MUST be reliable Needs to be able to invoice us Unlimited traffic - obviously fairusage applies but as unlimited as possible Linux/mysql/php Dont need any fancy web interface, just phpmyadmin or equivelant Decent HD space - 5-10gb probably Any recommendations? What are Fasthosts like?

Someone previously said they'd had issues with them but so far with the setup process for the hosting they have been fine. We've not got the site live yet as I've only just as of yesterday had the tag on the domain changed so that streamline can make the changes required. Ben

No problems since January when it went live. If your school is a registered charity you get 50% discount. £30 odd for 2 years unlimited space and unrestricted bandwidth. As for speed - check it out if you like - http://www.talbotheath.info (Still a work in progress!)

I had problems and a friend had problems (which were only solved with solicitor involvement). I'm just very, very dubious about the quality of their service after inspecting things like the load on the mysql server we were on.

In order for us to continue to use the rm easymail provided by the LEA I needed streamline to make some dns zone changes for mx and cname. The response I got from them was: "Unfortunately we are unable to update MX or CNAME records on our hosting packages, this is not a service we support," Looks like I'll be looking for a new webhost and moving again. FFS!!!! Ben

Such a change would be a piece of cake to apply so it indicates they'd be no good if the site was hacked... For what it's worth I'd have a chat with flump.net and see if they can offer you something... If you ask for Craig and tell them Martin (WebSnail) sent you you might get a good deal or at least a realistic one. £30 for 2 years is not a sustainable profit model for any host... As Si said, you get what you pay for..

As Si said, you get what you pay for.. I think the 2 are linked. They don't do custom changes because it would not be profitable.

ICT_GUY Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 We use netpivotal. At around £50 per year, 2 gigs of space, 5 sql databases, 80gigs bandwidth, free .co.uk domain name, php and lots of other stuff. Very reliable, we are now in our second year. Only two minor snags, 1 you have to pay by credit card. 2 the online tools are blocked by our county firewall, so sql configs need to be done at home. ICT_GUY Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Good luck, I tried for a couple of weeks, in the end it was easier (and a hell of a lot cheaper) to use the ICT co-ordinators credit card and claim the money back. None of the biggies were interested.

I've been using them for about 5 years now... I host about 15 domains/sites with them... definitely worth checking out... the only catch may be that invoicing/PO thing - most of these places all accept credit cards. Their yearly hosting fee for unlimited traffic and lots of storage space is pretty cheap.

You can use the discount "Edugeek" to obtain a 10% discount off prices, we obviously allow DNS Changes and MX Record Changes. You get the cPanel interface and you can have as many MySQL databases as you would like. You are Guarnteed 99.99% uptime although servers haven't crashed for 3 months straight, currently at 100% uptime, and we can invoice you. PM me if interested

Why don't (like the grammer) you all who need it, put a bit of monies together and purchase a server and then you can section it of , IP, all that jaz and host all your web sites etc on this server, you can then have any setup / configuration and control of your won bit. Dont all throw paper at me, just a suggestion like.

Craig's someone I've known since he started out... I've recommend people take a look but good to get a more current opinion Oh and as to "host your own"... I do that and I can't stress enough, DO NOT GO THERE!... It's a nightmare unless you get it managed and that costs a lot of money. The only people I'd ever recommend handle a full root style VPS or any other server are people who want to learn, have already learned more than enough AND have a lot of time to kill...

Its fun.... *goes to check the server uptime* System Uptime 147 Days, 15 Hours and 0 Minutes basically, since I set it up this year. Not bad, and zero restarts :D Would have gone down the VPS side of things, but for the money vs power etc., it wasnt worth it. Needless to say this tho, but not anyone can run a managed server - so be very careful in trying before thinking. too. BTW thats in a personal sense... not for the school itself - we have county provided webspace for that Oooops.... g2g.... food just dont cook itself either *doh!* Regards Nath

I said my options are; Payed for commercial hosting - negative is we have no control over reliability and service other than paying top dollar and still hoping we chose the right one. My own server on a DMZ managed by myself - this would upset a few in the LEA for "security issues" and it would be doubtful anyone taking over from me could manage it. A server managed by the RBC/ISP/LEA - this could be payed for out of current funds or by a few schools chipping in together The last 2 options are what I want but i cant see it happening in a hurry. But the reason we have our own regional/national network is to do things like this. And it isnt like im asking for something which costs a fortune or is hard to set up.

Norphy Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 We used Easyspace at my last place. Reliability is good, speed reasonable and you get full control over DNS records, you can add your own CNAMES, As and MXs at will. They're not especially cheap but they worked well for us.

Excellent service, and im sure if you email the guy (colin I think his name is) they will be more than happy to invoice you. Also if the 4 main packages aren't quite right, again email Colin and he will tailor a package at a fair price I don't have any connection with them btw other than I host all my sites with them
