I was telling my sister, who lives in Geneva, how cold it had been recently. She told me how the temparature over there had fallen to -23degC. Here are some pictures of cars parked by the lake after the wind had whipped up the water over the wall.

This pic is always flying round the 'net aswell and always attributed to america, i KNEW it was lake geneva, i'd recognise those trees anywhere

here is Russia we have -29 today. Some people say its unusual, but I believe it is normal temperature for our region (Volga area), so nothing special. Of course its very unpleasant, freezing cold and children dont go to school hehe

Always makes me laugh when we complain about the weather in the UK, then we sit back and watch shows like Ice Road truckers where they talk about -40 temperatures etc...

 

Sure, its been cold for us in the UK, but it is nothing really compared to other countries.

Yes, its out of the ordinary, but it doesn't really have a huge effect on the country... What difference does it make to the country if we hit -4 or -10? Not much really.

See, this is my point. The amount of snow we've had this year isn't out of the ordinary. It is in fact quite low. We've had a sprinkling in the south west, and a sprinkling in London, the only places that got it heavily are the usual spots where they get it every year.

 

Yet, Heathrow cancelled flights, and the media made out that the apocalypse had arrived...

But we don't get it for weeks and months on end.

 

If the goverment/councils spent millions on infrastructure to cope with 2-3 days of snow a year the taxpayers would have something to say about it.

Hmm I wonder if those cars would still be drivable? Surely that amount of ice and water when melting must cause some havoc with some cars?

Well, whist it wasn't all that cold at home on Saturday, we did have a cracking frost ....

 

 

I wish now that I'd gone back out with a proper camera rather than just using my iphone.

they will In Russia some people leave cars nearby their houses for whole winter. Some of them dont use cars during the winter and dont want to pay for car parks, some of them cant get out their cars after great snowfalls, give up and leave cars under the snow. There are a lot of reasons. In spring snow melts and set the cars free and drivers start using them again. Of course leaving cars outside for the whole long winter is damaging for carriers, but some people just dont care p.s. i am not one of them, I leave my baby in teh garage

Got this from my sister on Friday, 9th March, which should answer your question,

"Well, they finally de frosted this week. The man who owned the one with the roof box on it was on the local news. He claimed that he had gone to attend a birthday party on February 3rd, and thought there were a lot of free parking places by the lake, so he parked there. More fool him, there are never any parking spaces by the lake. If you want to go for a coffee, you can end up parking 15 minutes away and walking down. Anyway, finally defrosted, the news filmed him getting into his car, placing his key in the ignition, turning his key, and...................................starting the thing first time. Must be like cryogenics for cars."

Those pictures are incredible...wonder what kind of damage it causes those unfortunate cars.
