Synology makes Baby Jesus cry...

Our luxembourg office has a 2bay one (bought without our knowledge I'd like to add), which regularly breaks raid. or just decides their no more room. or starts overwriting existing partitions.

...I'm not a fan.

What's the price like on the 879U-RP? Last time I spoke to QNAP (well, the UK distributor) they implied that the 879 was the replacement for the 859, and performance was significantly improved due to the i3 on it.

I wouldn't say performance on mine is bad, but it's not great. I was originally backing up to it over CIFS and it kept dropping out, SMB errors, etc. I spoke to support and they said do any heavy work over iSCSI, which I'm now doing and it's been okay. Network performance has never been brilliant, but I'm not sure if that's the QNAP, the network, or the device on the other end. Having said that, I'm currently replicating between two QNAPs over what should be a 1Gb link and I'm getting 42Mbps which is pathetic.

Like I said, performance isn't great, but I don't know of anything much better in the price range. A Server 2012 box with SMB3.0 clients (i.e. Windows 8) could probably beat it at the same price.

Chris

Thanks for the info. The quote I have for the 879 is 'only' £500 more than the 859 so I'm thinking that could be a better option (and possible allow me a bit more flexibility as to what I do with it)

If you dont mind me asking - How much did you end up paying for the fully loaded unit?

An 859 with 8x 2TB should be around the £2,000 mark. Prices might have gone up a bit still due to the Thailand flooding.

That replication I'm doing still hasn't finished - I'd say go to the 879 if you can afford it. :)

I went for the 879 in the end...it should arrive today so will post back when I've used it a bit!

Any update on this did it arrive and is it ok?

I have been offered a 24tb TS-879U-RP for around £450 less than a 24tb TS-1279U-RP.....

If using it for a DPM storage pool would you run RAID 5 or 6 though?

RAID 5 7x3=21tb vs 11x2 = 22tb

RAID 6 6x3=18tb vs 10x2 = 20tb

1. Depends how mission critical the data was that was going to be stored on said device?

2. Will backups be made of said data on said device to tape or some other storage medium ?

3. How many drives you were using in said device, if quite a lot then raid 6 ( thus 2 disk redundancy ) but if you were doing backups and weren't concerned about losing data or re building the raid then raid 5 ??

Not done much with raid but for the sake of a couple of Tb's surely RAID 6 would be worth it, that way if 2 drives went at once you would still be ok.

The device is intended to backup a production SAN using DPM.

There will also be a DR copy of the source SAN data, either by replicating the NAS, or via a 2nd DPM server to another NAS, or offloading to tape depending upon funds/finding a home for a replica NAS.

The 879U will be maxed out with 8 drives, the 1279U will be maxed out with 12 drives.

My instincts agree with mac_shinobi & say go for the 12-drive device & run RAID 6.....

Regarding the hard drives for the RAID array, you may want to consider getting Western Digital's new Red drives since they are specifically designed for NASs and 24/7 operation (unlike most of their other drives). StorageReview have a review of the 3TB model here.

Says 2.5 TB Caviar Green, what?

Yeah. Wrong description, correct part number. :)
