Hi, any help on this would be really good....

I have a teacher who has come to me saying her USB Flash drive is dead. Shes tried it at home, and on various computers at school.

I said that the likelihood of me being able to fix it are very slim.

After plugging into the computer, I get a USB Device not recognized warning message down by clock.

No sign of the drive in disk management, but I notice in Device Manager Unknown Device: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

This is the USB drive.

I have a Hirens Network Boot disk and I am hoping there may be something on there which may help me.

Does anyone have any suggestions. THis is my last day at work before the holidays and I would really like to get a resolve on this problem. :)

Hi,

One of our teachers had the same issue with a portable external hdd. I used linux, which had detected the drive and was able to recover the contents. Try and see if that helps.

Hi good suggestion. I happen to have an system with Suse on. Just given it a go but nothing on linux. It is like the drive is not even plugged in :(

photorec (on ultimate boot cd) will recover files from a file system

testdisk (on ...... ) will recover partitions

Soldering the connector will fix some physical connectivity problems.

But there are also device failures that could be very costly to have recovered.

Teacher? USB Backup? I'll believe it when I see it!

We had one diligent teacher, who backed up their usb to their userspace.

8 Coppies of 4GB of data did not impress us!

I bet the usb drive is 'the backup' and the only copy ;)

Things to try not already mentioned: using it via a powered hub and try using either a really old usb 1.1 hub or an old PC that only has usb 1.1 on it.

I have a "dead" usb stick here at home but if I pop it in the freezer for at least half an hour I can read it for a while then it dies again.

The regeneration lasted long enough to get all the data from it...

[edit] oops just noticed the date on this...still the freezer story is quite good anyway :)
