Netbook with Upgradable Ram

Hi

 

Does anyone know a decent netbook for schools that have upgradable RAM to 2GB.

 

Most that I've looked at - the HP Mini, Acer Aspire One can only take 1Gb

What sort of budget? There are a large number out now which can take 4GB+, but prices vary.

you might find the 1gb is iirc a restriction on windows 7 starter rather than the laptop itself. Tosh nb250/500's take 2gb no problems

For £350 - £400, you can get a decent laptop. Why netbook?

As mentioned in a previous post some time ago, original Intel Atom netbooks supported upto 2GB of memory, but now newer netbooks support upto 4GB of memory. Best thing is to check the advanced specs for further details.

its for a libray. we are getting 6 static computers then 4 netbooks that the pupils can use round a study table. The teachers were not too keen on laptops.

We bought some HP Mini 110s last year which I upgraded to 2GB RAM and Win 7 pro and we've had no problems with them. They were about £220 including the RAM upgrade and Win 7 Pro licence.

 

We've just bought a set of 20 Samsung NC110s with the same upgrades and this year they were £190 per unit. They also have the later Atom processor (N570) and they're noticeably faster.

 

None of the the Netbooks will be as powerful as a laptop, but they work really well with our infant age kids and the performance is more than adequate for internet, office and primary education software. They can also easily get 6 round a table which is more important in our setting than the processing power.

Agreed - that is a whole lot of money for a netbook. If you are wanting at least 4GB RAM I take it you are putting a fair bit on them? In which case, I would always recommend a laptop. May be a 14" one, then you will have best of both worlds - the new Toshiba Satellite Pro L850-11R. Nice spec and a good price.

Or you could look at the Tosh L730-120 - it has a 13" screen, so closer to a netbook? But it still comes with 2GB RAM, an i3 processor. Add in an extra 2GB RAM and a warranty and you'll still be below £400.

Samsung netbooks are upgradeable - I have just bought another 32 - I have 45 all ready and in fact the company I bought them from is going to install the extra RAM without charging me for the install, just the cost of the RAM!

I'm with Witch, we bought 80 Samsung N150 netbooks which came bundled with 1gb, stuck in 2gb ourselves during the imaging. Nice little laptops and cant say I've had many problems with them.

I've upgraded my own Acer Aspire One to 4GB of RAM, the most it will physically take - the manufacturers specification sheet and Crucial's RAM selection tool all think the limit is 2GB, but it will actually take 4GB. Fitting it is a somewhat alarming procedure involving prizing the keyboard and most of the casing off - you're best off watching the YouTube video that shows how to do it properly. For school, we've just bought 40 rather natty Lenovo's - small, but perfectly capable.

I've not heard of that one before - I run starter on all mine (as not on domain) and would like to know its not true in case I ever do a RAM upgrade

Windows 7 Starter is limited to 2GB RAM, not 1GB.

I've got a PB DotM/A its a netbook that comes with 2Gig as standard. Nice

We have 300 Toshiba netbooks against our advice and they are hated by staff and pupils.

 

 

For a private client i specked up Asus Eee 1215N's which are small but have a very good screen. They have gone down very well. They wanted Netbooks but my experiences of them managed to steer them to a crossover device that would actualy do the job.
