Over 50m... CAT6a should give you 10Gbps over about 100m - good for future proofing. CAT6 might give you upward of 1Gbps. CAT5 Probably just about 1Gbps but really pushing it. OM2/OM3 fibre might be overkill but thats what I'd use.

Surely you have transparent proxy and filtering on your Smoothwall that doesn't require a certificate? Can you not set up the second SSID to use another VLAN, DHCP etc and pass that traffic through the transparent proxy ? Or is your Smoothy provided by the LA where you can't tweak it ? EDIT: In fact you shouldn't need a VLAN just another DHCP scope.

I would say realistically you have 3 options: Business broadband, FTTC, leased line. Leased line will incur a minimum 3 year contract - price dependant on speed (Our 50mbps is approx 1800/annum over a contracted 3 years plus a £500 (ish) setup/installation charge) = Guaranteed uncontended (not shared) bandwidth = guaranteed upload and download speed fixed at 50mbps. FTTC is slightly different - price dependant on package. All quoted speeds are UP TO x mbps but with a (usually) guaranteed minimum = Guaranteed contended minimum download and upload speed. Business broadband - The same you get at home but with less contended use. * Contended = Quoted bandwidth is not guaranteed because the total bandwidth allocion for your area is shared between subscribing customers/networks - e.g. if the whole area is on the net at the same time... your speed will suffer. A good economical firewall/filtering option is to choose an ISP that offers cloud hosted filtering such as Sophos Web Gateway. Popular ISP choices for education are Exa, Wave 9, Zen and there are others. They are all BT/Virgin (and others) resellers. All of them will be able to provide you with everything you need. Call and get a rep to visit. They will set you straight. Bear this in mind - For some reason (in my experience) BT and Virgin resellers always seem to offer much better prices, service and support than the originating IPS's themselves. !?!

I think you have to re-share it with the correct permissions. E.g. They delete their current share and you re-share again with the correct perms.

Agreed. Airserver is really good.... not so amazing on streaming video from my phone on MotoGP weekends... But its really good, Apple/Google/MS compatible and reasonably price imo.

Just for the record, I have loads of these running Win 7 x64.... mix of Realtek and Broadcom. No problems reported whatsoever in months/years. I'd be looking at Windows.

Yep. Agree. And you can granularly adjust your filtering levels with AD authentication. I.e. not one single filtering policy for all.
