Arthur Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 (edited) If you have been looking to buy an SSD recently, you may have noticed Crucial's M4 SSDs have been dropping in price like a rock (as you can see from the links below). I think the price war between Intel, Crucial, Kingston and OCZ is probably the reason. 128GB: £95.11 (£79.26 ex. VAT) 256GB: £176.03 (£146.69 ex. VAT) 512GB: £404.99 (£337.49 ex. VAT) Major SSD firms have initiated price reductions to reflect falling prices for NAND flash chips. The move is also aimed at triggering a price war in the market in an attempt to squeeze out smaller peers, according to industry sources in Taiwan. A number of channel retailers, which usually sell commodity memory products including flash drives and memory cards, recently began to offer SSDs, the sources observed. Some of the leading SSD producers are concerned about inferior products that might disrupt development of the market, and therefore have resorted to price-cutting measures to force the retailers to leave the market, the sources indicated. Kingston Technology, Intel, OCZ and Crucial are identified as the ones lowering SSD prices. In addition, SSD vendors hope to speed up the industry transition from SATA2 to SATA3 by narrowing the price gap between the two product segments, the sources noted. Prices for SATA3 SSDs are now only NT$300 (US$10) higher than those for SATA2 ones, the sources said. The availability of SATA3 has been identified as a new demand driver for SSDs in 2012. You have to use the APRIL25 code at the checkout to get £25 off though. http://i.imgur.com/3oplB.png Another option would be to get 2 x 256GB SSDs for £352.06 from eBuyer. The next cheapest 512GB SSD is probably the Samsung 830 at £445.82 inc. VAT (after using the same code above and claiming cashback). It's worth mentioning that the 830 has issues with certain SATA controllers and higher power consumption, so the M4 is probably the better choice out of the two.
localzuk Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 So, the price isn't really £404.98 then, there is just a voucher that can be used. 2 drives wouldn't suit me sadly, as I want it for my Steam drive, and I've got 260GB of games now - and RAID 0 is insanity... Think I may just stick to a hybrid drive for it.

Think I may just stick to a hybrid drive for it. I have a 120gb as my system drive and use a app that transfers my main steam games I play from my storage drive to the ssd. Would work just as well for splitting up your data across 2 ssd drives or more.

I don't need them stored on my machine, but i do need fast bootin'
3s-gtech Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Both of my work machines now have M4s in, as does our home Dell Inspiron 6400 - even with an ancient SATA1 Core2Duo laptop, the speed difference with Windows 7 thrown in is immense. Can't recommend them enough. My home games machine is the only one without, and it's painful!
mavhc Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 Just bought a Samsung 256GB SSD 830 from overclockers for 163.55 inc postage. Then spent 5 hours trying win8 on it (still sucks on multiple monitors), and then trying to set it up for intel smart response without reinstalling, which worked eventually, after I found out that my computer can fail to boot from hdd, but boot from ssd fine, if a specific UFD is connected.
