MattDLEA Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Appologies if I'm not allowed to mention this site (Mods please delete if that is the case) But are any of you using spiceworks? I have had a look at it and am confused to what it is and what it can do? is it ligit? Also when i have been googling for advice it has took me to the spiceworks site but i cant see the answers unless im logged in? Thanks for any advice
TheScarfedOne Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Nope its fine to mention the site. Spiceworks is a help desk/inventory web application. It can either be paid for, or advert supported. Completely legit. There are lots of alternatives to it as well...
MatthewL Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Lot of people recommend Spiceworks, its a good little all in one package I think and its not bad for been free.
sted Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 my personal opinion is it tries to do too much they would be better focusing on fewer areas
glennda Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 I have used spiceworks in the past - a touch annoying having the ads everywhere but there are better products out there for simple helpdesk type thing.
swiftysw1 Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 I have used spiceworks in the past - a touch annoying having the ads everywhere but there are better products out there for simple helpdesk type thing. Free ones?? What??
glennda Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Free ones?? What?? Well personally I use request tracker but take a search of the forum and there is lots of threads about it 1
DeltaBravo Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I use Spiceworks and it's a great helpdesk and I highly recommend it. Lots of features in it, not bad for free!
localzuk Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 We use Spiceworks here. Great tool in terms of ease of install, and ease of use. It is heavy on resources though, so ideally needs a dedicated box or a VM which you can control resource assignment too (it seems to use whatever it can grab for network scans) (this may just be down to the size of the network we have though). I've used GLPI and RT before too - GLPI was good in conjunction with OCS-NG, but a little limiting (at the time, not used it in 4 years). RT is hugely customisable, but complex to do so, and it doesn't have an asset/inventory module.
sparkeh Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Have used Spiceworks for years, its awesome and keeps getting better. I started off using purely for the inventory, then added the helpdesk and things kinda snowballed from there. The great thing is that is pulls together a lot of my tasks, so its my inventory, helpdesk, IT portal (with my guides and important IT info), licence compliance tracker, network monitor (reporting on out of date AV, low free space, low toner etc), warranty tracker (it automatically pulls in warranty info on HP and Dell equipment it finds) and probably some other stuff I have l forgotten.
Guest TheLibrarian Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 +1 for Spiceworks I agree with @sparkeh says.

john Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 only does the warranty iirc if you use hps own installs do your own and it cant get the data Works fine with all my HPs and they are non-HP installed OS's, you need to ensure that your BIOS is setup right which most machines are but if they are flashed it can loose data. Spiceworks website has guides to help sort it out
PICNIC Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 my personal opinion is it tries to do too much they would be better focusing on fewer areas +1 I cant have it running all the time, just hogs too many resources.
IanT Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 We use Spiceworks at all our sites and works out really well, its a bit bloated in areas but the helpdesk area is perfect.
MattDLEA Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 OK finally got round to installing spiceworks. We have a few old pc's laying about so set one up and just installed spiceworks on it. Didnt want to slow down the server. Done an networks scan and its only picking up 12 desktops we have more than that any ideas what i am doing wrong?
mats Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Spiceworks is great - I've got an ancient fujitsu e8020 running it. It copes - and uses very little power. I wish they'd do a linux port so it doesn't need a windows licence. Could put it in a VM then - couldn't get it to work under 2008 server.
CHR1S Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 +1 for spiceworks Its a bit bloated and I find it slow to use, but its free.

Have you got the IP ranges set up right in the scan settings?
LiamH Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I found it tended to pick up more devices over time, make sure the ip ranges are correct and include all you vlans if you have them and leave it a few days. Although we tend to just use helpdesk and email alert functions.
gibbo_ap Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 after faffing for ages i finally got it working, but had to give it its own user! its not bad, but i have no need to use it really
hardtailstar Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Anyone know how to change the remote control feature so it does not log the users out and just remotes into the computer as it is?
