I've seen 25cm or 30cm, we've bought them ourselves, but never that short. The part numbers for those were 99TRT-600-H (99TRT-600-HK for Black, 99TRT-600-HB for Blue) from Cables Direct or A3L791B25CM from Belkin.

That's basically what I've found. We can get custom ones that are 15cm etc but you end up paying a lot for them

From what I can recall of my college days...

It's all to do with transmission characterisitcs of the cable. You can only test and certify cables over a certain length as anything under a certain length wont express the same characteristics. It's not to say that short cables don't work (we've all made them in the past), it's just that they have to be over a certain length to guarantee Cat5e properties.

ps. apologies if my memory has failed - it's been 12 years!

This is correct and switches expect a certain amount of resistance in a cable, if the cable is too short then you can overload the port in the switch. Hence why you tend not to get cables shorter than 0.25 or 0.5M.

The ones ive seen for anything like a reasonable price are 0.3m. I either got them from Insight or RM in a various range of colours.
