I did it at the old bailey a couple of months ago. First the myths about "getting off": The law changed in 2005, it is now very difficult to become exempt, so most people's stories will apply to the old, more lenient laws. You can get deferred, but only to a later date within the same year. They don't give a monkey's about work commitments. How to get off: They DO take note of booked holidays. So, if you want to guarantee that you will be not given a case that'll last more than two weeks as soon as you get the letter through, book a 1p Ryanair flight to anywhere that commences on your third week. Just to be safe, they will not give you a case that is expected to last more than a week. Language. At the end of the first day one of my fellow jurors passed a note to the judge saying that he couldn't understand much of the evidence, he was dismissed from all jury service and we carried on with 11. Having said that though, I'm glad that I didn't try to cop out. More than likely you will spend most of your time waiting around. I was lucky though and on my first morning got a case that was scheduled to last 2 weeks. It ended up taking 4 weeks, and it was an enormous hassle to me, my family, and my job, but it still was a life changing experience that I will never forget. When you see how corrupt law makers can be you will be glad that a system like this exists to keep check on it all.

I have some print monitoring software on the server, but we have some local deskjet type printers. Is there a way that I can connect to the shared local PC, then RE-share it on the server so that I can make the new share the default? That means prints will go to the print server and thereby be logged? Doing my head in I must admit.

Excellent guide, thanks for that. You are dead set against using virtual servers, but you don't really say why. I presume that was due to the technology that was available in 2007, but running TS on Hyper-V servers now should be fine, would you agree? We are looking at using Ericom as the brokerage service. That's what I was just about to say. Really easy to set up too.

Managed to get the components for a 12GB server for £765.38 ex. Moving above that is tricky. I can do 24GB for £1,987.40 which is a massive jump of course. I've done the above using an MSI X58 Platinum which will allow you to have two lots of 3 x pair DDR3 sticks. Means using the new i7 core CPU which might be nice to check out anyway.

Upgrading the RAM from a real cheapo unit is not ideal as they just won't have enough slots. I don't really want to buy two lesser units either as I'd ideally like the flexibility of having at least 16GB in one box. Perhaps I should just be looking for motherboards that carry 8 or more RAM slots and take it from there. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Not looking for high quality HP servers or anything like that - mostly going to have some non-urgent servers on there - WSUS etc. and some test network stuff, so for that reason price is everything. So far I'm at the £1,600 mark so just want to see if I can go lower. Thanks again for the replies though.

yeah, it's not 'necessary' but it really makes a better looking system. Otherwise you'll often get staff coming up to you going "AAAHHHH, the kids can see everyone's folders" The fact that they can't open them or delete them does not always placate the worried member of staff.

I want to virtualize a few non processor hunger servers into one box. When you go above 8GB RAM though, prices generally sky-rocket. Obviously they need special boards with many RAM slots, so I understand the price jump. I just want to know where I can start from. CPU and disks are unimportant to me as any modern CPU will be more than fine, and I'll probably whack in a couple of WD's new 2TB disks. Cheers for any help.

No, it doesn't come in Vista or higher, but you can use the XP version as long as you copy hypertrm.dll and hypertrm.exe across.

"ideally" the shares should have been created hidden so you don't see them all when you put in \\servername You should have to go to a share directly with \\servername\bloggsJoe$ for example. It sounds like your pupils folders are shared - but not hidden. This may not be a problem depending on the share & security permissions. If the permissions are wrong then you may have a bit of scripting to do to re-share them all. I can't really advise further though as you may have current polices etc. that depend on the share being \\servername\bloggsJoe - those would all have to be changed too. So, to sum up - "it depends"

We have a few RM Ascend 2040A PCs and one of the desktops looked a bit fuzzy. When looking for new drivers for the graphics card I was shocked to see the web full of stories about these cards being faulty. They are Nvidia G8400 cards. Our machines have been fine since we put them in, and I haven't noticed anyone complaining about them on here. Anyone have problems with them? Hah! You weren't expecting that response Quackers But to be fair Microsoft often don't know how licensing works. We've had much trouble in licensing Sharepoint and most departments give different answers. In the end we've been pointed at EDLARs by Microsoft as they say they'll probably understood it better.
