Guess it depends how you interpret the role. Our it support is a professional external outfit so the role of ict coordinator and network manager would be the same person. As we provide the support and development strategy we have no budget or authority to action anything without said persons approval

Sounds like lea is fishing for business and want you to be a pilot for any bugs. No need to do it whilst you are 2012. The capita roadmap has 2012 supported for the foreseeable future. Sql 2008 r2 supports ends with the summer release this year where 2014 is supported from I think summer this year. Unless you want to have a play with 2014 in a testing environment stick with 2012 for your live environment for a couple years. Technical road maps can be requested from capita or downloaded off their support website

When I First joined the sschool I thought even the non technical network manager shouldn't have the only admin password. Now the password has been changed and locked in a safe. All tech guys have been given a separate admin account and a user account and elevated the network managers permissions just enough for him not to give me grief. He has since left and the new network manager has no more privileges than a normal staff member. The most powerful thing she can do over any other teacher is access her c drive and delete print jobs from a queue. Makes for a happier network when you're not battling with who may have screwed something up. I'm glad I implemented this as soon as i did as years went on I come to learn there were lot more teachers that did know the admin password then did. Scary thought

Good question which I am sure someone more who is moŕe experienced in this field will confirm. I would like to know also. My opinion... I would imagine it would open in protected view mode. If it didnt it cannot be any worse then the fake invoices documents and besides your users will need to authenticate.

playing with these features at the moment as we are doing a lot with Follow Me Print and I have to say I am impressed with what I have played with so far. I currently only set up the basic web print limiting it to pdf however would like to configure for office docs too eventually. How have people done it? I have a dedicated print server. has anyone just tried installing office on the print server rather than building a clean workstation (seems pointless to me imo and waste of resources)

Don't take my word on this but I have had several conversations with our sims manager generally about the development of slg and I believe as we are a self hosted SLG customer we get the teacher app free of charge

its more a matter of what information you don't say rather than what you do as I had enquired the use of the epos on a windows 8 tablet for a sports day and the canteen wanted to move refreshments on to the field. was still true and I needed assistance supporting it. they offered a solution of installing it on a windows 7 workstation as the UareU fingertip drivers do not support windows 8 yet. there is nothing illegal about it as I am quite sure that they could not tell you what you can and cant buy in fear that you would go somewhere else. they would obviously frown on it as we are using their software on an unsupported platform if we use anything other than the hardware they provide and any problems you experienced on the EPOS would be their first goto response. A lot of the issues if not all the issues I have experienced with VC are mainly database issues and Parentpay issues so they wouldn't ever need to support the EPOS unless they had to upgrade them. something again which can be done by any support technician Although as a precaution I have saved a couple of the old tills in low use area just in case I can replace all my tills with refurbished all in one a lot cheaper than 1 x £1500 epos

Hi Richard I don't have any epos to sell however I thought I would offer a suggestion that we have done. As you probably know Vericool EPOS till are hugely expensive and the tills we had are still running XP embedded. So I had a thought of installing the epos software on a standard windows 7 workstation. you may find like me we have a couple spare pcs knocking about. we loaded it up with memory, fresh install of windows 7 installed only the software required to run vericool, added a fingertip scanner and touch screen monitor. (you don't necessarily have to have a touch screen monitor, just use a mouse.) I have tested the software on windows 8.1 tablet and although the software worked I could not get the UareU fingertip scanner to work as the hardware does not support windows 8 yet. Not to bad if you don't use biometric scanners. I doubt Vericool support this solution if you were to have any problem with your makeshift epos but we rarely have support calls relating to the EPOS itself. Good Luck Paul

Health and Safety / Data protection / Fire Risk should be easiest way of getting around this issue. Server cabinets require a clean flow of cool air to reduce the risk of over heating and fire risk. Unlikely I know but by storing paperwork you are increasing the risk of fire, you are reducing/restricting the air circulation and increasing the risk of injury. I have had many scuffed knuckles trying to working my way round our server cabinet. our server cabinet even tore my shirt whilst squeezing behind it.

