    DHCP query

I think it's just bad practice.. I don't think there's anything wrong with using these IPs, it's perhaps just because some (crappy) software will assume a w.x.y.255 is a broadcast and ignore it. We have 24 bit ranges split up per VLAN, so we have w.x.y.1 and .2 as routers, and there's a good reason for not using w.x.y.0
  2. I have no plans to upgrade to IPv6... I've only got about 1000 devices wired up, if I squished hard, I could fit it into a /22 bit range. The ISPs that provide me with internet access on the other hand, should be planning to do so.
  3. We find if they spill other liquids (coffee tea etc) onto keyboards, we take them out run them under a warm tap, then a cold tap, it takes all the sugary sticky and other junk that has accumulated. Then leave to dry, and after a few days they usually work...
  4. In Server 2008, they have renamed IAS to Network Protection Server, and it is very Wizardy.. I've been fiddling with it, as I want to move from our current IAS servers on Windows 2003, to Server 2008. Not got very far with it, but it all seems to work the same.
  5. The main headers I have in my Budgeting spreasheet are: Workstations Workstations - Library VM Servers Notebooks Netbooks Servers \ HP Networking Software required Software Purchases Support Broadband Misc Data Projectors Toner Cartridges \ Drums \ Fusers New Thin Client Alternative Cabling Audit They don't all have figures for them, we don't need to do anything for the VM Servers this year, so this is £0 (but next year it will have some money by it, as I'll probably want to increase the RAM). The HP servers are the old ones I have retasked. There's a few things like "Workstations - Library" which is an alternative to the "thin client" we want to introduce. The "cabling audit" is because I want to pay someone to come in and work out where all the cables go from/via/to, and relabel them all, and we have about 1500 sockets, and I'd say only half are in use. There's also a further "repairs and maintenance" which is just a 10% of the above figures, which is usually enough to give me leeway when someone makes me buy Adobe Master Collection... I map the purchases upto the codes that Finance use, so it's easy for them.
  6. It's also best to move Windows and Office at the same time. The staff will complain that "everything" has changed.. moan moan moan.. rather than the twice complaints you get if you move up one and then the other. I've been ignoring the students complaints that we don't have Vista or Office 2007...
  7. Which means if you want to convert a machine that has a MAK key into one that uses a KMS server, you do this: cscript slmgr.vbs /ipk FJ82H-XT6CR-J8D7P-XQJJ2-GPDD4 for Windows 7 Pro, change the codes for whatever you're using... .. typical this, I spent ages last week trying to work out how to do it, and some bugger comes along and writes up after I found out.. This Volume Activation Deployment Guide being the original page.
  8. I got this in an email from Microsoft: Dear Software Assurance Customer: Starting in June 2010 the Home Use Program (HUP) benefit will begin upgrading the catalog of products from Microsoft Office 2007 to Microsoft Office 2010, allowing your employees to bring the latest version of Office home* So.. wait a few weeks... Once it drops the Office 2010 onto it, I'll start offering the Home use out to people, I don't see any point in allowing people to get 2007, when we don't use it in school. I only signed up, when I thought it might have 2010 on it.
  9. We have the Master Collection.. oh dear hordes of stuff we don't need and probably won't use. The annoying this we've found is that the new Premiere and After Effects will only run on 64bit Operating systems... Do they have a automated update server of any sort.. I've had a look around but never managed to find anything.
  10. Oops, I didn't realise this was a bad thing.. I know what I'm going to be doing the rest of the week... Does anyone know if I need to have the DHCP server on the same domain as the DC ? I'm just wondering if I can use one DHCP server for both my domains.

