Hello all,

 

It's that time of year again and my road tax needs re-newing. Is it just me though, or are the Government and DVLA really starting to take the mick? And why is it, two years in a row, my tax disc reminder in the post states one price for 6 and 12 months, yet the online price is £5 more? Robbing so and so's...

Is it more expensive online? I love not having to go to the Post Office, especially with the school minibus renewal as our insurance is only a letter from the LEA saying it's insured. It used to take half an hour and a phone call to the DVLA before they would accept it!

No - I just think the Government make these last minute price rises in line with the new 2012/13 financial year. They did it last year too.

 

I do it online as I can't be bothered to go to the Post Office. Lazy but true!

Same happened to me last year - did the price go up as part of the recent budget? Theres small print on the paper copy saying something like prices are correct at time of print and are subject to change blah blah blah

I also pay for mine Online because it is just so much easier than having to take all documents to post office and walking to one.

Eurgh, don't talk to me about the cost of motoring generally! Several years ago I was more-or-less offered a job involving a significant motorway commute. My car was old and unreliable so I bought a Vauxhall Vectra (known at the time as a great 'commuting' car). When I heard nothing back about the job and subsequently chased it, I found that they'd decided not to recruit after all and not bothered to tell me.

 

Long story short, several years on I have a Y reg Vectra I can't afford to replace that costs me £270 a year in Road tax and when my insurance renewal came through they want £825 to insure me!!!! I have over 9 years of no claims bonus, I'm 29 years old and have never (touch wood) so far had a motoring conviction or accident or claim of any kind!!! The insurance is more than the car is worth!!!

 

The whole thing is daylight robbery but they have you over a barrel, and if, like me, you can't afford to replace the car it's even worse. What I'd save in tax I'd MORE than spend in the payments on the car and the additional cost of insurance so it's not even worth it!

Not really, Apple are the scourge of companies with no intention other than filling their pockets with some substandard products at premium prices. They do have some decent products at not outrageous prices. They have fingers in more patents^H^H^H^H^H^H^H pies than most people ever could.

 

DVLA exist only to manage what they manage. And they manage to cock it all up.

Just wait, one day you'll replace the tyres and received a letter telling you that technically its not the same car you originally taxed so need to re-licence re-tax your car.

My insurance is due at the end of this month and quite frankly I feel sick.

 

I was with Admiral and they were fleecing my wallet with about £100 a month ( one car ) with me and my O/H on it. Paying to move to Octogan ( costing us £200 up front to move plus one month ) and will be £59 a month after that for both of us on our car fully comp with all the cover inc lost keys / fobs / etc etc

Personally I love the fact that diesel-wise the tax keeps dropping, but is being added at the pump......petrol-wise they make the tax higher and then the petrol slightly cheaper.

 

Is it just me?? If we are that energy conscious surely the price of petrol would be high and diesel low to encourage diesel usage throughout - or is the environment not as important as bringing in big tax revenue, call me skeptical hey!

For car insurance, you MUST move every year. Forget the renewal price, you will always get ripped off if you stay with the same company.

Why encourage diesel use? Its far worse for the environment (although it does output lower CO2). Diesel (a by-product of petrol) is terrible for the air quality (particles and gasses) and it deserves to be far more expensive than petrol, which is far superior in terms of engine emmisions (CO2 aside).

 

£260 tax for me this year, £320 insurance, FC, NCB protected. Down £300 for shopping around.

Why encourage diesel use? CO2 aside, its far worse for the environment, especially in a city. Diesel (a by-product of petrol) is terrible for the air quality, petrol is far superior.

Because taxation is ridiculously based on carbon dioxide output and not carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and exhaust particle output.

Which is why it's a load of 4rse. The taxation is not even based on usage. Let me give you a particular* example. I own a little diesel van which I only use occasionally, as I cycle to work every day. How can this tax be based on my van's emissions when I hardly use it?

So by lowering the tax on diesels, don't you think that kind of encourages people to buy diesels?? Therefore, increasing demand for Diesel and so usage?

 

To put it another way look at which cars are holding their money currently and it is mainly diesels due to the current high demand for them. Trust me I am in the process of looking.......mainly at Honda Civics at the minute, the honda 2.2 cdti type s gt is a blooming nightmare to get hold of. And why am I looking at it.....because the tax is cheaper!

 

£260 a year for tax, are you driving a 2.5/3 litre petrol job then?

 

I just don't think that it is working by keeping the Diesel tax so cheap as if more and more drivers move over to Diesel, have we achieved anything?
