Hi all. I'm thinking about changing my broadband supplier and I'm looking to save some money (so I can get Sky). I'm currently with BT and paying around £36 per month with line rental. As I said I'm also looking at getting Sky entertainment and noticed that they do broadband as well and I can combine the two and get 'unlimited' ( I know it's not really unlimited) broadband, Sky entertainment and line rental for around £42.

 

Now my question is does anyone else here do this and is Sky broadband any good? I'm not after blistering performance as I don't do online gaming or lots of downloading but I've heard it's not great BUT it does look cheap :)

I have that exact package and it's fine. We pay about £36 a month normally (good deal on signup worked out better than the half price for 6 months crap) although due to massive delays and having me properly diagnose a line issue for them/BT we actually pay just over 28 a month including everything (sky+ hd with entertainment pack, unlimited broadband (its less limited than other "unlimited" products!), speed and reliability is good. My average gaming ping if that matters (although will vary massively) is 35 to 50 to anywhere in the EU

I have £30 a month Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro. 89mbps down/20 mbps up on an average day. Often download from usenet, watch NFL HD stream and play online game at the same time :)

@cookie_monster I've got Sky Broadband and pay about that same as what you are looking at. Never had any problems with it. Speed has always been good

We switched from dire BT service to Sky. We went the whole hog and switched the phone line rental as well as the Broadband.

 

The transfer was very easy. A patchy 0.75 Meg line became stable 3.5 Meg instantly (standard ADSL is rubbish here) The wifi signal on our router's pretty rubbish and you can't use your own, but we got round that with Devolo homeplug.

 

I'll be upgrading to superfast shortly now we have it available.

 

Oh... and the free wifi from The Cloud is pretty handy too :)

I was just worried that there might be issues with the quality of Sky BB but it sounds ok from what i see here, the service and quality from BT hasn't been anything to write home about though so I can't loose out that badly.

 

The Sky router does have some ethernet ports doesn't it? Any idea if the Sky wireless will have a similar range to the BT Home hub 2?

I use my own router on my Sky Broadband. I just asked them for the username and password via the webchat and they gave it to me. I did tell them that I worked in IT Support and deal with ASDL lines at work, so I did now what I was doing!

Yeah the sky router I got at first had 4 ports. Signal on my sky router wasn't bad but the Belkin I am using instead is better!

 

We moved phone and broadband over to Sky from BT as well. Support from Sky has been great (had problems with harassment calls, they got number changed with no problem).

It should be noted BT Infinity (what Sky uses, as well as others) isn't available in all parts of the UK yet. Virgin Media is more available at the moment, but BT are quickly catching up. If you visit samknows, this gives you a good idea what's available in your area.

I would also make sure that sky has their equipment in your local exchange. If not your speed will drop at peak times, happened to me and I had to move away from them. Was struggling to get 1Mbps after 5pm

I take it the £43 isn't a 12 month offer, is that about the price it will continue to be other than standard price increases?

If you look on the Sam Knows link above it will say if it has equipment in the exchange.

(I see you're probably made your mind up however here's my input)

 

There's a lot of hate for Sky broadband on the Internet but it's been excellent for me so far:

 

- Very easy setup and a painless switch over.

- Free Internet for 12 months (thank you very much!) and then £7.50 there on.

- Broadband speed has doubled from 6 down to 12 down / 1 up. Considering I live in the sticks this is rather pleasing.

- I've been downloading 200gb+ for the last few months (not sure how much others have been downloading but it'll be a lot as well) and no snotty emails / phone calls from Sky.

 

Worth doing especially as my Broadband costs have gone from £35 with Eclipse to £0 :D

My daughter has gone with Sky broadband in her student house. Used samknows first to check for local providers, and then decided on Sky. All three users in the house are wireless on the router supplied by Sky. It's only a terraced house, but the signal and speed has been very good. Don't think any of them are into gaming, but they use catch up TV and no complaints so far.

I was too late for the voucher coded site but managed to get my parents to introduce me so should get £75 M&S voucher :)

 

I'm impressed so far, love the Sky+ HD box and the android Sky+ app, just need to wait a few days for my broadband to be activated. Cheers all :)

And we've taken the plunge for the fibre upgrade. It all gets switched over on December 10th. I can't wait :)

DONT! Sky broaband has given us nothing but problems since we moved over from Tiscali (Now a part of Talk Talk). We constantly get disconnected from the Internet (often or not more than once at night and often several times!), the Internet is slow and the wireless coverage on the Sky router is pants. We are on our second router (both Sagem's) and it's made no difference. We are thinking of dumping them and moving to a rival as we had no problems with Tiscali and we could use our own kit on Tiscali.

Each to their own, and mileages will vary, @JonThompson - for instance, you're moving to Tiscali...

That's enough said for a good many, many people.

 

Actually we went from Tiscali to Sky. Wish we hadnt bothered now.... Oh, and yes hindsight is a wonderful thing...

 

On a second note, I went to set a PC up at a friends house and they have Sky broadband and have the exact same problems as us with it constantly dropping out...
