Camping Lantern - which one?

Right, so I'm going camping a couple of times soon and want a decent lantern that lasts and lights up an area nicely - would also use it for bbq's etc.

 

Argos do an LED jobb for £37 which has many impressive reviews so I'm tempted by this, charging could be the issue on this one though.

 

Also considering the gas option...

 

How much are gas bottles nowadays and are these lamps easy to use/replace gas etc? (I've not used one since I was about 11)

Go for a gas one. There's nothing quite as nice as a gas lantern. The gas lasts for ages, but the mantle (sp?) is very fragile. Even an hard stare can destroy it.

The gas canisters screw on/off to the lamp base.

Just buy a bunch of mantles (about £1 each) and you're all good.

 

The light from a friend's gas lamp was far superior to my cold, heartless LED.

The LED ones are good to mark dangers and paths but not great from lighting up say an eating area. As jinn says it is a very blue light so makes every thing look a bit weird. Coleman gas lamps are brill, you can get multi-fuel ones that take anything from meths, paraffin to petrol! They give a great light and can last most the night on a single tank. They do take a bit of maintaining, even more if like a friend you use it to cook cheese toasties on the top! Do not use them in tents though and probably not good round small children.

Agreed, gas or multifuel. I have an LED light which is great for the odd bit of "oh i can't quite see that" for 5 minutes but gas is a lot nicer :-)

Gas are great, except if you want to use it in your tent and you have a small tent, then it's gets a bit dodgy. If you do go gas, make sure you get a CO monitor for your tent, even if you have no intention of using the gas lamp in your tent because you will do at some point.

If you are camping surely you are trying to get away from electrical technology (well other than a wind up radio maybe…)

All the same I would always go with gas if you need light for any decent amount of time – a 250/500 canister lasts for a very long time and gives a much more ‘homely light’.

I have a chargeable 30 odd led from Argos, it holds charge so well if I have used it for two years without charging it

I hear the Hozuki Lantern is nice for camping and such for using in your tent and the likes. I believe it's also good for lighting up tables and the likes.

I have one of the Argos 30 LED ones and it's brilliant. I did put a piece of lighting gel in it to warm the colour (lee 223 or 206 I think).
