wifi to smoothwall box

Hi We are planning our wifi install. The idea we were thinking is....

 

wifi on its own vlan then someway connected to our smoothwall.

 

Please could somebody tell me how we would connect the wifi to the smoothwall box asking students for password?

Is your smoothwall running on commodity hardware or one of their appliances?

 

If you have more than one interface available and are running G3 then you can make that interface part of your vlan for your wireless and have an authentication method on that to suit.

Put Wifi on a separate DHCP scope (using superscope), use the smoothwall as your default gateway for the wireless net, et voila!

If you can let us have some more details about your particular smoothwall, then I'm only happy to help.

We have our Guest Wi-Fi WLAN (Ruckus) configured on it's on own VLAN; with an Interface (VLAN) configured on the SmoothWall (this would then be the Default Gateway).

Instead of using a DHCP IP Helper to the internal DHCP servers etc, we use SmoothWall to manage its own DHCP (Scope) and DNS Services etc. So it is all self contained.

 

You can then setup routing (Zone Bridging) on the SmoothWall box, if you want any of the Wi-Fi clients to access anything internally (like VLE, Email), and then setup a transparent proxy (Create a location based on VLAN/IP Address range within SmoothWall) using SSL Authentication (seems to be the most compatible option for the various mobile devices out there!)

I am currently in the process of trying to setup exactly what you have got setup using Ruckus and Smoothwall... do you have any kind of step by step idiots guide on how I do it?

 

I have 2 NICs, one on a 172.16.x.x range (Main School Network) and another on 10.0.0.x range, which is what I've setup for Guest WiFi... I've setup a DHCP server on the Smoothwall box to dish out IP's on the Guest WiFi interface and this seems to be working...

 

Our internet feed is via LEA which is on a 172.16 address... how do I setup the zone bridge so a wifi user can get a 10.0.0.x address, authenticate to the Smoothwall with their Active Directory logins (on 172. side) and still get internet access?

 

I'm probably missing something very obvious but can't be sure!

It does and works very well for us Our main interface is primarily for the academic network but is also tagged for the Student Wifi VLAN and works a treat
