Hello everyone

 

I've registered to use this site at last.

 

I've taught in maintained and indpendent sectors, been a network manager in a couple of schools, now I'm helping to run a business and I've written a few articles for magazines aimed at the independent school sector. In my spare time, when I'm not herding either a cat or a teenager, I knit, crochet and garden. At the last BETT, I had a brief chat to Vikpaw but didn't meet the rest of the team.

 

Yay, somebody remembers me. I hope i was able to answer your questions, be informative, intelligent and debonair.

 

I must apologise i don't remember you specifically, it's hard to without a face / name, and even then i'm usually not good with names.

I'm new to the site. It was recommended to me by one of my schools and seems to be going well so far but thought i'd introduce myself and the company on here too.

Hi, I'm Graham and I'm a public sector procurement specialist, employed within a large company providing goods & services to a number of local authorities.

One of my main roles is providing advice & guidance to educational establishments with regard to hardware & software requirements. Most of the schools & colleges that I deal with either fall under the local authorities that we support, or have a managed service agreement with the company that I work for.

I won't disclose the company that I work for, simply because I am not here to advertise them or sell anybody anything. I am however, quite happy to share with users my experiences good & bad of products that I have come across in my day to day work and share the feedback that I receive from schools that I deal with regarding products that they have purchased through me.

I am also happy to share prices with users on the forum, purely to help them with comparing market pricing with the pricing that I am able to secure. I am happy to share details of suppliers that I have either dealt with or deal with on a day to day basis and happy to put people in touch with them if they feel that they are getting a raw deal with their current supplier. I will not emblazon any suppliers details all over the forum, but will quite happily PM any users with a contact name, number & email address to put them in touch with trusted contacts.

So whats in it for me?

The opinions of users on this site with regard to products that I am not as familiar with gives me some insight into any pitfalls that I should be looking for if one of the schools that we look after were to ask for said goods. I get first hand experiences from people at the coalface who are using these products on a day to day basis & in turn can share their experiences with my customers.

Hi all,

 

I've just inherited the ICT post at a third level school in Dublin. I'm an engineer and teacher but this is my first time as the network manager. We are currently running netware and windows 2000 and I am spending the summer setting up server 2K8r2 and win 7, should be fun.

 

Everything is going well so far, printers deployed, gpo's working, print manager in place, wds deploying and sophos protecting the place.

The only thing I am struggling with is a dhcp/dns/nat/nic type issue that's preventing Internet access. I won't get into it here, but it's doing my head in at the mo!

 

I stumbled across this site randomly and I'm very happy to have found it, looks like a great community!

OK sanity in all of us is questionable! However the eduhobnob is the standard stress management tool on here! Fortunately we have a limitless supply!

Hello to you all, im 18 years of age currently working in a high school as a junior technician on an apprenticeship that ive been attending for 5 weeks running now, I have little experience and im coming here in the hope that I can learn alot, in which area of ICT? No idea, but would like to grasp some knowledge in all areas so i can choose to expertise in one in the most preferred, where shall I start?

New user here:) When I was in College I volunteered at a School on my day off, from March last year, and carried on when I started Uni in October. In January this year I was employed to cover for the IT Technician while he was on long-term sick leave and then for 2 months I was also covering for the Network Manager at the same time, as the old one left and the School took ages to hire someone new. I am still covering for the IT Technician until the Summer Holidays. All that and I have just finished my first year of Uni!
