If its a client in a client server network have you looked at Wake on Lan?

Use Clonezilla to take an image onto a USB or CD, or alternatively use nLite to create another windows disk with slipstreamed updates. nLite - Deployment Tool for the bootable Unattended Windows installation Alternatively just download all the service packs and stuff you need onto a CD, its amazing how much time is spent downloading during those frequent reinstalls!!

You can use a 'drop folder' style where the users only have write access not read? We have a student shared drive where staff can read/write and students can drop their work off in a folder which the teacher can then pick up.

Hi RobK, How are you getting along with the settings for CVM? I would be interested in how you are managing the new CV groups with your existing groups?

I have come across this when Vista first came out. Was to do with a corrupted section of the registry in the profile section. I used to follow method 1 on the following microsoft tec Error message when you log on to a Windows Vista-based or Windows 7-based computer by using a temporary profile: "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded" Hope that helps

We are probably going to use EAP-TLS due to Authentication may not succeed when you use PEAP-MS-CHAP-v2 as the authentication method for an 802.1X connection in Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000 which we have previously had problems with (staff coming back after holidays and having hundreds of laptops which then have to be booted with the cable as users can't log on!!).

I think machine only authentication will be the answer here, I have tried a lot to get user auth working without having to stick app data back on C: but can't seem to get round the fact that when the machine is disconnected from the network the user account can no longer access its certificates on the server due to the network connection being severed. Seems like a completely stupid thing to do!

Or a better question may be: Has anyone successfully deployed 802.11x authentication with 'Machine with User Re-Authentication' AND have a redirected application data folder......

Hi all, (In the words of Dwight Schrute) Question, Has anyone gone down the road of 802.11x authentication with a redirected app data folder before? We don't have roaming profiles so app data is redirected and stored on one of our servers. This works ok, but when it comes to 802.11x auth the machine will authenticate ok then the user logs in.... The user then gets kicked off just after the logon process has completed due to the certificates for EAP-TLS being stored in the %appdata% path. Has anyone got this working? I suppose we could use machine only authentication which would solve this problem, but I would be interested if anyone has come across a solution. (Also not validating server certificates is not a good solution as its a security hole I would not like to open!) James

Lol I've never experienced that before with my Desire. But I have had a similar thing with my old nokia 3310 a long time ago, if you replied to a contact and then deleted the number from the to field then reentered a different number, it would still go to the original contact! At least I noticed it before it was too late All OS's have bugs its just the nature of the beast, I just find it slightly warming when its apple though lol

I have the desire, battery life is pretty standard for a smartphone, they are all pretty much charge every day affairs (the good ones anyhow!!) Would highly recommend it, it is absolutely fantastic with Facebook and social networking integration with the sense interface. If anyone is having issues with battery I would recommend updating (through the Settings -> About Phone -> check for updates) as the new radio updates are far superior in battery usage. Its v v speedy as well, and with the new ScummVM for android I can now play monkey island

Check the default gateway settings, sounds like it hasn't configured through DHCP properly. You should be able to click on the wireless icon in the bar at the top and goto network config. Manually set an IP and mask with the correct default gateway and see if the problem disappears.

If the auto recovery process doesn't work try booting from the Windows media and going to repair the computer (after selecting languages etc) Goto the command prompt and type: bootrec /FixBoot bootrec /FixMbr This will restore a master boot record, to the first hard drive, which it sounds like yours has lost. Usually any Windows 7 disc will be ok for the repair process. Not sure if a Vista disc would do. You could also try using the Super Grub disk to try booting to various partitions. How did this problem occur? You may be seeing a broken hard drive if you havent deleted any partitions or removed OS's.

I have managed to get Lanview working over our subnetted network about 90% but am having trouble getting the ICMP packets that Lanview uses to wake up stations to get past the core switch which does the routing. Has anyone had any luck with this? I am thinking either directed broadcast or UDP rather than ICMP packets to wake the stations, unfortunately Lanview seems to not have the option of either I am using Lanview 3 btw

Hi all! Having some issues managing a HP Procurve 2626 on a VLAN other than VLAN1. (Well not technically) Basically I have managed to make the management interface VLAN 960 BUT i cannot seem to telnet to the switch unless I also have an IP address in VLAN1! Is it possible on a HP switch to change the management vlan? (Not using the Management-Vlan command as I don't want a dedicated VLAN for it, just for it not to be on VLAN1 so IP addresses can be reused) Ta James

Well I used to drink the Nescafe Alta Rica which is the closest to filter that you can get in an instant imho, but since petrol prices have gone up and my 75 mile round trip is costing more, I am relegated to a much cheaper (but may I say quite reasonable) cup of Alcafe Gold from Aldi. For less than 1/3 the price pretty good me thinks. Its certainly better than the Tesco cheap cack I bought last time, which somehow they have replaced the lovely aroma of coffee with the strangley unsatisfying smell of cabbage water... Anyhow back to my Alcafe!

Try creating a new aspx page using sharepoint designer and add the view into the page without including the master page, this way you will just get the parts you want and not the template. You should be able to do this in the design view and then turn it into an XSL data view webpart which you can then customise futher by getting rid of the headers etc.

Mine is: TCP Statistics for IPv4 Segments Sent = 128669 Segments Retransmitted = 1098 I dont think there is a set amount as certain network activities cause huge traffic at certain times and packet loss is an inevitability. I think in a ball park 1 - 2% is good but I have no frame of reference apart from what I heard a chap from RM talk about!!! I have had a look on the internet in the past and people haven't really put a finite figure down. I guess becuase it varies. I would try it on a machine that has just failed to map the drives etc and see what events are logged and see how many retransmissions there have been on that machine during that session.

You can view the amount of TCP retransmissions by using netstat -s -p tcp which will print the tcp stats for the current pc. Might give an indication if you are getting a lot of lost packets. On wireshark I think TCP retransmissions are shown as black items in the list.

Anything in the Event viewer? This kind of thing can happen when the network cable is removed from a pc during logon, any chance that you have a huge amount of network traffic at this time and packets are getting lost?

Yeah its brilliant. Our slower machines (admittedly appauling machines 256 ram etc) are in the order of 3 hours for the upgrade lol Its around 15 mins for the faster ones.