    Budgets

We're a tech College with about 1500 students so for comparison. Well, I got about £150k last year, including everything, but I had also been given a wedge of cash at the previous April, because I'd just been made Management. Because we had some extra money left at the end of this last financial year, I was given a further £100k this April, so I'm not expecting to get the full £150k again this year.
  12. Yeah, but 5gb downloads really slowly on an 8mb ADSL line..
  13. When you RDP before you connect there is an [OPTIONS] button, and then click the "Local Resources" tab, click the [MORE] and you can take you local drives to the server. It tunnels through the normal 3389 port.
  14. Windows 3.1 had this problem.. if you had a special foldername. It was a bug then, but it got fixed for WIndows 95. If you were running command and created a folder by typing MD [ALT+255] that is press and hold ALT and then type 255, it put in a special ASCII character, that would completely confuse Windows.
  15. You don't need to worry about the task manager within the guest. VMware ESX assigns the processor cycles to the guest when it needs it, so the guest is showing you the percentage of the virtual processor that it has been assigned, IE all of it, which is actually a good thing. The guest task manager graphs are now pretty useless. To really assess whet it is using, check the graphs that are in the VM host.
  16. Well basically, Marketing is the study of Markets.. The people that ask you questions in the street are Marketeers, they ask questions, to find out what people are interested in buying, so they can work out who they are able to sell to, based upon what wants they have. It's not be confused (like this) with Advertising.. which is trying to apply all the lessons learnt by the Marketing people to persuade people to buy (which is where the sales people come in).
  17. Wordpad doesn't have a spellchecker, and comes with Windows.. Which is what we use when we need to have a machine setup for an exam for the "Broken arm brigade".
  18. Hmm.. I've got a MAK and KMS code on the Licensing site, but there's no download yet.. Now that I've signed up to the Technet (with what appears to be two separate agreements) I can see all these things listed but "unavailable", and one (or rather two, one x86 and one x64) of them is the new Office. I wonder if I need to wait for it to update something..
  19. I saw this Marvell Moby Tablet - the Linux factor | Education IT | ZDNet.com and thought, depending on whether it actually comes out and if it is usable. It's a cheap way to push out IT. I had originally thought about getting a load for the students... if they break it, you buy another.. There's very little on their website Marvell Technology Group Ltd. -- The Market leader in Switching, Transceivers, Wireless, PC Connectivity, Gateways, Communications Controllers, and Storage because it's not ready yet.. but they're talking about an Apple iPad style device running Linux, for $99 - so about £100 would still be affordable. Although lets hope it's nothing like the lower end of the Netbook range. But the Moby, and a USB keyboard... and depending on how fast it works.. it should be enough for most stuff. You'd probably have to convert your SIMS to SLG, and then buy more desktops for staff rooms.
  20. I'm gonna ask the obvious question... Did you change the bit that says "BAINS" into whatever your domain is called ?
  21. If you're any good with VB scripting (or anything that can interact with windows registry), then most of this stuff is stored within windows. Recent activity is localed within the "User Assist", see ROT13 is used in Windows? You?re joking! Didier Stevens and then Quickpost: Windows 7 Beta: ROT13 Replaced With Vigenère? Great Joke! Didier Stevens dor windows 7. If you dig further into the User Assist stuff it will give data on when the files were last opened, and how they were opened (IE using the Start>run, clicking on icon on desktop, etc). The user logon is recorded on the Domain controller, although if you have more than one (which you should), it will record this "randomly" across them.
  22. ...well I'll take that as a resounding NO then ? I don't suppose anyone knows how to stop outlook from having its continual memory leaks either.
  23. Send them to Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test If you have a decent cache it will be stupidly fast, we're getting about 60mb downloads through a 10mb connection... otherwise I would check via Linux friendly ISP
  24. We use Mcafee and have done for some time, it was here when I started and I've had no issues with it, apart from the usability of the old EPO v2 (the central console), the EPO is now upto version 4.5, and is browser based, LDAP integrateable, blah blah... If you have as many machines as we have (over 500 but less than 10,000) they just sell you a site license which is about £3k a year. I know someone who recently moved from Sophos to CA, as they got a good deal from some reseller - possibly Dabs.
  25. What does this do ? Do you get different names for different users ? We used to have a mandatory profile for Windows 98, and I was thinking about returning to it for WIndows 7, but we always used to have the author as the same thing, when I would prefer it to be per person.
