LukeC Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Can anyone recommend a Rack mounted 12TB NAS thats supports ISCSi and Raid 5, it will be used for backups (VHDs) general storage, software install files, and will store images for FOG on it via iscsi. Im looking below £2K thanks.
Domino Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 We've always found the qnap devices to be great: QNAP - Products - Products - Storage - SMB - 8-Bay - TS-809U-RP

Im looking below £2K thanks. QNAP springs to mind. You can get a QNAP TS-859U-RP+ for a little over £1,200 with 8x 2TB disks. In RAID 5 with a hot-spare that'll give you 11TB usable. They're not the most blindingly-fast things, but they're muti-protocol (CIFS, NFS, iSCSI) and have domain support. EDIT: Domino beat me to it! Chris 1
jamesfed Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 +1 for QNAP from me as well, we've got one of the 2 bays at a Primary for their backups and I've got another of the 4 bays at home for iSCSI/few other fun things. Firmware and web GUI are always very good and well worth the money.
mac_shinobi Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Not sure in regards to price but they do a few 6Gbps models QNAP TS-EC879U-RP QNAP TS-879U-RP Not sure if having 6gbps SATA or the likes is something you would be after. Depends how much of a performance boost you would gain if any ?
twin--turbo Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 We bought a Buffalo Terrastation a few months ago, it's crap.
LukeC Posted June 26, 2012 Author Posted June 26, 2012 I have used netgear ones in the past, do you know how the Qnaps compare?
mac_shinobi Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Just wondering if it would be worth while getting @Millgate to quote you ? 1
Domino Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 I have used netgear ones in the past, do you know how the Qnaps compare? I had a 2 bay netgear one a few years back and it was an absolute dog. the qnaps are fully standards compliant, easier to configure/manage and have a massive feature set. Of course I can't speak for newer or higher spec netgears, just my experience. 1

Im looking below £2K thanks. I generally go with Thecus for the Dual DOM and redundant power supply. The 1U4600R or 1U4200XXXR would give you 12TB raw if fitted with 3TB drives. You should be able to do that for well under £2K.
m25man Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 The 12 Bay ReadyNAS units are excellent built on Supermicro Chassis with Infrant developed software and Enterprise RE3/4 HDDS but these cost around £5k I have never used QNAP myself but judging from the spec and the feedback here and elsewhere they certainly look to give good value for the money. I would only suggest that you stick to using decent Enterprise Quality Raid Edition SATA drives rather than consumer ones in an appliance that might be hosting valuable data. 1
andyturpie Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 I use QNAP my self, ableit a small 4 bay with 4x2tb drives on RAID 5. Its been excellent
localzuk Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Big fan of QNAP here too. A breeze to set up and run.
chazzy2501 Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 you could get a drobo 800i for that money, not raid 5 but easier with a virtual hotspare and single or dual redundancy. Also easier to add more storage later. Rackmount kit cost extra though. I've not used an 800i, I have the drobov2 and its really easy to use.
sidewinder Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 You can get a QNAP TS-859U-RP+ for a little over £1,200 with 8x 2TB disks Where are you getting prices like that? Or do you mean £1,200 + the cost of the disks? The quotes I have had are over £2k
Duke Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Where are you getting prices like that? Or do you mean £1,200 + the cost of the disks? The quotes I have had are over £2k Sorry, I've screwed up. I forgot I had a price with disks and a price without disks and gave you the without disks price - apologies! £1,250 without disks, £1,980 with disks. Sorry about that, Chris
glennda Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I would just get a Large Chassis Server and custom build one. I made a 32TB machine for 4.5k
Duke Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I would just get a Large Chassis Server and custom build one. I made a 32TB machine for 4.5k Must admit we tried that route. SuperMicro chassis, small Intel board, LSI RAID card, etc. The LSI card didn't work as advertised (no option to select RAID 5 or 6, even though they were listed as supported in the product spec) and LSI support were a nightmare to deal with. In the end they agreed to accept an RMA on the card but wouldn't replace it with a working model, time was running out to get the project working, so we just went the QNAP route. They're easy to set up, fairly reliable, and you get a product warranty rather than an individual component warranty which can save some hassle. If anyone wants the SuperMicro chassis it's a SUPERMICRO 2U REDUNDANT PSU 720W ENCLOSURE 8 BAYS CSE-825TQ-R720LPB and I'd gladly sell it cheap. Chris
glennda Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I got an HBA card and used a linux Software raid in raid 5 with two volumes in a LVM. It was based on the 4U 36 bay Supermicro Chassis. This is what i got Western Digital REII-GP 2TB 3.5 SATA Internal Hard Drive x 16 RAID CARD - Intel RAID Controller SASUC8I HBA (for server/board below) INTEL Quad Core Xeon E5520 2.26GHz LGA1366 Super Micro SuperChassis 847E1-R1400LPB (huge for future expansion) Super Micro X8DTH-IF Supermicro 8GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module 2 x 250gb HDD's for OS. 1

sidewinder Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Also, @Duke how do you find performance? It worries me it only has an Atom CPU. I'm only going to be using it for backups and other long term storage mind. But I'm just wondering whether I should get a quote for an 809 instead which has a Core 2 Duo, it just seems like its quite old now though

But I'm just wondering whether I should get a quote for an 809 instead which has a Core 2 Duo, it just seems like its quite old now though What's the price like on the 879U-RP? Last time I spoke to QNAP (well, the UK distributor) they implied that the 879 was the replacement for the 859, and performance was significantly improved due to the i3 on it. I wouldn't say performance on mine is bad, but it's not great. I was originally backing up to it over CIFS and it kept dropping out, SMB errors, etc. I spoke to support and they said do any heavy work over iSCSI, which I'm now doing and it's been okay. Network performance has never been brilliant, but I'm not sure if that's the QNAP, the network, or the device on the other end. Having said that, I'm currently replicating between two QNAPs over what should be a 1Gb link and I'm getting 42Mbps which is pathetic. Like I said, performance isn't great, but I don't know of anything much better in the price range. A Server 2012 box with SMB3.0 clients (i.e. Windows 8) could probably beat it at the same price. Chris
Duke Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Urgh, replication is definitely CPU-limited. Bad times: http://www.hardenhuish.wilts.sch.uk/avatar/qnap_cpu_replication.png
LukeC Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 Thanks guys i purchased the qnap 16TB as suggested, just awaiting its delivery.
