David Davies 'Most parents do not want gay children'

Recommended Posts

I think he may be right. I wouldn't want my Daughter to be gay, not because I have anything against gay people, but because if she is, she will have to deal with the widespread prejudice, intolerance and bigotry by the likes of David Davies. No one surely would 'want' that.

[ETA - when she told me she was gay, I said it was fine and I'd support her whatever, well, almost - I might struggle if she told me she was a Conservative.]

I'm of the camp who thinks parents just want their children to be happy, safe, and have good life. What their sexual orientation has to do with it is a mystery to me.

Its not like they choose to be gay, but the goverment is choosing to make life hard for them. Would not suprise me if David Davies was a closet case since he has such an agenda against them.

David Davies attacks plans to allow gay marriage, saying it 'goes against what a lot of people feel very strongly about'

He's right. The whole discussion goes very strongly against my belief that religion is nothing special. Making all this big brouhah about it is giving religion a special place in society and more consideration than I feel it deserves. If people want to marry someone, no matter who they are, why do a segment of society with a belief in an invisible sky giant get to say whether that's ok or not? Why aren't my atheistic views given the same venerated status as religion is?

I should point out that I have no problem with religion, just religious types trying to push their beliefs onto other people. Live and let live, I say.

All of which was my foolishly contentious way of chipping in that DD is an idiot, obv.

EDIT: love this bit near the end

Davies responded to criticism on Monday by tweeting: "Once fought gay boxer. Respect & like. Trained with after bout so not bigoted. Activists calm down – listen to other views."

"LOOK! I'm so open minded I even touched one once! I believe in discriminating against them and blocking their equal rights, but I think they can be alright sorts of fellows, so that's ok, yes?"

Parents who accept their kids remove a massive weight of their shoulders. Thank you for doing so.

This is the reason I wouldn't want my children to be gay. You want them to be happy and have things as easy as possible and being gay is a tough road.

If they were - or indeed are, it won't make one iota of difference to the way I feel about them

Being gay nowadays is much easier than it was way back in the day when I first came out. Bigotry was far worse back then than it is now. Thankfully people are more enlightened now. Yes it can be a bit difficult at times in life but then straight kids have just as hard a time with certain things too. I think overall all our children have times when life is tough and challenging. As a parent I would love my boys whether gay or straight it is what a parent does. We cannot choose their lives for them but we can support them in whatever road they have to walk.

What we have to bear in mind is he is offering his view. Without an understanding of his background and his upbringing I don't feel he can be judged, it may be his experience that most parents he has met do not want gay children for whatever reason, such as the reasons pcstru said.

We have freedom of expression in this country and what he has said may be disliked by others but it is our right to express an opinion, let the voters decide at the next election if he has overstepped his place in politics.

I have no children so can't express an opinion on the topic itself.

I don't think anyone is attacking his right to state his opinion, however odious that opinion might be. One of the fundamentals of free speech and expression is a right of reply.

Came here to say this - I doubt many parents 'want' their children to be gay. I know I certainly wouldn't 'want' my (hypothetical) child to be gay. I'd 'want' them to have a life free of prejudice. If that was guaranteed, even if they were gay I wouldn't 'want' my child to be gay. I wouldn't 'want' them to be straight, because this implies preference of one over the other. I'd accept them for who they were and who they loved.

You, sir, are a wonderful man for accepting your daughters lifestyle (and I make an important note of not using the word 'choice')

He's right in some respects. I mean no parent plans for their child to be gay, most will have an idealist view of marriage, grandkids, traditionalist values etc etc. How they they deal with it is what counts.

I've got 4, love them to bits. Would one of them being gay change that? Definitely not. It doesn't change the bond you have with that child, and as a parent your child's happiness is what matters the most.

I have a friend here who recently tried to tell his parents he thought he was gay (clearly is, but very confused). His parents flat out refused to accept it and demanded he go find a woman and get laid before he makes up his mind. This really disgusted me, like he has a choice!?! \

I love my kids regardless of their views, their sexuality, or the choices/mistakes they make. It is unconditional, in that respect I cannot relate to those that "do not want gay children"....

Maybe the children don't want prejudiced pr**ks for parents....

I have to agree.

I have nothing against some ones sexuality, I do have my own beliefs - same for religion and they will probably never change. I would however never disrespect some one because they believe in something different.

If my kids (touch wood when I have them) turned around and said something with their sexuality or religion (among 100 other things) - it certainly wouldnt bother me but I would worry about them. I have nothing against those who believe in something different though, even those who may not be in favour of gay/religions etc. No point hating those who hate in the 1st place. We do all have a right to our own opinions, its just those who act upon it. As far as im concerned I treat everyone equally unless they personally annoy me (or professionally line up a knife in my back) :)
