DSapseid Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Is there a way to bulk resize photos to make them smaller? I have used irfanview before to make the longest side 1000pixels and that reduces the size massively! Is there a way that i can point at a users my pictures folder and just tell it to overwrite all the photos with the smaller one? they are in lots of sub folders, i know i can do it a folder at a time but thats a lot of effort!!
themightymrp Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 If you have a version of Photoshop anywhere you can do this. Just go to File --> Process Multiple Files. Follow the screen, pick source folder, destination folder, resize options, output format options, click go
kevbaz Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I use the MS image resizer tool, i like it as its just a right click - resize image, process. you can do a search of your users data drive for *.jpg then select all - resize. so select which ones you want to do. NikChillin Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 If you have MS Office you can use MS Picture manager in the tools menu. It is simply 'Select All' and then 'edit picture - resize'. I use it for the individual school pictures so I can add them to the database.

kevbaz Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Dont forget those pesky .bmp's they can be huge, but also bare in mind student maybe doing artwork and some of the image may need to stay a higher res

The user in question is the food tech teacher who has photo evidence of all the gcse kids work and the photos were 3000x4000 pixels at 3mb each!! reduced them to 1300x800ish (medium on the checkboxes!), they dont need to be that highres for putting a tiny picture on a publisher doc!

Batch mode / advanced options - bottom right corner "overwrite existing files". Subdirs - batch screen again, left side "include subfolders". Can't beat irfanview. +1 for reducing default image size on class cameras.
sonofsanta Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 If you have Irfanview just do it with that... you can rename, switch format, overwrite, whatever you need to do. Fast and free and easy to use. Open it up and press B to get the batch window (it's on the menus somewhere as well, I can only remember the shortcut though)

Bjoern Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Another method is to use Dropbox + dropboxautomator.wappwolf.com - you can define folders in your dropbox where dropboxautomator will scale, rotate all pictures etc. in a way you define it. Works really fine over here plus you can upload the pictures to everywhere (facebook etc.) if you want to.

How does it work when you are using software installed on a workstation to resize on the server? Does it pull the photo and then copy it back? Or do you install on the server? Or do you install on the server? It reads the image and resizes on the fly. It locks Explorer for a few minutes but never had a problem with doing 10's of thousands of images sometimes. You can also install the resizer on the server if you want. All our servers are SSD based now so resizing takes seconds.
