  5. because the apt-get is out of date the engien is out of date and keeps comming up with warnings. I have downloaded the 8 clamav 0.91.2-0volatile1_i386.deb packages then try to install them via dpkg -i but keeps comming up with the above errors.
  6. I have tried to do that but I does not work as there is a issue with dansguardian everytime i do this its driving me nuts and i was not apt-get ing it i was doing a manual package install
  7. Ok I might be running befor i can walk. Have dansguardian installed fine all working but have a problem with clamav out of date ave tried to update useing package but complanes of libgmp3 not being installed. I know i have libgmp3-dev installed and a few others but this does not fix the problem
  8. cant you access the comand line like on ubuntu and sudo passwd root set a password and then sudo is not able to be used except with password (diffrent from user)
  9. Actually its your ass if you are the pat tester yes the school will get into trouble but such has been pointed out in this thread before it is everyone's responsibility and if you are head of it equipment that's your ass in the firing line. and people should test every day as part of pat a visual inspection can tell a lot. and electrics do not fail like that to short or electrocute someone there needs to have been someone doing some serious damage and the fuse (pat test includes checking fuse rating) rating is the correct. this would cause a overcurrent and the fuse would blow before electrocutes you.
  10. Yes but I have found it better and to add the desktop you just apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and its there. I like to decide what to install Can do a desktop version if you like. but that way i only need one ubuntu disc and if i want a desktop i can put it on simple. But most of the stuff i work with I use server and remote to it.
  11. with refrance to the law bit I was trying to make it simple the heath and safety at work act Is where you will find a refrance to it and if it can be moved it must be tested and yes it includes every thing if you do it in rental home you also have to test washing machines fridges freezers etc etc. It covers everything that is connected to a ring main and does not have it own fused circuit basically everything with a plug on This includes ups servers switches etc etc tanken from book What is Portable Appliance Testing? The 'Inspection and Testing of In-Service Electrical equipment' (usually referred to as Portable appliance testing or PAT), was introduced to enable companies & organisations comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations. To meet these regulations it is necessary to have in place a program of inspection and electrical safety testing of portable appliances. Other legislation of specific relevance to electrical maintenance - The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. What electrical equipment needs to be tested? The regulations cover all items of in-service electrical equipment, this includes all movable items connected to the mains supply by 13A BS1363 plugs, BS EN60309-2 industrial plugs or hard wired via a fused connection unit. In addition to being responsible for the safety of their own portable appliances, companies are are also responsible for the safety of electrical equipment brought on site by employees and contractors. so it includes some stuff without plugs. But also it is a very gray area as IET says one thing and the HSA says another (Made a phone call today with reference to this just to make sure and was told there is no law as such people just like to cover themselves if it goes wrong and was not tested and a union classes it as pat the pat tester of that is then at fault ?? take it as you will Me i test every plug. http://www.hse.gov.uk/electricity/information/law.htm you are right offices are not every year but schools are ?? this is the same as in my pat book code of pratice http://www.plugtest.co.uk/frequency.htm
  12. Law states if it has a plug It must be tested as even though you might never move it if there is a problem pat testing will pick it up. IE fuse blown so someone put bigger fuse in. This would fail pat test pat items are any item with a plug i have even had to do wall heater in the past. This is part of HASAWA. Its a nightmare but if that projector catches fire and school burns down and fire-brigade put it down to electrical fault on projector and the insurance ask to see pat log (must be kept for 5 years) and it never been done insurance will not pay out only example . Unless it has its own curcit and is wired into the mains then it must be tested. This does include projectors, whiteboards and the data colectors the plug into the mains.
  13. Have not got round to doing them yet but will do soon. Any probs pm me and i will sort it (pay particular attention to spelling and grammar) I'm a dyslexic.
  14. There are all sort of tests the worst one for a pc is the isolation and resistance as it put 500Vdc down the line also touch testing dosen't always pass as pcs have a built in leakage so you do a soft test on pcs only put 100 mA Been a while since i did it I always get a refresher from local collage that way I get to find out about new legation and it only cost £10 and takes about 2 hours and most of the time they don't bother charging.
  15. lol me i do the lead then do the pc but never flash test it but still do all the others.
  16. I find the easy way to install webmin on ubuntu is edit the sources.list and webmin rep and thep apt-get install webmin works a treat
  17. OK first bit is up. The main reason i am doing this is there are many resorses out there but they are all over the place none of them are in one place and i hope to add to this IE raid install, dansguardian, vmware, webmin, and more if I find any. http://edugeekwiki.rm-charlton.net/index.php/Ubuntu_Linux_6.06 if anyone want to test it please do and send me any issues you find
  18. If i was you i would seek union advice as this is a minefield of problems waiting to happen ?? also with ref the test you did unless it is a recognised qual. (city and guilds) be very careful for example I did a one day c and G course and it qualifies me to pat test you also need to have been tested on The IEE code of practice for In-service Inspection and testing of electrical equipment which you must have with you if carrying out any test ?? Like i said this is a minefield and if you get it wrong you are liable the other thing you need to know about is class 1, 2, testing and testing pc's which is a totally different ball game as they have built in leakage. http://www.pat-testing.info/who.htm http://www.theiet.org/ (used to be iee) Have fun and dont get caught as my instructor said when I did the course.(cost of course about £75)
  19. Ok I have started I am doing a basic Ubuntu 6.06 first with a basic ssh access to it. I will then be doing Webmin squid Dansguardian VMware (server) If any one else has something that they would like a how to for i have got enough free time i will put it on my list and do it (including screen shots).
  20. Edugeek wiki is where i was thinking of putting it and as i am looking at doing it via a vmserver i can put some screen shots as well.
  21. Ok this is a quick question. I am now hooked on linux playing with it all the time (much to kids annoyance filter at home squid dansguardian) I know I am new to linux but i would like to write some how to and basic setup ie the one i have ubuntu webmin with squid sarge and dansguardian module installed and set up as a proxy (makes network at home run faster) if you think it would help please vote i will also do one on raid as well and intrest and i will do it as i have got a lot of free time. The problem I found was that there are a lot of how toos but there are all over the place would be good to goto one site and find them all.

    nethood links

ok here is the problem Getting fed up with all the drives especially for little programmes and files that dont need a drive extention so i would like to deploy the links. here is a peice of vbs i found on the net and use at the moment. Const NETHOOD = &H13& Set objWSHShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application") Set objFolder = objShell.Namespace(NETHOOD) Set objFolderItem = objFolder.Self strNetHood = objFolderItem.Path strShortcutName = "Curriculum folder nm" strShortcutPath = "\\marcus\Curriculum" Set objShortcut = objWSHShell.CreateShortcut _ (strNetHood & "\" & strShortcutName & ".lnk") objShortcut.TargetPath = strShortcutPath objShortcut.Save it works really well but being a noob at vbs not very good at creating my own scripts i have about 5 of these at the moment and want to put it into one script. Also i want to be able to delete old ones all the links i create end in nm to define the links i create from the ones users create. I hope someone can help please.
  23. it is a server. And i think i have sorted it /boot raid 1 three disk and /swap and / in raid 5 it seems to work from what i have found out if anyone has any other idea's please say. I will be testing in full tonight.
  24. Just haveing a little play at the moment i have got 1 disc with ubuntu on and 3 others software raid 3 I was wondering is there a way to use software raid to install ubuntu on and can you boot to it if so how. And if not what is the best way to do it.
