YouTube for Schools launched
User3204 replied to AngryTechnician's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Oooh, I've sorted this for our school. It wasn't very obvious, but I was editting the pages to make it look pretty. I created a user shared area so now we have http://www.youtube.com/user/schoolname, within this I created a playlist, which wasn't working. But when I then changed the settings on the http://www.youtube.com/user/schoolname page so that the default was the 'videos' rather than the 'feeds', suddenly when I loaded up the http://www.youtube.com/user/schoolname it showed up, whereas when it was on 'feeds' I just got an error that stated I wasn't allowed to view the page because we'd signed up to the youtube for schools service. Now I just have to create a polite email to the teachers telling them how it all works. Although, the students have now been able to access youtube for about 6 hours, and they managed to find it very quickly. I've already had a teacher complining that youtube is now useless for them.... -
YouTube for Schools launched

Did people sort out the invisible channels / playlists ? I've joined up and created a channel and a playlist for the school, but can't seem to find them at all. The rest of it is working, all nicely blocking away the annoying stuff, although staf fhave already asked why they can't get to the things they've put up themselves. Do they need to all create a YouTube account ? -
Hi, We have a bunch of Apples, but mostly Windows machines, so I'm probably doing things the 'wrong way'. Anyway, we have After Effects (plus the rest of the Master colleection too), and the students are having some small problems with it. Every time they open it they get a message saying that the Cache disk is on a network drive (or something like this, the exact error message shas escaped me), but it causes them slowness apparently. The users home folder is redirected to their Windows AD account home folder, whcih is the way we want it for most things. So what I tried to do was move the cache disk from the own folder to the local machines drive, but I've obviously not doing this the Apple way. What I did was create a folder on the local disk called 'Cache' and then put in the relevant folders 'Media', MediaDB' and 'Disk', then I told AE to use these three folders as the Cache disks. It works for me, so I though I'll copy the .plist file for AE to all the users, slight error was the folder didn't exist on all the machines, so I logged into a couple, and created them, which worked for me. Then when I logged into it as a demo student account, this user doesn't have the required permission to access the folders. Now I could logon to all the machines, and change the security of this bunch of folders manually, but I'd rather not. What should I have done, and is there anyway I could script this through the logon ? I'd also like to have any other Cache folders stored locally, and I suspect there will be a way to do this, that doesn't involve me going around all the computers. We do have an Image of the Computers, which I could do the changes on, but we found that the Adobe Master collection didn't like being deployed like this, so we install it after the re-image. Thanks.

There was nothing flagged when I checked.

Well, it seems to be due to the Vmware cluster, I'd installed the client tools, and this made no apparent difference. But we've stuck it onto an old server we had spare, a single core dual processor Xeon 2.8ghz... and it runs better on this with only 2gb RAM than it did on the Cluster. It's still whacking the processor on this server. Although it's yet to be tested en masse, but the ICT teacher says it's running better than it was before... So now he wants me to buy an i5 multi core 8gb RAM etc etc, because we're going to be using it a lot... riighht... I'm sure it needs that. If I'm going to buy a kick-ass server, it's going into my VM Cluster and NOT to be used soley as a webserver...

I'm running on Linux Lucid, I have looked through 'top' and when nothing is accesing nothing is happening on it, when students start to use it, we get a load of apache2 sessions firing off (not one per student, but we get about 20-30). When I check with the http://moodle/server-status page, I get the list of what these apacher are, and they relate to 'http://127.0.0.1 OPTIONS ~ mumble mumble' which when I check on Google (using the proper string that has escaped me), I get references that say this is okay, it's just the Apache server talking to itself (!) in a good way. I have run the PHPMyadmin and looked at the InnoDB settuings status that is displayed in there, but other than a few red marks (which I'm not sure I understand) there's nothing that stands out to say 'HERE! THIS IS WHAT'S CAUSING IT!' .. so I'm a bit confused... When I check on the VM cluster, it reports that the CPU is what is being overused, not the RAM, which is totally counter to what I expect.

Hi, We're just introducing Moodle as a VLE. Previously we had an unused Uniservity via the LA. But, the machine seems to require massive amounts of RAM and CPU. We're running it on Vmware v Sphere4, and so far I have changed it from the original 1CPU and 4gb RAM to 4 CPU and 8gb RAM, and now it is running faster, but still not fast enough. The teacher says it can now handle 30 students, but it's not 'fast'. I have looked through Google relating to Moodle and/or SQL on Vmware, and there's talk based around older versions of Moodle, but nothing about the new version. It's running on Ubuntu server Lucid. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should change to make it fast ? Or where I can look to see what may be causing the slowness ? The VM cluster reports it maxing out the CPU, even when it now has 4 CPUs.

Where do you fit in to the 7 billion people in the world
User3204 replied to MK-2's topic in General Chat
When you were born, you were the: 3,969,706,106th person alive on Earth 78,273,047,899th person to have lived since history began I'm a little concerned that this put me before the 4 billionth place, it's going to get really worrying when kids are starting at school who were born after 6 billionth place. -
I had this problem too, but when I connected it through the server, it used some "Universal PCL Driver", which didn't work, wheras locally it used a Windows 7 one. I haven't gone back to it, but I'd been hoping I could load the Win 7 drivers onto the server to make it work... I can MAKE the print server do landscape, but then they can't do portrait...

