I was primarily wondering about parking, which looks pretty good and, of course, getting back up respective m'ways in the afternoon. It can't be as bad (famous last words) as when I was driving from Harpenden to Sidcup/Foot's Cray every day. Can it? In a word.. YES The M1 and M25 on a Friday evening... YUK!

M25 then A12 goes all the way, but again can be a pig. I'd rather cut through Barking/East Ham before joining either A13 or A12 to be honest. Parking, god knows. Never ever tried that far in. Always stopped at Romford or, at a push, Barking. Is it in or out of the congestion zone?
mats Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Depends were you are coming from. I like to drive to Romford and park up at the multistory there. All zone rail pass does the rest (Main line to Stratford, DLR to the Airport). This time I'm being brave and driving through Romford/Barking and up to the Blackwall tunnel into Woolwich. But then I'll be doing it after work on the Friday so hopefully traffic won't be so bad by the time I get there, and I have all day Sunday to get back... EDIT: [qoute] it'll be a train to St Panc and then either a Boris bike or my own folding bike to the venue Not a bad idea. Park up in Barking and cycle up through East Ham and Canning Town, it's a nice ride have done it a couple of times. Not sure about leaving my own bike chained up for several hours in central London though... From Travel By Foot ----------- ExCeL London has 60 cycle racks in total. 6 cycle racks are located at the West entrance taxi drop off point just underneath the DLR walkway. 54 cycle racks are located next to the East Entrance underneath the stairway connecting Level 0 to Level 1. There is no charge to use the cycle racks. ----------- No mention of weather or not the racks are in any protected from light fingered lowlife. Bring the biggest lock you've got - and the all others...
Earthling Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I rarely had any trouble with the M25 on a Friday, used to join it at the Dartford Tunnel (south to north) and seemed to miss all of the really bad jams. From the north side of the crossing, the only problem would be if if I got stuck behind an accident. Yeah, the M1 can be pretty bad round Jcn 8, but I won't use it to get home. See how I feel on the day, I suppose. I hate public transport, which all stems from the days when I was catching the train from Harpenden to Sidcup/Foot's Cray every day, which I gave up in order to drive there and back every day.

My colleague suggested the M25/A12, but that's a quarter way round the whole M25, which seems a bit like going round the sun to meet the moon, as my Nan used to say. 2000+ parking spaces at the Excel itself. I was thinking, get there early enough, park up, then find somewhere for breakfast. I guess a phone call to ask if the exhibitors have taken all the parking spaces will probably decide it.

Just looked up the advance engineering work calendar... 2-3 Feb: DLR - No service between Canning Town and Beckton. This means there will be no direct trains to Custom House/Prince Regent for the ExCeL Centre at the weekend! Alternatives will be Rail Replacement buses from Canning Town (it's a short ride) or if you feel adventurous and for a little extra cost, take the Emirates Cable Car from North Greenwich to Royal Victoria Docks as it is a very short walk and connected to the Jubilee Line. Even Olympia had trains and a semi-frequent service when we were in the centre compared to other events when it seems to be 1 train a week (maybe a slight over exaggeration....) Maybe the EduGeek staff could use Boris Bikes to get from the Hotel to the ExCeL centre I know @Dos_Box cycles to work so maybe it could be arranged Have to now re-plan the journey info I have given my team on how to find it from Euston on the Saturday visit as all my team is coming down this year on Saturday (they must be missing me now after 3 years of BETT stand working)

Ironically I had told them to do Northern Line to Bank and then find a DLR to Custom House for ExCeL so they still need to just get to Canning Town instead and have a wander

I'm trying to import the dates of BETT from the site and all I get is: Cannot import vCalendar file This error can appear if you have attempted to save a recurring Lunar appointment in iCalendar format. To avoid this error, set the appointment option to Gregorian instead of Lunar. More information about this error message online. Has anyone done this?

Get to Canning Town station (jubilee line) and then change to the DLR to West Silvertown. It's a good 20-25 minutes walk from Canning Town station (I did it several times during the Olympics) and only 10-15 minutes walk from West Silvertown using the footbridge over the dock. Alternatively go to North Greenwich by the O2. Walk to the Emirates airline and get the cable car over the river. ExCeL is about 5 minutes walk from the other end. The Emirates Airline is not included in a travelcard fare, but you can get a discounted fare if you show your travelcard. You can also use an Oyster card for the Airline. 3

tomgrindle Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 As it seems alot of you have experience of London, at least a lot more than me anyway, was wondering if I could as some advice? I now have a hotel booked for me and my friend, were staying at the Travelodge in the Docklands, which is only a short walk to Canning Town Station. So was going to walk from the hotel to the ExCel. My question that I need to ask is how to get from City to the Docklands and vice-versa, as whilst I am here I want to do some site seeing etc, but also I am either catching the Train to Paddington or the Bus to Victoria. As I have heard about some maintenance work etc I don't want to get confused. Cheers Tom
