Will it come with Vista SP1, will it come 1 week into term, or the last week of the holidays like SP2 for XP did and then bork a few machines just in time for the start of term
mattx Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Oh my gawd....... And there was me thinking SP2 would be the last.... Still NT4 had 6 Service Packs if memory serves me correctly. Remember having to re-apply it even if you installed a printer driver ? :-)

Add a firewall that is actually any good (protecting stuff getting in is all well and good, but what about all the malware that silently installs and then spends its time dialing home?), take 3 hours to install if your machine isn't the latest and greatest? I'm guessing it will include IE7 as a standard package - which will be annoying, as I have put off installing it due to it being a completely different interface (which will upset the staff). I see hours of fun heading our way!

Espada Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 It will just be a patch update. Maybe a bit of DRM thrown in for good measure. They won't want to improve the user experience in XP as it would lessen the incentive to upgrade.

XP SP2 was a bit of a freak in that regard, it was the first MS service pack that I can remember that added major changes. All of the others were just bugfixes.

IE7 is being waved around as being more secure and you have to deselect it via windows update as well... I just think they are going to go the whole hog and make it the supported browser.

Service Pack 7 got to beta stage, and there was a screenshot from a nasa control station that was running it, but MS pulled the plug on it before it was finished.

Its simple and quick, and I have created my own custom install disc that cuts down 50% of the work when setting up a one off PC.

Although still haven't found a way to get the .NET updates into the slipstream