40GB??? ouch is that the mdf or ldf alone or combined. # of Students ~ 1300 using lesson monitor etc etc our mdf = 6GB our ldf =1.5GB our ldf use to be in excess of 50GB. you can shrink the ldf in SQL studio management and is fairly simple and routine but ensure that you have a full backup of SIMS that you know you can recover to otherwise S*** will well and truly hit the fan Your ldf is huge because your SQL database is set to Full recovery so it doesn't truncate the logs once a backup is taken. If your mdf is huge then your staff really need to do some housekeeping. I would liaise with your Sims support team to help if you are unfamiliar with SQL and SIMS. As for responsiveness within SIMS, im sure I can speak for majority of similar sized schools will all have responsive issues general within certain modules of SIMS, that is the capita way. We have had countless calls open to capita re performance and all we get is perform housekeeping, reindex patch and validate membership. if they are just reports that take ages to run, redesign the report from scratch. we had a couple that were years old and apparently SIMS upgrades can impact some of the older reports. Saving pre-existing documents are fine. I have only notice this happen to pupils and staff who are restricted members of our network. local and domain admins don't appear to have a problem when saving. All staff and students have a profile path defined in AD as \\server\username$ When the affected user creates an Excel or Powerpoint and tries to save it the browse dialog does not appear when clicked. This does not seem to affect other office apps eg word as the affected user is able to save new documents the symptoms do NOT follow the user if they were to log on to another computer the symptoms are NOT present if another user logs on to the same computer as the affected user something I noticed when the affected users can not save, there is only username$ profile path as a recent location unlike the users who can have two recent destinations, Username$ and desktop redirect location. As a restricted user they all have as you expect read only permission to the redirected desktop share on our server. \\server\Desktop$\desktop to remedy the issue short term we can delete the users local profile on the computer and when she logs back on the user is able to save new spreadsheets or powerpoints again. the desktop share also reappears in the recent location which leads me to wonder what it is about the desktop share that causes this to happen and only to new xls and ppt. A workaround is also cloning another file, renaming it and deleting the contents, re saving as you work. I am taking a punt that for what ever reason the first time they run an office application for the first time on a computer it is corrupting something whilst their profile is being cached Has anyone any ideas. any questions I will be happy to answer Thanks in advance Paul

Not that I know of. like I said that feature is not in Outlook at present however it would be a great addition if it was. maybe log it as a feature you would like see implimented

No issues but that would depend on the setup and smoothwall configuration. if I recall when we set it up it was series of task addressing many areas of the network being configured but in brief we too have a separate VLAN for BYOD, tagging the vlan through your network switches onto your AP's then on smoothwall setting up a VLAN interface for BYOD with an IP address tagging that VLAN, set up a transparent proxy using that IP address with redirect users SSL page (with session cookie), set smoothwall to offer DHCP on the BYOD interface. Smoothwall released a main update which included BYOD so there could be a revised way to setup BYOD but we have found this method effective and reliable smoothwall are very helpful and I am confident they will be able to assist you with your requirements

Hi I understand this would be a great addition to future releases coming for a support background it would be nice to tell people that; I like most people have a life on the weekend and I will respond to their email when I return. Unfortunately Outlook does not have this feature so I took it upon my self to make a workaround. you could deal with this 1 of a few ways which I had implemented you could tell the staff member to stop being lazy in obviously a customer service manner it is only a couple clicks and no more than 15 seconds of their busy schedule. if that doesn't work you could recommend a signature detailing the his/her working hours. a bit like a shop opening hours. people will start to get the hint. if they are not happy with that and you want to show off you could implement the following but be warned implement it for one and everyone will want it. believe me it is more hassle than it is worth. Using Outlook set up an email template which will act as your auto reply message and save it in templates in the outlook templates folder set up an rule as shown in the picture You are basically setting the rule to look at the day in the header and respond if it matches. I have also asked it to flag the email to follow up but you could do what ever you wanted after that with the rules. this would only work if the computer was left on and outlook was open. you could also run a vb script using rules also but the script would have to run but this would also rely on outlook being open and connected

I did the same. I literally deployed FMS and Sims update the night before they pulled the update. However I have not heard any complaint either.

Thanks Davit2005. I wonder if my theory is correct about the students finding a unique way of completing first run causes this save glitch. it maybe now they no longer have that option they cant do whatever they are doing to break it

Ideas I have thought are the users taking an unique step during the first time run in office but when I have quizzed the user no one can remember. I do have first run disabled by GPO however the only step that shows is using recommended settings. (if any one knows how to supress this on first run please let me know) Has anyone any ideas. any questions I will be happy to answer Thanks in advance Paul

I had the exact same issue with office 2013 with smoothwall and Harry Small's solution works however we had to make our own no authentication rule and put the addresses above in that user defined list. the difference may be down to update version between smoothwalls First Create a "No Authentication" Category under Guardian » Policy objects » Categories and add the sites above Then in Web proxy » Authentication » Exceptions include the "No Authentication" category in the policy
