Nope its fine to mention the site. Spiceworks is a help desk/inventory web application. It can either be paid for, or advert supported. Completely legit.

There are lots of alternatives to it as well...

I have used spiceworks in the past - a touch annoying having the ads everywhere but there are better products out there for simple helpdesk type thing.

We use Spiceworks here. Great tool in terms of ease of install, and ease of use.

It is heavy on resources though, so ideally needs a dedicated box or a VM which you can control resource assignment too (it seems to use whatever it can grab for network scans) (this may just be down to the size of the network we have though).

I've used GLPI and RT before too - GLPI was good in conjunction with OCS-NG, but a little limiting (at the time, not used it in 4 years). RT is hugely customisable, but complex to do so, and it doesn't have an asset/inventory module.

Have used Spiceworks for years, its awesome and keeps getting better.

I started off using purely for the inventory, then added the helpdesk and things kinda snowballed from there.

The great thing is that is pulls together a lot of my tasks, so its my inventory, helpdesk, IT portal (with my guides and important IT info), licence compliance tracker, network monitor (reporting on out of date AV, low free space, low toner etc), warranty tracker (it automatically pulls in warranty info on HP and Dell equipment it finds) and probably some other stuff I have l forgotten.

Works fine with all my HPs and they are non-HP installed OS's, you need to ensure that your BIOS is setup right which most machines are but if they are flashed it can loose data. Spiceworks website has guides to help sort it out :)

my personal opinion is it tries to do too much they would be better focusing on fewer areas

+1

I cant have it running all the time, just hogs too many resources.

We use Spiceworks at all our sites and works out really well, its a bit bloated in areas but the helpdesk area is perfect.

OK finally got round to installing spiceworks. We have a few old pc's laying about so set one up and just installed spiceworks on it. Didnt want to slow down the server.

Done an networks scan and its only picking up 12 desktops :( we have more than that any ideas what i am doing wrong?

Spiceworks is great - I've got an ancient fujitsu e8020 running it. It copes - and uses very little power.

I wish they'd do a linux port so it doesn't need a windows licence. Could put it in a VM then - couldn't get it to work under 2008 server.

Have you got the IP ranges set up right in the scan settings?

I found it tended to pick up more devices over time, make sure the ip ranges are correct and include all you vlans if you have them and leave it a few days.

Although we tend to just use helpdesk and email alert functions.
