Quotas for user home drives

What are your quotas set at for students (intakly or all the same) and staff??

We use to have a staggered approach -

 

Years 7 - 100MB

Years 8 - 200MB

Years 9 - 300MB etc..

 

Due to the increased use of courses such as iMedia all users have 500MB with sixth form students having 1GB.

 

We very rarely have any users who wish to exceed this limited, but we are strict and do not increase the space. There are always pictures that can be deleted!!

 

We have 1200 students.

 

Staff have 3.5GB

On average for us it would probs be set to about 1 - 1.5gb per student as alot of more of the subjects are taking use of video, picture etc. You need too look at what your current capacity sits at and then judge accordingly with number of students and what the subjects are doing. Though we are hopefully adding alot more storage this year to reduce the work load on us trying to make disk space out of thin air.

Even if you don't want to use quotas, you should use quotas. Even if it's a case of dividing up the total disk space by the number of users.

1.25Gb for students and 2Gb for staff (I think).

 

All the Art stuff has there own seperate area which they fill up as if SAS disk grew on trees!

500MB for students, 6GB for staff. That gives us plenty of room to expand for students that need it (typically KS5 ICT) and keeps the total size within our backup storage capacity for the total number of separate archives.

Every student starts with 150mb, we let them ask for more up to 500mb, but then we start asking questions. We have a few media students who have 3gb plus home drives due to them working on editing video of school productions etc.

 

Staff start with 350mb, and can grow to 1gb without too much grief from us, but after that we ask whether they could move things to departmental resource areas or delete things.

After replacing the storage server over the summer students were upgraded from 150MB to 1GB and staff from 150MB to 5GB (they had previously been on the same logical drive). This should be more than enough for the foreseeable future but there is the capacity to increase to 2GB and 10GB respectively. Some Year 11 ICT students have already needed theirs doubling but I have been assured this is only because of a specific unit that only a handful are doing.

Media work has kinda taken a big role in the school and I just can't stand students having to work off memory sticks that they might eat/loose - much safer to have their work on the network.

Google apps. It's unlimited for Google Docs, has 25GB email, 5GB Google Drive plus another gig for photos.

100 Mb students (upgradeable with HOY's permission) and 3 GB Staff.

Thanks for the info. I've never tried using Google Docs or Office365 before though it's on my to-do list!
