Mandatory Profiles creation problem

We have followed, to the letter, the EduGeek Wiki for creating mandatory profiles... however...

 

the profile works ok for the one user we used to create the profile in the first place but, for all other users, our redirected Start Menu and Desktop does not appear and they are left with an Admin desktop and Start Menu.

 

The Desktop and Start Menu folders in the created mandatory profile are empty so we do not know where the items appearing on the Desktop and Start Menu are coming from.

 

Any suggestions would be very useful.

they maybe coming from the all users folder in user documents.

as FN said i would guess that they are populating from the all users setting.

 

When you was creating the Man profile did you have the start menu and desktop already redirected from GPO?

Yup... we started off as if it was a new user with redirected desktop and start menu then altered the various program settings accordingly.

have you checked the permissions on the share where the start menu and the desktop are located? so that you student user has access to the share.

 

Is this being done via a share and using the full UNC path for the location

We are swapping from roaming profiles to a mandatory profile. We've always had the redirected desktop and start menu and it has always worked.

It works fine under roaming profiles but not under mandatory.

It was all to do with the permissions when you "Copy To..." - sorted now.

Could u be a little more specific in your explanation of your solution for your mandatoy profiles issue? I am trying the same thing and I would like to know exactly how you solved it.

He is on about the GUI you use when you do Right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced User Profile Settings. The copy to button allows you to assign permissions.

We made sure that the permissions in the "Copy To..." command were for Everyone

Hi, I have created a mandatory profile following the wiki.

 

I changed the desktop background to plain blue. When logging on as a user, with the profile set to this newly created profile that has been copied to the server, I get the clouds and hills background.

 

Has anyone got any ideas what is wrong? Could it be something to do with desktop redirection perhaps?

tazz, I have found that the wallpaper is never usually saved when creating mandatory profiles from my experience, what you could do is create a bitmap of the plain blue background and copy it to the server, then in Group Policy under User Configuration>Desktop turn on Active Desktop and then use the Active Desktop Wallpaper setting in the same folder and put in the full UNC path of the plain blue wallpaper and it will be set, make sure the user has read permissions on the folder the share with the wallpaper.

You will end up with that horrible blue around icon labels on the desktop but it will enforce your chosen walppaper and prevent if from being changed

To get the same colour as the blue back drop, I took a screengrab of the desk top and cropped it so it just showed the blue colour. You can resise the image to whatever your desktops are using. This prevents the "blue box" around the icon labels as it is all from the windows settings (Saved me trying to find out the exact blue colour)

 

I have also addes the year groups to the top right hand corner so staff can identify the correct years are logged on. (In the case of pupils staying logged on after leaving the lessons and a differnt group coming in.)
