Hello!

Can anyone help with this issue please? For some reason I have multiple 'My Documents' folders on the network 'user' share. They should say the names of the users but instead they are displayed as 'My Documents' and it's impossible to find any folders and who they belong to! Some folders show the user name...others don't...It only displays them like this when accessing from a Windows 7 machine.

Screenshot attached.

Its a bug with Windows 7 - there is multiple threads about it. There are a couple of botch fixes and a normal one.

botch fix is search desktop.ini and delete them all or i'll find out how to do the normal fix

We would have the same situation as you but we have carried over the user settings we had from our old Viglen network.

To explain we have:

\\Server\\Year of intake share\Username\Cached

The 'Cached' folder is the users' home share.

For example for Year 7:

\\Server\\YOI2011\11SmithJ\Cached

It's not really a bug it's due to the fact that the recommended folder structure is not to have the users my documents directed at the root of their folder.

What's the best way?

Unfortunately there's no method I could find to deploy this tweak via GPO, but it takes seconds for users to enable it.

Using scripts can have negative logon speed issues as FN-GM mentioned some time ago.

I'm in the mind that I want the documents to redirect to the users folder root share. They can then Create subject folders in the root of their home drive which reduces the file path length and I consider a more tidier professional look that would translate to different non-microsoft networks, and also means they can quickly access their files from My Computer > N: (or whatever) so for me this is a bug, allthough one I can deal with by simply adding the Owner Column to the Explorer window when searching for users folders.

I just added the one line to the logon batch file.

%windir%\system32\icacls.exe %homedrive%\Desktop.ini /deny "All-Staff":r

I set it to deny read permission to all staff, so any staff that browse to the directory see the proper filename. You can change that to be domain admins or whomever you want. I have found no downfalls.
