RichCowell Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Good Morning All! We've recently had a projector fitted in the sports hall here... I'm sure you've already guessed where this is going... When the hall's used in the evenings/weekends, the little toe-rags are obviously booting balls at it as hard as they can to try to move/damage it... We got a secure enclosure for it, and there are guide wires securing it in place, but they're obviously not doing the trick... I'm thinking a cage built around it but not touching it at all would be the obvious solution, but it's at quite a height, so seems a bit of a H&S nightmare... If you've got a projector in your sports hall, or are aware of other more suitable/effective methods of ensuring it's not moved... Rick
Millgate Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Morning Rick, Exactly like you said, we would install a protective cage around the projector so that the little "darlings" couldn't damage it as easy (they'll have to be more creative). Regarding the H&S, you're right. Depending on the height, we'd probably use scaffolding or a mobile crane. Let me know if you need any quotes Luke

Guest Guest Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 A cage will stop damage but it won't stop it moving. I'm guessing it will be on a fairly long pole? The longer the pole the more the projector will move with on 1 degree of movement.
familiarrealms Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Seems odd that the company you used didn't offer you a security cage as an option, it would be logical to offer that for a sports hall. With regards to H+S, if a company has the correct credentials, training and equipment it should not be an issue.

I'm talking about a separate (probably wire) cage with a space between that and the projector... I know what I mean, I'm just not describing it very well lol...

Based on what you have what about using wire strops, I'm talking like sailing yacht mast type here so that it is help in position and cant be moved. Surely a very short throw projector would of been better.

Marc-Engineer Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 There are a number of options, you can use and Ultra Close Focus Hitachi (it fastens to the wall above screen or whiteboard) and with a cage on those they are quite tough, or a tile mount if you have a ceiling void it lowers the projector for use then hides it behind a tile when not in use in the ceiling protecting it from target practice. Oaktech Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 I've done this, we fixed the projector on a 50cm unicol pole on an I beam clamp, and then using I beam clamps we had a cage created out of 1" steel mesh attached to the I beam with beam clamps with a hole cut for the lens and filled with plexi-glass the cage had an all round clearance of 30cm to ensure any shock was not transmitted to the projector. If I can find some pictures I'll post them.

squeeky Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Personally I would build a plyboard frame around the projector with fans built in to the back. Then I would give it a plexiglass front cover and then the projector is completely encased if you get the glass correct it shouldnt make a difference to the picture

A good thought, and they do look pretty impressive... sadly there's no room above the ceiling, it's just the roof... also it's too low down so the lift would have to be massive lol... there's no such thing as a bad idea though! :-p
Willott Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Would cutting a hole in the roof count as a bad idea another random suggestion, could you hinge at the top of the pole and have wire attached to winch the projector so it stows at roof level (make it more difficult to hit), then winch back down when needed for use? May be able to keep it from being hit as much, and as the only movement would be in a single direction to fixed points, should be fairly consistent?

RTFM Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 We had a similar conundrum when we decided to put up something in our youth centre which is used outside of school hours by youth services for basketball, football etc. We ended up doing this; Plasma enclosure | Digital Signage protection for Outdoor or Harsh Environments | Armagard Ltd. with a 60" TV in it (thanks @Millgate for the install and supply ) Works a treat Doesnt help you so sorry for that, might be an alternative solution for someone else looking into a projector solution in an area which is used for sport etc.
