their techies. -
Ok, Err... a friend downloaded this. It certainly works alright. Already has 2 critical updates Probably be around 10 by the official release on Jan 30th. A lot of the icons have been changed too - I think I preferred the Beta ones.
-
So we should get it "some time in December"? Has anyone got a more definite time?
-
I know that the global release is Jan 30th, but when are us in the Microsoft School's Agreement likely to be able to get it? I can give Ramesys a call on Monday, but maybe someone on here already knows. EDIT: I've just seen that there is a special thread on this, so please ignore
-
Oh no, we can't use the "Software restriction policy" any more. 8)
-
Cheers, I did *ahem* investigate it on a site I know and there is already a "Vista RTM activation crack" available already. 8O
-
Not much use without a code though. Is it likely to work with the RC1 code? I'd doubt it as the Beta codes didn't work with RC1

2 DC's - one getting hammered, one almost idle - why?
eejit replied to sidewinder's topic in Wireless Networks
Yes, in one domain in one location - you only have one Global Catalogue, but the other thing is about logging on. You don't need a GC available to log on.