Faulty switch(es) on your server core then ? Any DFS root must be pushing through a lot of network traffic, I DON'T use them, apart for read-only stuff, as if f'r example user logs into \\domain\users\%username% it attaches them to the server \\server1\dfsusers\%username% any AND all changes to this will have to be replicated to all the other servers on the root \\domain\users\ so the files will be copied to: \\server2\dfsusers\%username% \\server3\dfsusers\%username% \\server4\dfsusers\%username% or however many servers you have.
-
What are you putting on the DFS roots ? When this was all new technolgy, I read somewhere that you only want to put stuff onto it that gets changed infrequently, but needs to be acccessed a lot. So good for netlogon, apps shares, shared desktops / startmenus Bad for user shares. It may have gotten better since then. If you run Wireshark on a server when it is running slowly, you should be able to see what the traffic is doing. I made sure that no-one apart from the ICT techs can write files to them.

The only place I allow music, is when the staff member has installed iTunes, and attached it to their 'account' which means their assigned laptop is linked to their iTunes. I don't think this is entirely legal, but it's a lot closer to it than just ripping from a CD. Any music that the students have illegally copied to their own area is illegal, but since you can't be 100% sure they haven't done any uploads, as long as you have a process for regularly checking for MP3s this should hold off the BPE. Officially the only music we store is: 1. the stuff they are making for the qualifications. 2. any thing they have purchased for use in plays.

Possibly due to the cost, currently we have FMS, which works fine, but Academy we have to transfer so we have to look at three quotes in the usual way. Of course, Capita have quoted about a quarter of the price that one of the others have quoted.. so currently leading... on cost, AND on usability. There's just a few little niggles that She has with FMS, the fact that everyone can see and use any budget is mildly annoying her. I'll pass all these onto her.
-
Well I never knew you could reshare shared printers, it never used to be possible. Are you sure the security is set right ? Are you sure you have all the right drivers on all three machines ? Is there anything in the event log on any of the machines ?
-
Sounds like dodgy RAM, take one of the sticks out, or swap it. If it's when they're trying to open 100mb powerpoint(s) AND SIMS with loads of tabs AND 50mb Publisher(s) it'll get to the dodgy sections quite quickly....

I stop the students from being able to lock machines, the staff have their own notebook / desktop, so if they lock it, it's them who unlock it.. I used to have an auto-logoff on the few machines we have in the teachers ICT suite, but since the only people that use these machines now are the student teachers, I'm slowly removing the machines when no-ones looking.

TaskForce CO2 - What do you guys think?
User3204 replied to sven's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I used to have Shutdownertron on XP, but left it off the Windows 7 image, as it says it doesn't work.. I've been getting this sort of software being spammed to me recently, I have tried the TaskforceC02, but it doesn't like my multiple domains... I've just had this one recently so I was planning to play with it next week in the half term.- 16 replies

Hi, We're in the process of changing to Academy status, and the Finance Officer has asked me to look at software used for the finances. Currently we use FMS for purchasing, and Sage for payroll. But, as part of the Academy thing, we're going to have to be able to do more reports etc, What she, and I was after was wondering what software people are using. We've had a couple of quotes to do the changeover, from Capita and Sage, and someone or other. I have to admit, not knowing exactly what she's after, but if there's any finance related people on here, in an academy school, I hope you know what my fiance officer is after. Thanks.

Yep that's the scanner I have. £170 when new, but won't work with Windows 7.... X( I've sorted it, finally got the windows update to talk to the microsoft update server, and 100 odd updates later, it works. I think it was probably the one labelled "Group Policy Preferences"... bah! I've even managed to install the drivers, now I just have to work out how to use it, Windows 7 is nice, there's a builtin wizard, but not so with Vista, or if there is, I can't find it.
-
Nope. It gave me an error.... something about not being able to access this... I'm not in front of it at the moment, so I can't remember exactly. This was whilst logged on as a Domain Admin too. I have tried the Policy checker tool in GPMC, which tells me that the PPC server is inaccassible, so check the WMI @Michael, it's not the software, it's the drivers... I have tried. I'll head back towards doing all the 100s of updates for it, the trouble is, I know there's no Vista updates on my WSUS server... because I haven't allowed any of them.

You have a mixed desktops, some are Windows 7, which uses the "Documents" folder, and the other is XP/Vista which is using the "My Documents". And then something is changing the desktop.ini file in the Documents folder to call it "My Documents" It's a bug, or possibly WAD depending on you point of view.

Image won't work on one type of machine
User3204 replied to Techdw's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
We had this on older machines which had the SATA HD set as PATA in the BIOS. Are you sure it's not just a broken machine, we've got a few that do this too, a bit later they stop working completely. The ones we're having problems with are Lenovo Thinkpad n200, some of them just don't like WDS.
